Hitman #3"A Rage in Arkham" Part Three 2.25 USD @ July 1996 Writer: Garth Ennis Penciler: John McCrea Inker: John McCrea Colorist: Carla Feeny & Heroic Age Letterer: Willie Schubert Editor: Dan Raspler & Peter Tomasi Executive Editor: Mike Carlin Synopsis: Mawzir stood over a fallen Tommy Monaghan. But instead of finishing him off, he gloated and went on a long monologue. Then the Arkannone showed up to the dismay of Mawzir, and they continued to talk offering Tommy Monaghan employment. And finally after a long while, Tommy picked up one of his own Magnums and pointed it at Mawzir's head and pulled the trigger downing the demon but not killing it. As Tommy ran away he threw a grenade at it. Killer Croc who was incarcerated in the Arkham Asylum was suddenly freed from the explosion bashed Mawzir's head in. Meanwhile the Batman and GCPD made their way in. Just in time, they along with Tommy Monaghan see Killer Croc crashed through the wall being shot at, and Mawzir emerged from the hole in the wall and started shooting at Batman, the Detective, and Tommy Monaghan. Croc grabbed Batman to do battle, but Batman grabbed a stone mallet from the ground and bashed Croc with it. As Tommy was escaping he came across a room where the Joker is tied upside down. Tommy shot him and continued running with Mawzir in hot pursuit. Batman arrived in the room moments later where a still laughing Joker told him Tommy shot an artery and asked for help while still laughing. The Detective caught up with Tommy and shot at him and was about to finish Tommy off but Mawzir arrived and blasted at them. Meanwhile, the Joker's wound is being bandaged by Batman. Batman caught up with the two and tackled Mawzir from behind and shrugged him off with his multiple arms, thus allowing Tommy and the Detective to waylay shots at him. And Mawzir returned shots their way nailing Tommy with more bullet wounds. Then Mawzir turned his attention to Batman. A shot from the Detective got Mawzir to drop one of his guns, and Tommy grabbed it and started shooting Mawzir with one of his own guns. A fallen Mawzir yielded to Tommy Monaghan, victorious over him. The Arkannone materialized again. He turned them down, and the left. Then Tommy turned Mawzir's weapon on Mawzir and cracked a joke and shot him point blank in the head, creating a crack on the Earth's ground. Tommy then turned to Batman telling him he could be blown away and Batman asked him what was preventing him from doing so. Tommy just told him that the Bats just doesn't know him. And he left leaving Batman and the Detective. In another part of Arkham a still laughing Joker vowed to carve his smile on Tommy's still living heart. And you have the Arkannone vowing this is not over with Tommy Monaghan. And outside Arkham Asylum as the sun began to rise, Tommy looked forward to a drink with his friends, some sleep, and most importantly a second date with Wendy. Comments: I liked the happy go lucky ending where Tommy is looking forward to his second date with Wendy. After all the wounds and what just transpired, that's what he's looking forward to along with having drinks with his friends and getting some sleep. It's what his readers look forward to also in real life. You just can't help but cheer for this guy.

Manhunter v3 #42.50 USD/3.85 CAN @ January 2005 "Secret Identities" Writer: Marc Andreyko Penciller: Jesus Saiz Inker: Jimmy Palmiotti Letterer: Jared K. Fletcher Colorist: Steve Buccellato Editor: Harvey Richards & Joan Hilty Synopsis: We join the story with Dylan Battles (under a new guise after making a deal with protective custody & witness protection program) as he recalled being a go-to tech guy for supervillains like Black Manta, Killer Frost, Two-Face, and the likes. He also recalled encountering the Bat Family of superheroes, Firestorm, and Aquaman. Then he remembered getting caught, beat up, and embarrassed against those superheroes. Then he woke up from his daydream as his wife screamed his name and he is once again in the backyard mowing the lawn. He entered the house and was told by his wife a beautiful woman is looking for him and is waiting at the front door. Upon opening the door, he couldn't believe it was Atty. Kate Spencer. She needed his help. She wanted him to fix the broken Manhunter staff weapon. He has a wife and child now. Dylan's wife is peeping through the window watching them talk, Kate Spencer suggested they talk elsewhere. They continue their discussion in a restaurant nearby. She threatened to leak his whereabouts to the super-villain fan site community which would definitely endanger his life if he doesn't help her. He answered he'll think about it, and headed outside the restaurant to return home. Upon arriving home he found his wife packed up and leaving with their child. She smacked him and walked out to their car and drove off. Dylan Battles then went to his shed and opened the locks. He went inside and went to an alarm box which opened a secret compartment that encompassed various techs and weapons back when he was with the criminal super-villains. He called Kate Spencer, and agreed to help her. Comments: Basically, Manhunter obtains a tec-guy to fix her broken weapons, and provide weaponry, along with becoming a future "sidekick."

