Back then, I was a Flash fan but definitely took notice of whoever was writing these great stories. I followed his name and picked up the back issues I missed and later followed and loved Green Lantern and especially JSA. That particular issue of Wonder Woman really struck me and I followed the entire Rucka run and loved it. Not a completeist, but, his is the run I've read and enjoyed the most. Will be getting his current run as well. I'm familiar with Johns' GL work, but not his JSA work. Is it true that Rucka's WW did not have a final ending to the run as it was suddenly cut short because of the Infinite Crisis reboot?

You know I don't remember right off, but I think that's true. Seems like there should have been more story there after she killed Maxwell Lord.
That's a good story.

You know I don't remember right off, but I think that's true. Seems like there should have been more story there after she killed Maxwell Lord. That's a good story. That was indeed a good story. Also, I remember she went on trial for that. But not in her own title. It was in the Manhunter series, and her defense lawyer was Kate Spencer. Oh man, I loved that Manhunter series by Andreyko. Kate's Manhunter grew on me, and she was a member of BoP later in that series, but post Gail Simone though in the first volume.

Yeah, I liked Andreyko's Manhunter too. That was a really fantastic series. It received a cult following that readers refused to let the series get cancelled. I think it was cancelled twice and saved twice thanks to loyal fans.

You're correct. I was one of those fans keeping it alive There were a lot of us keeping that particular series alive. It was Manhunter and the Spider-Girl series that just kept getting revived from after repetitive cancellations. They just had a cult like following and their fan base at the time helped those two titles last longer than they should've.

Manhunter v3 #12.50 USD/3.85 CAN @ October 2004 "Shedding Skin" Writer: Marc Andreyko Penciller: Jesus Saiz Inker: Jimmy Palmiotti Letterer: Jared K. Fletcher Colorist: Steve Buccellato Editor: Harvey Richards & Joan Hilty Synopsis: Teams of Los Angeles law enforcement officials responded to a crime scene of an overturned money truck in the highway. They were astonished to find a hole punctured on the inside of the truck with blood splattered all over the surrounding hole. We then join prosecutor, Kate Spencer in a Los Angeles federal courthouse, prosecuting a secured super-villian, Copperhead, in a serial killing criminal case. The court took a recess and we join Kate along with the the assistant D.A. in one of the adjoining rooms as she smoked discussing the case. The court officer suddenly popped open the door and surprising them that the jury has came back with a quick verdict. Everyone is back at the courtroom, and the jury foreman read the verdict... "Not Guilty." As everyone cleared the courtroom, Kate Spencer had words with the defense councilor telling him, to keep buying into his bullshit of saving lives. They exit, and Kate meets the media outside. She advised them that it is just a matter of time before Copperhead escaped and killed again, in which Copperhead shot her a dangerous and intimidating look. In another side of Los Angeles we see police armed escort in a money truck-like vehicle escorting Copperhead. The supercriminal punched a hole to the front where the men were, and we see the money-trucklike vehicle crash. So that was the back story. We join Kate Spencer going into the police evidence room. She goes through many criminal weapons, and settles for a metallic staff. As Copperhead terrorizes the street, we are joined by a shadowy figure. And she shows herself and confronts Copperhead in a side street. In the ensuing melee she is wounded as Copperhead's claw tears through her shoulder. He threw a manhole cover at her and escaped underneath in the sewers. She had the metallic staff barely block the manhole cover thrown at her. She followed the criminal underground and was attacked from behind, overpowering her. As criminals in comic books tend to do, they talk too much. And she grabbed his tongue and electricity zapped from the other end of her hand holding the metallic staff, to the criminal's tongue. Cops and detectives are then seen going underneath the sewers responding to a disturbance call. They are surprised to see a dead Copperhead leaning against the wall with a hole in his head, and inscribed in the villain's blood on the wall, the name, "Manhunter." Comments: This is a very interesting first issue. It showcased that justice isn't served the halls of the courtroom, and that criminals get away because of loopholes. We see a protagonist who is human with its vices and traits (she smoked a cigarette in the adjoining courtroom awaiting the verdict), stole a law enforcement's ID badge to get access to the police evidence room to steel a weapon. And she doesn't get to be overpowering, but at the same time was smarter in her fight with the criminal. Of course, superheroes aren't supposed to kill, and she kills her first opponent in the first issue.

