Published: November 1998 Synopsis: "Usagi is on his way to collect the outlaw's bounty for Gen when he stops to entertain some children. He tells them a classic folk tale, Momotaro, placing himself in the role of the hero who was born from a peach, as he goes off to battle evil ogres with the help of three companions. There are two things that I love about this story, first it's the fact that these are the children that Stray Dog helps and I love those kinds of little connections and the second is the fantastic folk tale. And when I say fantastic I mean it, an old couple wishes for a child and find one in a peach who grows up to have a grand adventure. It's one of those folk tales that every culture seems to share some how, an infertile old couple granted a wondrous child with some kind of moral at the end. I've always wondered how that happens.

This is one of the funnest issues of Usagi Yojimbo, I think. The story Usagi tells is great.

Having read this folk story in a book it was fun to see Usagi's version as told for the orphan's. A stirring and heartfelt story meant to entertain and encourage the orphan's that there is always hope for something more to life. That they too can find family and grow up to becoming hero's of their own. It is great seeing Usagi interact with children and the common folk for it shows more depth of his character in that he is not just a simple Ronin going through life fighting and killing. That he seems to be a hero in all his warrior ways it is actually while being a "hero" in the simplest of ways: doing that which is nearly always hardest to do in being a good person, a good friend and a giver rather than a taker. In every endeavor Usagi shows that it is in the doing and giving for others which proves him a true hero!