Manhunter v3 #52.50 USD/3.85 CAN @ February 2005 "Four Feet Under" Writer: Marc Andreyko Penciller: Jesus Saiz Inker: Jimmy Palmiotti Letterer: Pat Brosseau Colorist: Steve Buccellato Editor: Rachel Gluckstern & Joan Hilty Synopsis: In an empty Western style village north of Los Angeles, The Manhunter, Kate Spencer is training against robotic versions of Cheetah and Grundy. She destroyed both, and was then attacked by the previous Manhunter. She was taken down, but had her weapon ready to destroy him, thus earning a victory. And the previous Manhunter unmasked revealing to be Dylan Battles. UNmasked both walked back to the car to leave the village. Dylan touched a sore spot when Kate checked him and told him that her personal life is not a topic of discussion. Dylan then told him what he did to enhance her suit. He tuned up the suit to link with the wearer's nervous system, making it feel like a second skin. Her suit had some goop left from Shadow Thief from their last battle, and he converted it to be used as a tracking device, where the star on Manhunter's chest will light up brighter as the suit gets closer to Shadow Thief. He also upgraded her gauntlets to have super bright lights that will literally light up Shadow Thief when she touches him. They leave the village and she'll contact Dylan when she needs him. We then have a short interlude of Shadow Thief talking to himself. Basically staying in the darkness. Holding balloons and back in her lawyer suit, Kate Spencer is back at the hospital to visit her bedridden son. Unfortunately, her ex-husband is there and telling her visiting hours are over, and she cannot put the balloons in his room. He obtained a temporary court order to keep Kate away from their son and that he's suing for full custody of their son. Kate threw the gifts at him, and posted him against the wall and threatened him. He told him that this isn't about their son, and that something else is bothering her. Perhaps her fear of defeat. He told her to be a mother for once. Knowing he is right, she walked out telling him to tell their son she misses him and that she is sorry. At the Los Angeles Federal Building she buried herself in work. An assistant was leading a group of people to her office and upon reaching it, opened the door and introduced the group to best federal prosecutor in America. He introduced them to her. The Justice League. Hawkman, Green Lantern John Stewart, Vixen, and Martian Manhunter was there to discuss recent events regarding the murder of Firestorm by Shadow Thief. They advised her Shadow Thief is in the Los Angeles area and has been seen with the new Manhunter. They are just extending a courtesy call to provide information. Kate responded that she will take Shadow Thief down in a court of law. Hawkman interjected that if he gets his hands on Shadow Thief before the law enforcement do, that there might not be anything left of him to be in a court. Martian Manhunter told her everyone is just upset about what happened and is feeling a raw nerve, and then they transported out of her office. Later that night, Manhunter went on patrol in Hollywood, and various areas in Los Angeles. She entered the Hollywood Cemetery, and by Copperhead's tombstone, was attacked by a deceased Copperhead which was partially surrounded with Shadow Thief's goo. He's animating and controlling the dead corpse and attacked her getting the best of her. As Copperhead's hands prepared to choke her, she grabbed her laser-light dagger and severed the black goo from the dead corpse and grabbed a large rock on the other hand and waylaid a powerful punch send the corpse down. She then attacked Shadow Thief and got her gauntlets inside his chest and literally lit him up. His physical chest is exposed, and a part of him was asking for help, while Shadow Thief sent her flying through one of the graves. The Justice League was on patrol that night over Los Angeles, and picked up Vixen unexpectedly. Manhunter was about to emerge from the grave she crashed into when suddenly she saw Green Lantern attack Shadow Thief. She went back inside the grave and hid from the Justice League. Hawkman bashed Shadow Thief across the face with his mace, and Vixen was prepared to slice him up when she was held back by Martian Manhunter. The Justice League handed over a knocked out Shadow Thief to the law enforcement that arrived later that night. Kate Spencer drove away and a thought crossed her mind, that if she can't kill Shadow Thief that night, then she'll do it the old-fashioned way, by obtaining a verdict of death during a trial. Back at the cemetery, Martian Manhunter sensed a familiar thought. Comments: Manhunter isn't just a superhero comic book. It's a commentary on the life of regular working people going through family difficulties. In this case, an ex-husband preventing her from visiting their hospitalized son. So it is not just a conflict between good and evil. There are grey area conflicts as well. This issue is an "Identity Crisis" DC big event tie-in. And the four members of the Justice League making a brief appearance is a welcome addition to the cover and inside pages of this issue. We get to see illustrator, Jesus Saiz illustrate how he interpreted each J.L. member. It's always great to see various illustrators draw other superheroes with their own styles.

