Published: March thru July 1993 Synopsis: Strange magic allows Usagi and Gen to work side by side with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Notes: This is the only in-continuity meeting of Usagi and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, though, within the story, Leonardo acknowledges having met Usagi on previous occasions that are no longer considered in-continuity ("The Crossing" from vol. 1 #10, and "Turtle Soup and Rabbit Stew" from Turtle Soup #1) Issue #1 was published concurrently with the final issue of Usagi Yojimbo volume 1 Discuss the issue and/or post full reviews below!

In my view Usagi meeting the turtles is 100% in continuity. I mean come on, they're just so much fun and they don't really contradict anything else.

I don't have the issues any longer but what was problematic about them? "The Crossing" was written by Peter Laird, had Usagi and Leonardo occupying the same world without explanation, and depicted Usagi as an arrogant bully who needed to learn a lesson from a far wiser Leonardo (which really bugged me). I recall "Turtle Soup and Rabbit Stew" less well, but I'm pretty sure it had Usagi and Space Usagi meet. That one might also have been written by Laird(?).

Read this last night before bed from the Usagi Yojimba Saga. Nice touch that a blind rat ninja master Kakera-sensei summons the turtles. The Turtles were rather blandly portrayed for the most part except for Leonardo showing his strength of determination and skills as he boldly fights on even after enduring deep wounds. The Turtles just accept their coming to Usagi's world and their curiosity and desire to explore this new world quickly drops aside once the fighting begins.
Lots of humorous moments and interactions throughout to lighten the story. Gen's being upset when the Turtles ask about tails and Gen remarking that at least they wear clothing provide me a smile and laugh. I liked that Chizu steals the kiss from Usagi while complementing his skills and later Usagi remarks to Gen that she may be even more trouble than her brother. Also the Turtles pondering they why's of Usagi's world as to why which animals are humanized and others are not shows Stan has either been asked these same questions or thought long and hard himself as to what works and why.
That these warriors all quickly accept one another without the traditional fights among themselves shows us Stan Sakai knowing his world and characters are beyond such petty tussling unless it is necessary for the story. He allows the verbal sparring between characters but doesn't feel the need to having them show their courage or skills until it is truly necessary in battling the ninja clan. Battle creates bonds immediately among those involved and it was nice also having Chizu remembering and honoring her brother fighting beside Usagi and honoring the memory of that battle.
It is the depths of Sakai's writing and quiet storytelling skills that has me falling in love with this world again after so many years away.

At a certain point, I'd imagine you just learn to roll with it. It's also an inversion of what happened to Usagi when they first met in the animated series.

I did not realize until now that the new TMNT/Usagi crossover is happening at the same time that this first full crossover of theirs turns 30 years old!
