Anyone else pick up issue #1 last week? I just read it now, and I really don't feel like the first issue did much for me. I like Faith's characterization, but there really isn't much of a premise at work yet. She has a day job and wants to fight crime, etc etc. My problem with the new Valiant all along has been that the writing and characterization are always solid, but little happens to really draw me in and make me want to keep reading. I'm going to give Faith another issue or two to do its work, but I foresee dropping this title in my near future. Hopefully, they'll change my mind next issue.

The contrasting internet reaction to this book is hilarious. Some think that it's intentionally promoting obesity, while others cite it as another rung in the battle for "female empowerment" in the geek culture community
Can't makes sense of whether or not this is good or bad publicity for Valiant though

Gaining super powers doesn't give you a six pack. It's more the buzz around the series that might be celebrating obesity just a tad too much. We don't want to malign anyone for their appearance, but we don't want to celebrate poor life choices either. I'm overweight by a lot, and I'm not comfortable with that. I shouldn't be comfortable with that as it puts me at risk for a number of health issues that can impact my family as well as myself, but folks shouldn't mistreat me, judge me, or fail to represent me in fiction because of it either. Then, of course, there are folks with medical conditions who cannot help their weight, and that's a whole other issue.

I'm one of "those" types that prefers the company of larger women, but that doesn't mean that I don't worry about their well being. I kind of get upset when the majority of overweight people try and justify their obesity, citing it as being the end result of bad genes or a medical disease, because it sort of takes away from the seriousness of the issue and those who really are suffering from the latter Then there's the whole "fat shaming"/"thin privilege" debacle that started on tumblr....

Just read issue #2. Really strong character writing with very little obligatory action. I really respect a comic that takes time to develop characterization and inner conflict.
I'm into this now and psyched for the next issue.

Based on the success of the mini, this series will now be an on-going.

Hadn't thought of that.
There's supposed to be a Harbinger film, and if so, she'll be there.

I'm really behind on this series and need to catch up. I see we're already up to Volume 2 #1 as of today -- what happened to volume 1?

I think Volume 1 was the 4 issue mini.

I think Volume 1 was the 4 issue mini. Interesting that they chose to keep it as a mini. I didn't get a sense from the first two issues that there was a specific limited plotline in play. I guess Valiant just really wanted another #1 collector's item to put out there.

I think you're right. The mini did really well and they launched off of that, you know, like companies used to do