Manhunter v3 #22.50 USD/3.85 CAN @ November 2004 "Parenthood" Writer: Marc Andreyko Penciller: Jesus Saiz Inker: Jimmy Palmiotti Letterer: Phil Balsman Colorist: Steve Buccellato Editor: Harvey Richards & Joan Hilty Synopsis: Manhunter crashes into a group of Batman's Rogues Gallery who're committing violent acts among their victims. She killed the Joker first, and then shoots Two-Face and Killer Croc. She makes her way at the end of the room and opened a curtain which revealed a captured Batman. As she went to help him, Batman slapped her asking her what the hell is she doing taking a life. She responded that she's the good guy, and he put her down claiming that she shouldn't pretend to play hero. Then Kate wakes up in her bed. Apparently she had a nightmare following her deadly encounter with the villain, Copperhead, the previous night. She got up from the bed with a sore body, but the first thing she does is try to light a cigarette, but cannot find a lighter. She settled for turning on the gas stove and finally lit her cigarette. She looked in a mirror while talking on the phone and saw bruises all over that required stitches. As she tries to get her morning going, she recalled her battle with Copperhead the previous issue, and at the same time thinking about other superheroes and how they put on their costumes, and where do they stash it afterwards. Over in St. Roch, Louisiana a man at a resort appeared to be talking to himself. Then a newsflash popped up on the corner tv screen and the news advised that the criminal, Copperhead was murdered the night before, and was claimed by a group called the Manhunter(s). The man at the table was angered yelling that the murdered criminal was his friend, and told himself he had to go to a side-trip in Los Angeles. He then vanished into a black mist in his table, scaring the waitress. Meanwhile, Kate is at the courthouse, and after walking away from the media, settled in her office, and went through emotions about how she felt, but mostly felt exhilaration. She thinks about who's next on her list of criminals to go after. Then her young son, Ramsey, arrived surprising her, accompanied by her pissed off ex-husband, Peter, citing that she forgot it's her turn to to be with their son for this weekend. She told her son to grab some paper and wait as she and her ex-husband entered an adjoing office to argue as divorced couples tend to do. They were yelling at each other thinking their son cannot hear them, unfortunately, they are wrong as is the usual case with divorced couples. And they enter back to Kate's office where their son is, and both ex-husband and ex-wife are all smiles as if nothing happened, and a smiling dad tells his son that he'll pick him up at the end of the weekend. The son just nonchalantly waves goodbye to his dad. As his dad left Kate's office, Ramsey was going through her mom's files of pictures containing mutilated dead people and asked his mom who they were. As a protective mom, Kate immediately snatched them from her son citing he shouldn't be looking at such things, in which the young boy just said the pictures of the dead people were cool. She told her son they're going to restaurant and he can have a milk shake to get his mind off things, in which case the kid yelled out in excitement. At the restaurant, they have idle chit chat. But it came across as Kate not knowing what to talk about with her son other than asking about school and the new dog. Her son excused to go to the bathroom. And immediately, Kate whips out a cigarette, but before she can light up, a waitress told her she smoking in the restaurant was illegal for the last five years. She didn't light up. In the L.A. County coroner's office, we find a coroner with a high-tech holding case. A man materialized behind him and knocked him unconscious. He proceeded to open the case to see if it is indeed his deceased friend, Copperhead. He was angered some more as he saw the violent mutilation his deceased friend was in. He took a fang as a remembrance, and vowed that he, The Shadow Thief will get some payback to whoever did this to his friend. And he disappeared like a mist. After a clumsy waiter, whom she thought she recognized, spilled milkshake at her dress in the restaurant, Kate and Ramsey headed to her home. She went to her bedroom to change and start unwinding. Ramsey immediately went to the TV and DVD rack to find a movie. And just as any curious child, he opened a closet door in the living room, and the weaponized Manhunter staff/rod dropped to the floor. Wide-eyed with excitement at seeing something cool, he picked it up to take a good look at it. Meanwhile, Kate took a shower and after putting on her bathrobe and fluffing her hair dry with a towel headed to the living room to check on Ramsey. To her surprise he was holding and staring wide eyed at the weapon he was holding. He saw a button at the end and pushed it, and to Kate's horror she yelled "Don't!" As she darted to her son, and blinding explosion happened where her son stood. Comment: This is an entertaining cook book and at the same time has some social commentary about relationships and parenting. And it is intelligently done how a divorced parent should be very careful not to keep deadly weapons lying anywhere that is easily accessible by children. We get to see the protagonist as a superheroine/vigilante with negative traits like smoking, and a messed up personal relationship who is not in good terms with her husband. I like the build up to her next super-villain, who despite vowing to avenge his deceased friend, still had the decency to go back to his restaurant table in the resort, to pay his dinner bill. I like these little behaviors added here and there to make the characters not just a flat character. It makes for a more interesting read.

