So I decided to read Watchmen again after the chat. I had a couple questions about the first issue... I don't remember Moore going much real history... does he? The cops refer to 'Vice-President Ford' in the book set in 1985, so did Ford never become President? I remember DKR doing something like that (wasn't either Nixon or Reagan like a dictator for life there?) Or am I getting stuff confused? I do think its funny the Rorschach acts far more like todays Batman than the Batman analogue does. It's been a while since I've read it, but I think it goes something like in the Watchmen reality, Dr. Manhattan single handedly defeated the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong, Watergate didnt happen because the Comedian(?)...did something...and Nixon was able to ride a wave of popularity to change laws that made him President for life DKR had a very similar premise... Regan had Superman to pull the USSR and other threats into line, and made the US undefeatable, he was able to change the election laws, and continued for several more terms.

Just finished Aquaman 80 Years HC. Liked the sampling of stories from the different eras. I would love to read some more 40's stories!

Read the Hulk Magazine issues (#11-#15,#17-#18 & #20) of my Moon Knight Epic Collection. This is really where the character starts to shine for me. Moench really gives these back-ups some pulp noir flair and Sienkiewicz's art is just lovely Those are favourites of mine too, though I don't find the MK series with the same creative team quite as good as these Hulk mag back-ups.

Yeah, I've just finished Marvel Preview #21 and Moon Knight #1 and it's just not even a fair comparison between the Magazine version and the neutered feeling regular comic book. Moench does try his hand at very dark subject matter in the comic, but he was able to get away with so much more in the Magazine
I also read the first issue of Marvel's 70's adaptation of John Carter. Thought it was pretty neat, wish there was more sci-fi swashbuckling out there. Killraven's exploits in Amazing Adventures does come fairly close though (was actually kind of wondering if the Barsoom series is what influenced Marvel's take on War Of The Worlds more so than H.G. Wells)

Reading thru Superboy 75 Years. I really want to read more 40's stories from DC. My only complaint is I would have left out the Superboy Prime stories and focused more on Clark and Kon-El.

I think that was part of it. And, perhaps Moench, in trying to make the character more relatable, also made him a bit more of a conventional crime-fighter -not entirely so, but more in that direction than he'd been previously. Another problem was that Sienkiewicz's art didn't look as good to me on the series, possibly because he had trouble keeping to a monthly or bi-monthly schedule. The last few issues, where he became a little more experimental with the art, were great from that perspective, though. I have a feeling I might like the series more the next time I read it because my expectations won't be disappointed, as they were just a little the first time.
I liked Marvel's John Carter series but the art was never consistent enough for me to really love it the way I did the ERB books they were based on.

I've never read the original books or Dune for that matter (and I call myself a fan of science fiction?). I did like Disney's John Carter film from a few years ago, thought it was fun for what it was, though I struggle to think how well they thought it would do in a post-Star Wars world
I also have heard from relatives that I'm a distant relation to Edgar Rice Burroughs? Though whether that's actual fact is up for debate. I've also heard that I was related to a prince turned pirate and that we have some piece of his treasure tucked away in a safety deposit box

By the way, when I was reading Batman #267 (September 1975 cover date) I saw the house ad below for a King Arthur comic. Anyone know if this ever happened? I've been unable to find such a comic.

I read Batman #268, another rate Batman 70's title that I actually own. A nice little Denny O'Neil mystery with a couple of red herrings, and art by the underrated Irv Norvick and inks by Tex Blaisdell. Robin makes a rare 70's appearance here, even though he didn't make it on the cover for some reason.

I've often wondered why there's such a paucity of King Arthur related comics.

I've often wondered why there's such a paucity of King Arthur related comics. I think Conway had a lot of other titles on his plate and it probably got lost in the shuffle? But then why would have they have run the ad for it?
A king Arthur book would have been cool though
