^^ American musical forms -- from bluegrass to jazz to rock 'n' roll to hip hop -- really are one of the greatest and most positive gifts that the U.S. has given to the world.

I tried creating a thread like this back in the old CBR community forum and within days it had descended into a viper's nest of arguments and negativity, mostly centering around American foreign policy, and it was unceremoniously locked by the mods. That has always bugged me, because, just like here, I'm not usually one to start a thread and I only had the best intentions at heart. Of course, we here at the CCF are a much more cultured lot, on the whole, so I'm gonna give this thread another go and I hope that it won't again descend into chaos and nastiness. .... God bless the USA! I'm glad I stumbled on this thread. And unlike the other community you mentioned, the members of this forum are more cordial and mature, and this type of subject can actually be a good discussion. I would have to say it is the subtle things that make this country great. And one of the things I love about it is something this simple, which I don't think the majority of foreign people will not experience in their country. I was trying an alternate route to JFK New York Intl Airport, and took the public bus. JFK New York Intl Airport has highways upon highways along with overpasses and underpasses all over. It is so big that it has it's own bus transportation system, and subway. Also, three NYC public bus transport goes through the various terminals and cargo areas. That is how big it is, albeit bigger than other countries' main cities. Now getting to my point. Here's why I love the subtle things in this country. I was in the public bus transport and as it entered the highway and there is an overpass passing the two 5-lane highways in the airport, there was a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 777 that crossed the combined ten lane highway above. I was literally looking at the underbelly wings and engine of the plane above as it crossed the highway and rolled to the the other runway on the other side. Simple things like this makes me love this country. It's not perfect but I'm happy with it. At the same time I like that NYC is a melting pot. And if you go to other cities across the nation, it is different and has its own "voice" and what it is known for.

We can deep fry anything. Yes, but so can Scotland - Mars Bars, Pizzas, Ice Cream ... You beat me to it. I've told my daughter that love of deep frying stuff is the main thing that keeps the Scots from taking over the world. We either die early of heart disease or are too full of delicious fried things to be bothered with conquest.

Having been in 42 out of 50 States in the USA - Every State is unique and that's makes us great!; and having said that we're an unique country because every state can offer something different, exciting, and diverse. From Kentucky's Bluegrass to Texas Oil and Cattle, From Maine's Fishing to Florida's Oranges, From Washington's Salmon to Iowa's Wheat Fields, From Hawaii's Pineapples to California's Entertainment, and so forth ... and that's why we call it home. United States of America is so unique and that's why we are called the
Melting Pot of the World because everyone wants to be here ... that's why I love about the USA!

I just wanted to add to some of the great musicians on this list, even though Confessor kind of covered the entire category, I'll just add them anyway because they make my life better.: *Elizabeth Cotten *Ella Fitzgerald *Nina Simone *Sufjan Stevens (and most of the Asthmatic Kitty family) *Joanna Newsom *Tom Waits *Shara Worden *St. Vincent (Annie Clark) THERE ARE SO MANY AMAZING, HOME-GROWN-Y AMERICAN MUSICIANS. <3 And I simply do not have time to list them all. But I love them most.

I love the American Ideal of a meritocracy -- where anyone can make it if they work hard enough. Also the ideas of due process, checks and balances, all the cool stuff we learned about in History class. That being said, we're very far from those ideals, and I feel like we fall farther every day. There are many countries in the world that lack America's ideals and yet surpass its reality. That strikes me as tragic. Sorry, was that too negative? Hey at least you have ideals... If I had to choose a single thing its the meritocracy you talk of (no idea myself, Ive never heard the term). While we have freedom here, and democracy, and hobbits there is still faith that the State will look after us so why try too hard. NZ is still living in the past in so many respects, a very naive nation, currently embroiled in arguing over replacing the National Flag my grandfather fought and bled for 60 years ago. I love the ideal you have of anyone working hard enough has a chance, yeah we equally have that chance but the mindset here is "dont worry too much". Ive certainly advocated more for American rather than British as Ive always disliked being the product of colonialism (not trying to be offensive here Confessor) and still be answering to a foreign Crown. I like a lot of things about your culture, love a lot of mine too, and would love to see it for myself sometime. But damn man, guns... shudder... hillbillies...shudder... Trump...shudder, shudder, shudder.

Texas Oklahoma Louisiana Mississippi Alabama Georgia Minnesota Wisconsin I will hit both Oklahoma and Texas in 2017. I will visit both Minnesota and Wisconsin in 2019. The remaining four in the South sometimes before 2024. All 50 States before 2024.
