Dracula is one of my favorite novels, and I love the comparisons to it here; from the way they are met at the road and offered hospitality, to their vampiric host not joining them at dinner to Tomoe remarking that it was odd that such a large compound should have no servants it's all in all a fun homage.
One thing that struck me though was that it was stated that the Samurai's wife had a cat and that after drinking it's slain mistress's blood it returned as a demon to exact revenge. We haven't seen any domesticated pets that were else where people since the early issues so this appearance so much latter seemed odd. I suppose it was kept to preserve an actual folktale but I haven't researched that to see if it was true.

On a side note here, have you read Kim Newman's Anno Dracula? I picked it up after reading Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland, and I really enjoyed the first one. I'm reading the second one now, and I have several other Kim Newman books in my "to-read" pile. I love how the Anno Dracula series is packed with neat references to characters from all over literature. |

Very nice horror story utilizing Japanese myths. Really funny with Usagi running away scared and screaming at the end and the 2 villagers joking about samurai...
