So I guess today we should wish Superman a Happy Birthday! For those who have never seen it, this was the cover to that issue of Time... and an excerpt from the issue on the Superman birthday... Not sure where the tradition started, but there was a CBS Prime Time Special for Supes 50th that this issue was riding the coattails of and it mentioned the Feb 29 tradition already being in place. So Happy Leap Day Birthday Superman... -M

That issue came out when I was in college but I remember knowing as a kid that Supe's b-day was Feb 29th.
I thought it was pretty clever when I first heard it.

A passerby would doubtless fail to realize what a great feat the hero is accomplishing, and just wonder "Why is Superman doing a hand stand?"

I remember a story in the 1950s when he juggled planets while riding a tricycle. That night Lois tried to sneak up on him while sleeping to cut his hair with a pair of scissors thereby proving Clark was really Superman. The story spent more time on Supes vs Scissors than juggling a solar system

I first read of his birthday being February 29th in one of the "Ask the Answer Man" columns. I think Julie Schwartz came up with it about the time of the Superman movie. The story "For the Man Who Has Everything" also shows the birthday date of February 29th.
So Superman is 19. (there was no Feb. 29th in the year 2000)