Hitman #4"Ten Thousand Bullets" Part One 2.25 USD @ August 1996 Writer: Garth Ennis Penciler: John McCrea Inker: John McCrea Colorist: Carla Feeny & Heroic Age Letterer: Willie Schubert Editor: Dan Raspler & Peter Tomasi Synopsis: We joined Tommy in the middle of a rainy night sitting outside the entrance to territory with a dead man lying on the background. He's saying he lost his best friend and the girl he thought he had a chance with, and is wondering of God is trying to tell him something. Ten nights previously, a killer named Crazy Dick Dunston broke into Tommy's home waking Tommy up to kill him. Tommy didn't recognize him, and Crazy Dick justified who he was and how dangerous he was. Next thing that happened is his head is blown off from Tommy's gun that he was holding hidden underneath his blanket. Crazy Dick's bloodied corpse crashed on his floor, and Tommy grumbled and went back to sleep. At Moe Dubelz's mansion, he is holding a meeting in his conference room with his underlings. His conjoined twin brother Joe who's dead and rotting away caused one of the men to speak at the table to have the window opened and admitted to Joe it's because of the smell. And Moe blew him away with his gun. Tommy Monaghan did this, killed his dad and and Joe, leaving him a half man. He wanted Tommy dead and no one could do it, even for a hundred grand. Johnny Navarone, the Miami Ice Machine, arrived in the conference saying because it's not enough. Moe wanted to know if he's the same Johnny that took out the Mazarati Mob, and if he can prove it. He took his gun out and shot at Moe's location, ricocheting the bullets of his steel chair and hitting the two bodyguards of Moe that were behind Johnnty. Moe hired him on the spot. Johnny wanted five hundred grand, with half up front. Moe told everyone to leave and told Johnny he there's something he needed to know about Tommy, which Johnny Navarone disregarded as he knew everything about Monaghan already. Outside his compound, Johnny explained to Moe about Tommy Monaghan's origin. That he's a metahuman and can see and sense people coming. But he found a way to sneak up on him. At Pat Noonan's apartment, he and Tommy were talking about betting in baseball games, and about the Batman going after Tommy Monaghan. he was thinking of leaving Gotham just to avoid that problem. He told Tommy about a ten grand hit on some superhero in another city who was killing drug dealers and selling their junk after he killed them. Then told him Natt called looking for him. Outside on a public phone, he called Lincoln, the crooked cop, about the ten grand hit. It's on a superhero calling himself Nightfist. Later that evening, Tommy is in bed with Wendy, and she admitted being in love with him. It scared him because it sounded really good and he's not used to hearing it. She said it's because he's a nice guys among other things. He just sighed if she only knew. Midnight by Natt's place, he almost blew away Tommy with his gun, before holding it instead of shooting it. They talked for a while catching up since they haven't seen each other for three years. Walking outside the apartment, Tommy told him about thinking about doing a ten grand hit, and Natt told him he's back in town because his mother died. He was saying about not swearing it again because it bothered his mom when she was alive and looked up. Both men pulling their guns out, they started shooting at dozens of sword-wielding ninjas who's jumping at them from the rooftop. And all the ninjas got hit and landed bloodied in the ground, with the exception of one. Tommy tried to make him talk stepping hard on the guy's balls and gonads, and the ninja finally admitted they were going after the one hundred grand bounty from Moe Dublez. And then they were attacked by gun wielding ninjas driving an SUV. Getting inside Natt's car, they tried to leave with the ninjas in pursuit. Tommy got a grenade gun and shot at the ninja's SUV and blew it up. And they continued their chit-chat inside the car. Tommy finally agreeing to do the ten grand hit on Nightfist, and Natt is going to have his back. And just like that Tommy signed his best friend's death warrant. Comments: Things started bleak in the issue. But within the pages of this issue, things looked "bright" for Tommy Monaghan. His best friend is back in town, and he has a girlfriend that is in love with him. There's a new antagonist in town, who is very dangerous. And he disclosed that he may have a way of sneaking up on Tommy Monaghan's metahuman powers in order to kill him. This should be an interesting confrontation in future issues.

