Stray dog is a fun character, we don't get a lot to off on him here but I like how gentlemanly he was about telling Gen to buzz off

Yeah, he doesn't have the greatest start but he gets developed into a fun character latter on to the point that he's one of my favorite supporting characters.

Stray Dog is a bit of a contradiction in this story to me. So caring about providing for the orphanage he is willing to "steal" from and "force" fellow warriors he worked beside and pledged to assist. Perhaps that is what Stan meant for the character in showing this to us that everyone has many aspects of themselves? I liked the idea of Stray Dog and his character so it may be that i will grow fonder of him as more is revealed in later stories.
I liked how Usagi turned what he said upside down on Gen about how he didn't care for any reward for Fuji but demanded the rewards of everyone else be split in thirds so the girl who lead them to Fuji also had a share for her actions. Gen should have seen that coming but i think that he likes Usagi and has become a true friend and the panel with Stray Dog covered in orphan's stating in this world we've all got to look out for one another emphasizes this idea. Also Stray Dog makes a fun foil infuriating Gen by cheating Gen from his portion of the reward.

I'm willing to bet there's source material for this; a classic film I haven't seen, most likely. usagigoya would know.

If haven't seen or read enough Samurai stuff to know if it is a traditional trope or not. So that would make a bit of sense/irony if that is true.