Action Comics #6661.00 USD/1.25 CAD @ June 1991 "Red Glass Picking Up the Pieces (part 3)" Writer: James Hudnall Penciler: Ed Hannigan Inker: Will Blyberg Colorist: Glen Whitmore Letterer: Bill Oakley Editors: Mike Carlin & Dan Thorsland Synopsis: There seven scenes in this issue. 1. As Martian Manhunter is in a state of comatose, Superman battles the Army and Air Force until they simultaneously launch and hit with close to a hundred missiles. 2. As the missile attacks had no effect on Superman, Captain Atom and Firestorm attack him with nuclear blasts, sending Superman underneath the molten remains of the earth. 3. Firestorm and Captain Atom’s attack was unsuccessful, as an angry Superman emerged from the molten earth and blasted them with his heat vision. 4. Superman is attacked by multiple other heroes, and he bellows out to leave him alone, and they all disintegrated, along with the army, and others. 5. Superman is suddenly in the moon and joined by a kryptonite wielding Wonder Woman who disappeared upon handing it to him, but all is not as it appeared as he is actually hallucinating and really holding a NASA machine in his hands. 6. He walked to a crated where there is a pink obelisk, is trying to communicate with him. 7. He dug out the obelisk, which turned out to be an alien, and flew away, and Superman’s sense are back to normal as he looked down towards the Earth. To sum it all up. An alien that is stuck in the moon is communicating to Superman to help it get unstuck in the moon, but does not communicate well in our language, and instead the communication comes across like nightmare scenarios. Finally, Superman snapped out of it and dug it out an allowed it to escape the moon and travel back in space. The End. Comments: This is why I only like to read Superman when he is in a story with Batman, or in a story with the JLA. In fact as long as there are other heroes involved in the story, those are the best Superman stories for the most part. If this story was a sophisticated animal, I would call it an invertebrate single celled animal. Yup.

Hitman #1"A Rage in Arkham" Part One 2.25 USD @ April 1996 Writer: Garth Ennis Penciler: John McCrea Inker: John McCrea Colorist: Carla Feeny Letterer: Willie Schubert Editor: Dan Raspler & Peter Tomasi Executive Editor: Mike Carlin Quotes: My name's Tommy Monaghan, and I kill people for money. It's a living. Synopsis: We join Tommy Monaghan gunning down criminals while he is sharing an internal monologue with the readers regarding his incomplete origin, powers, and his line of work. As he is killing these criminals, a superhero team responds to take him down, Shadow-Force. Tommy responds by gunning all of them down, and slaying all six members of Shadow-Force. It's Wednesday night, so Tommy goes to Noonan's Bar owned by Sean, to play poker with his other hitmen friends, Sean, Pat, Ringo, and Hacken. After all, Wednesday night is Poker Night at Noonan's Bar. Tommy doesn't use his powers of X-Ray vision and telepathy during the game, because even though he's a cold-blooded killer, he still has ethics during poker games with his friends. The friends talked about anything "under the sun" as no topics are left unturned. They finished the game, and as Sean and Tommy left, the other guys ask why Tommy keeps his sunglasses on even at night, and him as the only hitman taking on metahuman jobs, it is bound to bring its own kind of heat. Meanwhile in a hellish place, or perhaps Hell itself, a group called the Arkannone were discussing Tommy Monaghan, that he is exactly what they are looking for, a cold-blooded killer with no remorse. They just need to expunge any goodness that is left in him. Back outside of Noonan's Bar, Tommy and Sean were unloading "beer and groceries" from their cars, when Tommy bumped into a woman who will eventually