Grant Morrison did a good and decent job with Animal Man ... this series is whole lot better than his X-Men and one notch below of his JLA Masterpiece. I do enjoy his Animal Man Series ... sabongero and you captured it quite nicely. You said it MechaGodzilla . I asked in the CCF "Ask a question" thread what Grant Morrison series they would recommend, and many suggested his JLA series. I tried it, but for some reason, Porter's illustrations didn't appeal to me, and sort of swayed my interest away from that Grant Morrison book. Some suggested Morrison's Batman, but then I picked up Animal Man. The illustrations were simple and not highly stylized. Easy on the eyes. And the stories were phenomenal. I have to say, I like it a notch more than Andreyko's Manhunter and Ennis's Hitman series for now.

Hitman #5"Ten Thousand Bullets" Part Two 2.25 USD @ September 1996 Writer: Garth Ennis Penciler: John McCrea Inker: John McCrea Colorist: Carla Feeny & Heroic Age Letterer: Willie Schubert Editor: Dan Raspler & Peter Tomasi Synopsis: The violent vigilante, Nightfist broke up a drug deal, and violently dishing out unrestricted violence against the drug dealers. He didn't know one of them was an undercover Gotham City detective, who before passing out put a tracer on Nightfist, who walked away from the scene carrying the brief case containing the drugs. At a burger joint, Tommy and Natt were talking about Nightfist as they ate and ordered their over the top meals. At Lt. Lincoln's office, he received a call from Tommy Monaghan, and told the female detective, Tiegel to leave so she can't hear his conversation with The Hitman. He gave Tommy the update on Nightfist, who had a tracer placed on him. Tommy and Natt went back to Pat's place, where it's not poker night anymore. Pat showed them the new pool table and that's the new game for the hitmen that gather up there to play. They told each other stories. And one of them was Tommy and Natt's story from the war. They were left alone for the night, and in the middle of it, they saw incoming soldiers and opened fire without asking for the password and lit them up. What they didn't know was they wiped out an S.A.S. patrol, and not the enemy. And they tried to bury the bodies before they were caught on the friendly fire. Storied kept being told, but one of the hitmen, Hacken, smacked Pat for telling him off about how he messed up on his shot at the pool table. Tommy and another hitman pulled a gun on Hacken, who told Pat he's no good and only hides behind Tommy and the other hitmen. One of the hitmen cooled off Hacken and got him to leave with him, thus diffusing the situation. Tommy and Natt went outside and continued their talk. A little later, Pat came out and handed them timer-grenades. And Tommy and Nat went to an alley where Nightfist is frequently sighted and they both repeatedly had Nat pull the gun on Tommy faking a mugging. Until they hit the jackpot and Nightfist showed up. And Nightfist went to prevent the mugging. Unknown to all three, Johnny Navarone was in the area and sees this happening. Natt and Tommy pulled their guns out and unleashed a barrage of shots at Nightfist. And when he was down, a grenade was thrown at Natt and Tommy, which exploded, and Johnny Navarone was seen approaching them. Comments: Hired killers can be acquaintances and even hang out in the same place, but it's like a ticking time bomb and anything can set them off against each other. You see a lot of the bottom part of the sewers and scum in Gotham City that populate the pages of Hitmen. Johnny Navarone is a good antagonist for Tommy Monaghan. He doesn't come across as stupid, and has great intelligence and savvy as shown at the end of the issue where he knew where Tommy would be, and waited for the action to finish and attack them before they knew what happened.

