CBR is reporting that long time Marvel artist Paul Ryan has passed away at the age of 66. This is a sad moment and a bit of a shock for me personally, as I had the pleasure of taking a class on drawing comic books from Paul back in the 1990's. At the time he was in the height of his heyday as the current artist on Iron Man and Fantastic Four. He previously had drawn Avengers and West Coast Avengers, as well as D.P. 7 - a personal favorite of mine - and Squadron Supreme. He also drew Superman for DC Comics, and is the only artist who worked on both Spider-Man and Superman's wedding issues. He had a very clean, classic style; his art wasn't showy or flashy, but he was an excellent storyteller. Recently he was a mainstay at all the local cons around New England, so I had the pleasure of meeting with him a number of times over the years. Since leaving comic books, he's been the regular artist on the Phantom comic strip for a long time. Very sad.

Oh man, it was a punch in the stomach to read this. I really liked his work on FF and the Flash comic.

I have only relatively recently discovered Paul Ryan's art, through reading the 'Iron Man Epic: War Games'; he took over from JRJR at the start of the 'Dragon Seed Saga'. His synergy with John Byrne (who was writing I.M. at the time) was fantastic. His rendering of the battles of Fin Fang Foom and his fellow dragons against Iron Man and Rhodey is incredibly dynamic. I notice, browsing the issues in the TPB, that the credits name Ryan and inker Wiacek before Byrne, which in 'Dragon Seed' is very fitting because the art really carries and elevates the story; Byrne being a great artist in his own right, seems to have written out his plots to play on Ryan's strengths.
I am sorry he passed away so soon. I think you're very fortunate to have received art lessons from him.

Paul Ryan is one of those artists that I truly admired - I adore his clean, crisp, great inking, and most of all done a terrific job on the Fantastic Four, Squadron Supreme, Superman, and Spider-Man & Iron Man.

I liked his Superman work the best as that clean style reminded me of Curt Swan's work.
66 is not old.