be named Wendy. The box of bullets fell to the ground and she helped pick up the box and handed it over to him. He tells her his origin story and powers and job as an assassin, and read her mind and asked her out on a date to an Indian restaurant. And impressed and interested, Wendy agreed. Inside the Bar, Sean couldn't believe Tommy told her everything, and was jittery if she believed all that Tommy told her. Tommy told him not to worry, even though he didn't like Indian food, as it would eventually be worth it with her. And Tommy called someone named McWilliams who ordered a hit, and Tommy agreed as the fee was one million dollars. He's in a good mood as he started singing a Frank Sinatra song. The next day his good mood turned sour as he met with McWillams and found out the hit was on the supervillain named The Joker. It wasn't what Tommy was expecting, and he was thinking about rescinding his agreement, but was talked into by McWilliams, and will do the hit in Arkham. The money is his upon completion of the hit. Later that evening, in an abandoned alleyway, a shadowy figure is making a punching bag out of McWilliams asking him, to confirm who he gave the order to hit The Joker, and where is Tommy Monaghan exactly that night. In another area of Gotham City, Tommy just finished his date with Wendy that night and took her home to her apartment to her doorsteps. He didn't try his luck getting lucky with her, reading her mind says he won't get lucky anyway, and that he figured she's worth the wait. As he was leaving her place and singing in the hallways of the apartment because he's in a very good mood, his telepathy told him "batarang" and he quickly ducked avoiding getting hit with a batarang. In front of him is the figure of the Batman. And after saying a smart-allecky remark, he immediately darted for the stairways heading upstairs to the roof top. Confronted by Batman at the rooftop, Tommy asked him what did he want with him? And Batman responded all of the crimes Tommy has committed and now that he's planning to assassinate the Joker. Tommy is thinking he can't kill Batman as he may be a psycho but he's not one of the bad guys. Then he figured the Bat Symbol on Batman's chest is armored, and Tommy proceeded to shoot Batman at his Bat symbol repeatedly until Batman fell from the rooftop. Cops from a few blocks away saw a figure falling from the rooftop and proceeded to respond accordingly. Tommy then ran the stairs down to the ground floor to escape the apartment. Too late, he was met by Batman just outside the building, who decked him in the gut. And then received an uppercut from the Batman to knock him down. Tommy is pissed off, even though Batman is not a bad guy, he decided to shoot his kneecaps, but as he prepared, he suddenly raised his arms to surrender. The Batman is nowhere in sight. And right there with guns drawn aimed at him are several policemen. Comments: You have to love Garth Ennis's sense of humor while writing this story. I like the way Tommy is presented, especially his wit and sense of humor. Even in a battle with a scary guy like Batman he would still make wisecracks. The part in the beginning of the story where he was met by a group of non-mainstream superheroes and all of them suddenly being killed off was hilarious. It's good to see his supporting cast. It adds to the whole hitmen group thing. They interact as if they are regular people, shooting the breeze about anything. You can tell how close these friends are. At the same time, Ennis introduced a future girlfriend relationship for him, so at least Tommy's not just a loner guy with friends and killing people. That's what's so cool about Hitman, Tommy Monaghan. He's like a regular person like us, a blue collar man. Of course he's in the assassination industry, which is a growth industry anyway.