Manhunter v3 #62.50 USD/3.85 CAN @ March 2005 "Trial By Fire" Writer: Marc Andreyko Penciller: Jesus Saiz Inker: Jimmy Palmiotti Letterer: Rob Leigh Colorist: Steve Buccellato Editor: Rachel Gluckstern & Joan Hilty Synopsis: In the DCU's equivalent to CNN news, Federal Prosecutor and Lead Attorney, Kate Spencer and Defense Attorney to the Stars, Leslie Carter are debating about Shadow Thief's upcoming trial and are making preparations for that upcoming trial. In a maximum security prison where the room is lit up very brightly, the public defender attorney visited Mr. Sands, Shadow Thief who seemed to be in pain separated from his shadow leotard, which is housed in a container, and securely contained. Back at DCU's equivalent to CNN Studios, Kate Spencer received a phone call from what seemed to be a stalker claiming to be her dad. She hung up the phone on him but not before she had a memory flashback to something bad in the past where as a child she witnessed her alcoholic father assaulted and killed her cigarette smoking mother. Elsewhere, in a bus stopover, a man approached a hooded man for a light so he can smoke his cigarette. He took of the mask to show a robotic-armorlike face underneath, and killed the man asking for a light by shooting something that went through his torso. Back in her office, as Kate Spencer prepared for her trial, her thoughts went back to her parents, and then she stared at her son's picture, thinking about her son, and her quality as a parent. Her assistant asked her how are they going to find the witnesses, and she suddenly had an idea and called for another assistant, someone named Johnson, to get in there. Up in the surface of the moon, at JLA HQ, Hawkman, Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman are in a meeting talking about killing and not killing the super-villains who are putting their families in harms way. There is a debate between which side of the fence kind of action they are going to do. The teleporter was activated from Wonder Woman's embassy, teleporting Mr. Johnson up in the moon base. He was very nervous and had trouble telling them what he needed from the prosecutor's office. Members of the JLA were clowning around and messing with him because of his nervous state. Wonder Woman handed him a glass of water so he can rehydrate and cool down his nerves. Mr. Johnson then mentioned three of the superheroes names and locations and handed then a subpoena telling them they have been served. The clowning around stopped, and the superheroes aren't happy about being served a subpoena. Later that evening, Kate Spencer called her ex-husband's home and spoke with him cordially with Ramsey in the background playing video games. He yelled to his dad that she better not be smoking, and hearing this, Kate placed the cigarette back in the pack. She hung up the phone and prepared to leave when her window broke into fragments from an explosion outside. Peeking out, she saw a ten foot villain Shrapnel assaulting the police force. After donning her Manhunter costume and wielding her power rod, Kate battle Shrapnel outside. It was even back and forth. She then utilized the power of a severed electrical cable line and zapped Shrapnel with it along with her Power Rod thus melting parts of his metal sheathing. She was happy to take down a villain without actually getting beaten up. From a distance, and monitoring his video screens, the villain named Calculator saw Manhunter take down the super-villain he sent to get rid of her. He was on the phone with a woman and was asking how fast can she fly to L.A. Comments: The most phenomenal part of this issue is a panel where Batman was smiling and making a joke comparing the assistant D.A. to the Riddler. Then Hawkman cracking a joke too. It's great to see the JLA team naturally interact with each other in a lighthearted manner. Andreyko did a phenomenal job in this quiet moment scene. And the illustrator Saiz, captured this interaction perfectly and showed it in several panels. Once could wonder how an Andreyko written JLA series would be presented with these kind of moments.

Comments: Finally, we finished the alternate travelling adventures of the Flash. The status quo is back. And in the next issue, we have the beginning of the creative team of Geoff Johns and Scott Kollins, who will work together in The Flash comic books for the several years together as a creative team. And this book and his work on JSA is where Geoff Johns starts to develop his legacy leading him to eventually become the President and Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics in 2010, and also retaining those titles, he was also promoted to President of DC Entertainment in 2016. Not bad for a guy whose call was accidentally picked up by Richard Donner and given an internship in his director's office. Interesting stuff that you shared about Geoff Johns here and thanks for sharing it. I didn't know that Geoff did an internship with Richard Donner.

Interesting stuff that you shared about Geoff Johns here and thanks for sharing it. I didn't know that Geoff did an internship with Richard Donner. I remember stopping reading comic books in around 1989, and didn't pickup another comic book until around 2006. Then in the summer of 2006 I just happened to be scrolling in the internet and I came across an article that Hal Jordan is dead and no longer Green Lantern... of course I was over a decade late in the news. I wasn't in the comic book world loop. So I went to a local comic book store and I was shown a Green Lantern Rebirth book collection of the limited series by Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver. That was my first "comic book" read in about 17 years at the time. And it got me interested in reading comic books again.

