Ennio Morricone has finally received an Oscar!
The man is a god of the film score, and his "special" Oscar from a few years back doesn't cut it. I'm glad he finally got his due this year.

I was not aware that he won as I do not watch the Oscars anymore. The man has scored some of my favorite films including The Man with No Name Trilogy, Once Upon A Time in the West, The Thing and The Untouchables...to only name a scant few of his amazing works. Finally credit where credit is due!

I'm a huge huge Morricone fan as well, but mostly of his non movie work, especially his work within his band

I had no idea Morricone had a non-movie career! I'll have to look it up.

I had no idea Morricone had a non-movie career! I'll have to look it up. What?! Morricone only did movie soundtrack for the moey at first, he was deeply involved with improv, avant garde and electronic music.. I avidly collect all recordings of his group : www.discogs.com/artist/146775-Gruppo-di-Improvvisazione-Nuova-ConsonanzaHe also recorded a few library albums, most often with the members of the group, but as it usualy is the case with library records, no credit was given but the composer's. That one is by far my fave as you get the traditionnal Gruppo crew with a Bernard Hermann like composition : www.discogs.com/E-Morricone-Controfase/master/886994waxpoetics.com/features/guest-blog/the-bizarre-mythical-lost-album-of-ennio-morricone/My other favorite Morricone LP is a collaboration with brazilian top singer Chico Buarque : www.discogs.com/Chico-Buarque-De-Hollanda-Ennio-Morricone-Per-Un-Pugno-Di-Samba/release/4468811(my fave tracks starts at 9:30 something, and even more at 21:45, cheer beauty!) There's an international version of this on which Chico sings in Brasilian, but the choriss being italian and much better at it, they decided to record a version of this in Italian, and Chico's voice in Italian sounds more dope than anything else I know I coud go on forever with Morricone being that I probably own around 150 LPs of his, but alas, what really matters now is people start getting he's far more than his soundtracks. I met him a couple of times in Roma, and he told me most of his soundtrack making was pure distraction as he's always heavily been into avant garde music, investigating tonality at its most extreme.

John Williams and Morricone battling it out was like a cinematic clash of titans. Good on the Academy for finally recognizing Morricone's talent.

My favorite scores from Ennio Morricone are The Mission and Cinema Paradiso. It was nice to see him win a regular Oscar years after getting an honorary one.

Reminds one of John Buscema saying how much he disliked superhero comcis - all the while being so good at drawing them! Except of course that Buscema never had a second career as an avant-garde painter ... Thanks for those links, they both sound good. My previous exposure to Samba music has been limited to The Legendary Joao Gilberto compilation (highly recommended to anyone who hasn't already tried his stuff).

My brief glance at the wiki page left me confused but probably I just didn't read it carefully enough.

Ah, I guess you could say the difference betwwen the two is the same as between brass and folk, hahaha. Bossa is intimate and sensual, when Samba is party music, you can dance it alone. All brazillian music has to be considered in regard to its relation to the body.