Hitman #2"A Rage in Arkham" Part Two 2.25 USD @ June 1996 Writer: Garth Ennis Penciler: John McCrea Inker: John McCrea Colorist: Carla Feeny & Heroic Age Letterer: Willie Schubert Editor: Dan Raspler & Peter Tomasi Executive Editor: Mike Carlin Quotes: Whackin' guys pays okay, but it ain't got much career prospects -- except for two in the back of the head some day you ain't lookin'... -Tommy Monaghan I need that million to move to New York get a place in Brooklyn, drink beer, eat pizza, watch the sun set over the skyline. It's somethin' to see, Pat. You see the sun go down in Gotham, it's like it's fallin' into hell, not there, through. Not there. - Tommy Monaghan Synopsis: The cops arresting Tommy placed him inside the squad car to take him to the precinct to be booked. Batman secretly got the attention in a dark alley telling her Tommy Monaghan has been hired to shoot The Joker, but if they incarcerate him, Batman will never know who ordered the hit on the Joker. Also, she shouldn't release this information to the press, which the detective agreed as long as Batman said "please," which he did. On the ride to the precinct, Tommy is thinking of a way to get out of this mess as he didn't want to spend years in the slammer again, so he concentrated and used his telepathy to see what dirt he can dig up on the two cops' minds. Looks like one is screwing the other's wife, an information Tommy blurted out to the cops and got into details. The offended cop pulled a gun and pointed it at his partner and order the squad car to be halted. Outside, the cop asked his partner the truth about him sleeping with his wife, which the other confessed to, and in return received a walloping right hand and got knocked out landing in the squad car's hand. Tommy blurted something, and the offended cop threatened to take his head off so Tommy kicked the car door slamming into the cop with the cop's head going through the passenger window as the door hit him. Tommy bolted and made a run for it with his hands cuffed behind him. The bloodied cop got up and started shooting at Tommy and pursuing him. Unseen by all, an Arkannone agent, Mawzir was nearby observing what happened and was impressed with why the Arkannone wanted Tommy to be their servant, but that he shouldn't be replaced by the hitman. After all Mawzir was the embodiment of several nazi psychotic war criminals, and looked like a demon with a red cape and a blood red swastika in his forehead. Goons snuck up behind Mawzir looking to mug him, and Mawzir turned around and from his dark as hell black/darkness inside the cape emerged many bullets, gunning down all of the goons killing them all. Later that evening, Tommy arrived at his friend's Pat's apartment door and was let it. As Pat got him some coffee, cigarettes, and wirecutters to get the handcuff off, Tommy told him his story. Pat couldn't believe he encountered even the Batman, of which Tommy said Bat's is one of the reasons he's leaving Gotham after hitting the Joker in Arkham. Pat couldn't believe Tommy is going through with it. One million dollars is how Tommy explained it. And they keep talking about their friends' lives and their lives. Then Pat read off the messages for Tommy from the serious to the hilarious unbelievable ones. Late in the middle of the night, at a distance from Arkham, Tommy Monaghan scouted everything with his X-Ray vision. He saw all the super tight security, law enforcement personnel, snipers, infrared trip-beams, rovers with guard dogs, and even the Batman lurking outside in the trees. A pair of cops shooting the breeze in a squad car outside was help up by a gun-toting Tommy Monaghan. He assumed the guise of one, and kept the other as a driver to have the police car enter Arkham's grounds. Upon gaining entry inside the grounds, he tied up both cops and placed them in the trunk and threw a stun grenade at them. Upon entry into the Arkham Asylum building he made his way to the violent ward area, and while there decided to get rid of some "loose changes" and silencer on his gun, gunned down several violent inmates. He didn't kill the Mad Hatter though, except told him the threat from an angry seller whom the Mad Hatter double-crossed. And upon encountering two guards, Tommy threw another stun grenade, which from afar outside the Batman found out as he was listening in on the security guards radio frequency. And as he reached the last row, the scary psychotic supervillains row... Two-Face... and at last, The Joker. Joker was just standing there facing Tommy Monaghan. And Tommy placed a slug in the middle of the Joker's forehead, which became a red dot in the Joker's forehead. The Joker didn't fall over, and the red dot in the forehead became a blood-red swastika. And the disguised Joker changed to his true form, Mawzir the Arkannone demon agent, and holding eight guns mentioned Tommy Monaghan by name, and blew him apart with repeated gunfire which shattered Tommy's gun and Tommy receiving multiple bullet wounds. Comments: Looks like with superpowers, Tommy is getting deeper and deeper into trouble with superpowered hits. It's good to know that even if they are hitman, they all have ideal dreams and goals to eventually leave the industry. The question is, what does it take to leave this whole world of violence? We are also introduced to some malevolent supernatural beings. It's something that transcends Tommy's problem in just being a hired gun. He's going against supernatural beings that are scary. And speaking of scary, Batman is in this story too as a guest. He is mostly in the shadows and in the dark night. It's good to know it's not just all shoot'em up violence all over. I find the quiet moments where the hitmen friends interact and talk to be very refreshing. It shows them as real people with similarities to what the readers talk about in real life. The contrast of the hilarious unbelievable violence contrasted with the quiet moments makes this issue and series a balanced and interesting read.