Manhunter v3 #72.50 USD/3.85 CAN @ April 2005 "Trial By Fire Part 2: Witness for the Prosecution" Writer: Marc Andreyko Penciller: Jesus Saiz Inker: Fernando Blanco Letterer: Rob Leigh Colorist: Steve Buccellato Editor: Rachel Gluckstern & Joan Hilty Synopsis: There is a lot of hoopla surrounding the trial of Shadow Thief as hundreds of civilians are outside, and the media is in full force covering the trial. Hawkman is sworn in court and gave his deposition. Then the defense counselor (Atty. Logan) knowing hos to push Hawkman's buttons, made his credibility get thrown out the window by citing there are so many different guises of "Hawkmen" since World War Two and wasn't Hawkman just arrested recently by the St. Roch police department in connection with a series of serial murders. Hawkman lost his cool on the stand, and had to apologize to the judge for his outburst and damaging the witness stand. Superman is called next. And was sworn in despite the counserlor's objection. Superman gave his deposition. Again the counselor tried to dismember the superhero's credibility citing Superman died once and to answer yes or no. He answered affirmitively, so credibility still intact. Then the counselor asked him is legal identity and Superman refused to answer. He is under oath, and the counselor made mince meat of his "tag line" which was Truth, Justice, and the American Way. Superman's credibility is shot. By this time you can see smoke coming out of lead prosecutor Atty Kate Spencer. In a mountain home, Dan Richards, the former Golden Age Manhunter is walking his dog, Thor. He entered his home, and his dog started barking sensing something is wrong and ran outside. The dog is then thrown through his window, dead. A shadowy figure entered his home and killed Dan Richards. Security forces were moving Shadow Thief, who was incarcerated in his own "Pope Mobile" to keep his powers from acting up. Then the light in the hallway started flickering. Outside the federal building Kate entered her car and was looking for a cigarette before starting the ignition. Back inside, the building's lights went out, and something slashed the throats of all the security men with Shadow Thief now free, but confused. Outside, Kate decided not to smoke and started her car's ignitions and felt something was wrong and immediately jumped out of the car, and it blew up. Inside, we find out it was the villainess, Cheshire that rescued Shadow Thief. Comments: In the pages of Birds of Prey under Gail Simone, Cheshire was almost as deadly as Black Canary and Lady Shiva. And when she took out all those security men in the dark, showed just what she can do as a formidable opponent. Kate's rigged car explosion outside was perhaps due to Cheshire's actions as well. It's going to be interesting when Manhunter takes on Cheshire in the future issues. Superheroes are tough, and can battle and win slugfest against the strongest and craziest supervillains. However, in a court of law, a counselor can make mince meat out of them and have their credibility questioned, and make them look bad in front of the jurors. Even a boy scout like Superman was handed a smackdown by the wily defense lawyer. Winning a physical battle is one thing, winning a court battle against lawyers, is another. Here is a great lesson for the aftermath of a battle. Superheroes may have won the battle. But bring it in front of a trial, and lo and behold... their vulnerabilities in a court of law is multiplied many times over. Mark Andreyko makes a great showcase here by showing what actually happens behind the scenes in a DC Universe aftermath. And this is where reality in a superhero world takes center stage, and makes for a good show. We get the moral dilemma that superhero secret identities bring. Jesus Saiz captures facial expressions in his illustrations. His renditions of the Justice League is impressive, and actually made Superman's faceial expression and body language show just how uncomfortable he was when the counselor made him squirm in being unable to answer a cross examination question. All those supervillains with unearthly powers couldn't make Superman squirm, but this counselor did, and Saiz nailed it.

