Published: December 1996 Synopsis: "Usagi, while crossing a snow-covered mountain pass, comes across a little girl and her severely wounded father, the only survivors of a party attacked by bandits. It's rabbit against nature as the ronin attempts to usher them safely through the pass, in a snowstorm, stalked by predatory animals, with the threat of an avalanche literally above their heads!" Notes: Usagi Yojimbo (v.3) #49 "Three Seasons" contains a flashback that occurs soon after this story. A "Lord Araki," seemingly unrelated to "Merchant Araki," will be introduced in "The Patience of The Spider" only a few issues from now. Discuss the issue and/or post full reviews below!

I've always liked the way Stan slides in these types of supernatural stories to break things up every once in a while and this one was amazingly touching. The merchant's half spoken question to Usagi tipped the reveal a little early but these types of recently dead guide stories are fun whether you see them coming or not.

I read this with my seven year old while waiting for my four year old's dance class to end the other week, and I started sobbing in front of all the other parents when we got to the close. Gets me every time.

Wow, what a story of love and devotion between a parent and a child and the strength of keeping a promise. Once Usagi committed himself to the promise and had to confront the mounting odds time and again with the little girl coming out unscathed and encouraging and pushing him onward I then saw the ending coming where she the spirit in death was protecting her father whereas the normal is the other way around of the parent struggling to protect the child in life. This is a story which should be read by parents and children.