Manhunter v3 #32.50 USD/3.85 CAN @ December 2004 "Dark Shadows" Writer: Marc Andreyko Penciller: Jesus Saiz Inker: Jimmy Palmiotti Letterer: Phil Balsman Colorist: Steve Buccellato Editor: Harvey Richards & Joan Hilty Executive Editor: Dan DiDio Synopsis: We join the battle between Manhunter and Shadow Thief at night above the rooftops. Manhunter's inexperience showed as Shadow Thief's powers and battle ability appear to be more than she can handle. We flashback to eight hours earlier as Kate arrived in the hospital with her incapacitated son in an ambulance. A woman dressed as a nurse recognized her and called someone on a pay phone. We rejoin Manhunter's battle with Shadow Thief and this time she's holding her own against him. And she used tactics instead of just attacking with force. Lighting up her surroundings with the Manhunter Staff prevented Shadow Thief from using his shadow powers, and he resorted to throwing stiletto knives at her. Avoiding the stilettos, Manhunter lessened the Manhunter Staff's lightning glow, thus giving Shadow Thief his ability to use his powers once again, and was able to grab her staff from afar getting Manhunter to be off balanced and feel off the rooftop to plummet down to the streets. Having steel claws at her fingertips she managed to claw-grab the end of the roof. Shadow Thief came at her and tried to pry off her fingers so she'd fall. We flashback once again to the hospital as Kate's ex-husband arrived angry at her. Media arrived asking Kate Spencer to comment to a recording. She was about to deck the media personnel when the surgeon called for Ramsay's mom and dad. As per the surgeon, Ramsay is suffering from multiple wounds including brain swelling and they had to do an emergency operation to relieve the pressure in his skull. As they saw their son with tubes all over him, a teary-eyed Peter started lambasting Kate citing it is all her fault. And Kate just walked away from her ex-husband. As Kate was walking off we see the nurse that made the call earlier and the media personnel together as he handed her an envelope with cash. Outside, Kate saw a newspaper article approving Manhunter's actions against Copperhead. Fast forward to the battle going on, Shadow Thief is preening Manunter's fingers as she is about to fall to her death below. and as she is beginning to fall a light was shone on them by a flying helicopter overhead, and Shadow Thief temporarily lost his powers on the light-shoned areas. Manhunter grabbed at his hand which ripped from Shadow Thief. He screamed in agony. and Manunter kept falling as Shadow Thief followed her trying to regain his lost limb. And Manhunter crashed on a metallic screenboard above the first floor, and you hear broken machinery sounds from her body armor. She's out cold and dropped Shadow Thiefs hand to the ground below. Shadow Thief managed to reattached the severed limb back to his forearm. He wanted to finish off Manhunter, but he is thinking this might be a ruse, and left her and escaped. Later on, Manhunter regained consciousness and moved thus falling to the ground. She dragged herself and her broken Manhunter Staff through the alleyway to pickup the pieces and fight another day. Manhunter made her way to the rooftop across the hospital room where he husband is watching over her son. She decided to lose the personal weakness in order to be successful in her new endeavor, and this elicited a tear from her eye. Comments: This is a straightforward story with two scenes. The hospital flashback scene and intertwined with the current battle atop the roof of a building. The contrast in the stories showed perhaps why Manhunter was "off" in the fight against Shadow Thief. Her son is dying in the hospital, and she tracked Shadow Thief to clear her head and take him in. A distraction like this can get her killed early in the series. Fortunately for her, DC hasn't cancelled Mark Andreyko's run at this juncture.