Hitman #6"Ten Thousand Bullets" Part Three 2.25 USD @ November 1996 Writer: Garth Ennis Penciler: John McCrea Inker: John McCrea Colorist: Carla Feeny & Heroic Age Letterer: Willie Schubert Editor: Dan Raspler & Peter Tomasi Synopsis: Johnny Navarone goes on a soliloquy about going from town to town and finding out a hitman claiming to be the best, only for him to gun him down and kill him. He puts a bullet in Tommy, and was about to put the killing blow when Natt threw a grenade at them while warning Tommy. They escaped in his car and drove off, and headed to Tommy's girlfriend's home, who was shocked and surprised to find a duo at her doorsteps who are both bleeding profusely. Natt advised her to calm down, don't call the cops or the hospital, and to call Tommy's friend Sean, who will fix him up. Crime boss Moe Dubelz is disappointed that Johnny Navarone let Tommy escaped, as he wants Monaghan dead before he dies. Navarone claimed that he know's Tommy's best friend is Noonan, and that Monaghan will be dead soon. The "superhero" known as Nightfist is squeezing one of Dublez's henchmen to reveal who tried to kill Nightfist in the previous issue, and he found out that Lincoln double crossed him to draw out Monaghan, and Dubelz and Navarone were supposed to kill Monaghan. Nightfist vowed vengeance on all four. A week has passed and Tommy Monaghan finally woke up from his coma in Wendy's bed. She immediately asked him to leave since he can get up and get dressed up, but not before slapping him in the face. Tommy found Noonan and Natt in her living room, and was glad to see them, and they left. He was going to rest up some more and then go after Navarone, then they passed the corrupt cop, Lincoln at a hot dog stand. And they ran over his feet with the car, permanently injuring him, and could hear him screaming blocks away. They arrived at Pat Noonan's place and it was a shambles as if someone ransacked the place. They found Pat all cut up and barely alive in the bathtub. He told Tommy and Natt that Johnny Navarone came looking for Monaghan, but he didn't reveal anything no matter what Navarone did to him. And Pat died. Monaghan told Natt they're going to Dubelz mansion and kill him, Navarone, and everyone in that place. Natt agreed. Comments: I loved the John McCRea's use of shadows and blacks in the illustrations in this series. It embellished the crime noir feeling that Garth Ennis is telling. It set up the mood to be bleak and dangerous and the reader knows this is not a superhero book, but is a crime fiction story instead. This is a very violent series, and the cover, showcased Navarone gunning down Monaghan and blood spurting out of Monaghan's body. The irony is that Monaghan is dressed in all white, while Monaghan's upper torso is dressed in black. The perception of good and evil reversed in the colors worn by the protagonist and antagonist. The only redeeming quality in Monaghan has been having a quality relationship with a woman who loved him. And now, that's gone as well after revealing to her, that he is a cold-blooded killer, and even unable to answer her how many people he has killed as he lost track of counting them. Revenge is on his mind, not only because Johnny Navarone almost killed him in the previous issue. It is deeper than that now and more personal. Navarone killed a good friend of his, and he has only a few friends. He's going to put an end to Navarone, Dubelz, and his crew. And move on from this chapter in his life. Besides being a book about violence and killing, Garth Ennis portrayed loyalty among friends. And loyalty can come at a price, sometimes with their lives. But at the end of the day, no one is there for you when it counts the most other than your real friends. And the theme of friendship and loyalty resonates in the entire issue, and in the entire series so far, and that is the appeal to Hitman.

Hitman #7"Ten Thousand Bullets" Part Four 2.25 USD @ November 1996 Writer: Garth Ennis Penciler: John McCrea Inker: John McCrea Colorist: Carla Feeny & Heroic Age Letterer: Willie Schubert Editor: Dan Raspler & Peter Tomasi Synopsis: Corrupt cop, Nicky Lincoln arrived at mob boss, Moe Dubelz's mansion to let him know that Tommy Monaghan is still alive. And then nat and Tommy arrived crashing their car through the wall and crushing Nicky Lincoln. A gunfight ensued between Nat and Tommy with the goons of Moe Dubelz as hitman, Johnny Navaronne led Dubelz to safety. Outgunned, Nat and Tommy waylay most of Dubelz men. Crimefighter Nightfist arrived and crashed the scene but was gunned down and his body riddled with bullets from the combatting men. Nat went one on one with an overgrown chef and killed him. Meanwhile Tommy made it upstairs and had a shootout with Dubelz who even though was riddled with bullets managed to take down Tommy Monaghan. In a last ditch effort, Monaghan with his free hand drew one of his guns and blew Dubelz head off, thus killing the mob boss. Navarone was still around and shot Tommy in arm, but Tommy was able to let a shot off. And it took out Johnny Navarone's trigger hand. He tried to reason with Tommy not to kill him, but Tommy killed him anyway and then just sat on the roof. Nat came up and gave him a small lecture about life, and the two friends walked away. Comments: This is the conclusion to this 7-issue storyline. And what a way to end it. A slam bang all out shoot out action from beginning to end. Violence and comedy all rolled into one. Hilarity ensued during the violent scenes when the crimefighter bursted in the scene to take down the bad guys and was riddled with bullets and was not even relevant in the issue. It just showed how much Ennis didn't like superheroes. At the end of the issue, one can't help bu feel sorry for Tommy who at this point lost a girlfriend and a best friend. And the two walking into the sunset at the end of the issue is a classic American Western ending where the good guys rode off into the sunset at the end of the movie.

Manhunter v3 #82.50 USD/3.85 CAN @ May 2005 "Trial By Fire Part 3: Bad Influence" Writer: Marc Andreyko Penciller: Javier Pina Inker: Jimmy Palmiotti Letterer: Jared K. Fletcher Colorist: Steve Buccellato Editor: Rachel Gluckstern & Joan Hilty Synopsis: There is someone trying to kill Shadow Thief, and also wanted Kate Spencer dead. As Manhunter caught up to Shadow Thief, the deadly assassin, Cheshire arrived. She did battle with Manhunter and managed to scratch her face with her poisonous fingernails/claws, which turned out to be Black Mamba poison. As Manhunter's constitution and fighting abilities started to deteriorate, she managed to activate the magnetism on her rod which pulled Cheshire's metallic claws and attached it to her rod. Bleeding and in agonizing pain, Cheshire escaped but vowed she'll get even with Manhunter some day. Manhunter brought Shadow Thief above to the cops and jetissoned out of the area, and arrived at Dylan's apartment. Dylan's work with the criminal organization Kobra proved useful as he had Black Mamba anti-venom available and saved Kate Spencer's life. She barely made it to her court appearance in regards to Firestorm/Ronnie Raymond's family deposition. They honored their late son, and as Kate was interviewed outside, at another part of town, another assassin, Marlyn, destroyed the television because she annoyed him. And a woman named Phobia suddenly materialized to announce her arrival. Comments: Gotta love the battle between Cheshire and Manhunter. And Kate using her brains to defeat the enemy while deteriorating from the poison. I didn't know Cheshire's claws were artificial and metallic. That was a cool Andreyko move to end that battle in a very interesting way. Of course he added the cliched "villain will have her revenge" dialogue at the end of that battle just before escaping. The dynamic of having two different stories, one a superhero, and the other a trial lawyer, makes for a very interesting and layered story. Sometimes a slugfest is nice, but it's all better to have those quiet moments where we find out more about a superhero from the point of view of other people, like loved ones. It added character depth to that superhero. Unfortunately, in this case, a deceased superhero. Nonetheless, it humanizes them.

Wonder Woman v2 #1952.25 USD/3.75 CAN @ October 2003 "The Mission" Writer: Greg Rucka Penciller: Drew Johnson Inker: Ray Snyder Colorist: Trish Mulvhill Letterer: Todd Klein Editor: Ivan Cohen Synopsis: Jonah McCarthy has joined the staff of the Embassy of Themyscira. The story revolves around Jonah's first day and Diana's secretary shows him what happens behind the scenes on a typical day in the Themysciran Embassy. He meets the chef, who was a distant relative of The Minotaur from the Greek mythology legends. He is star struck when Superman just happened to drop by to hand something over for Wonder Woman. The story also shifts to a battle with a brutal African dictator, whose country was not named, then it goes back to the behind the scenes activities in the Themysciran Embassy. Wonder Woman apprehended the Dictator/General without a single cost of life, and brought him to the U.S. military forces. Then the last couple of pages has Wonder Woman back at the Embassy on the other side of the world, and checks on the new staff, and brings him to the roof, and ended the story by flying him around to see the city from her point of view. Comments: This is Greg Rucka's first issue on the Wonder Woman title. We don't even see Wonder Woman until the last couple of pages. But we are introduced to her supporting cast and the setting of her Embassy. We get to meet some of these people and learn something about the Amazon Princess. We get to learn about the inner workings of her new home base of operations. An interesting note, her chef is The Minotaur, and we learn that the meals are vegetarian. After all if the cook looks like prime beef, would you serve meat? It's a good introduction into the Greg Rucka Wonder Woman universe. The Adam Hughes cover is great. I like the mirror reflection on the pilot's visor as an approaching Wonder Woman is about to punch a hole through his fighter jet.
