Published: September 1999 Synopsis: "'The Haunted Inn of Moon Shadow Hill' finds Usagi once again on the road when he seeks shelter for the night in an inn, the only haven in an area reputed to be haunted. He reluctantly accepts a wager to enter the local graveyard and comes face-to-face with more haunts than you can shake a (chop)stick at. This is an outrageous story full of many of the strange, and often wacky, monsters of Japanese folklore, drawn in Stan Sakai's charming and inimitable style." This was probably one of the funnest Usagi books out there. It starts with a bet from a pompous merchant and Usagi's fear over losing honor which leads him into a haunted forest at night. The inn keeper mentioned all the demons that lived there and Stan delivered the goods in a spectacular manner. That giant splash page with all the monsters must be one of the coolest single pages in Usagi. And although they turned out to be fakes it was still fun to see.

I too adore that double page splash with all those Japanese monsters. Has a very "Marvel" feel to it. Just a fun romp and can see this as being told around a campfire. Nice to see Usagi showing some fear and still he attempted to confront the fear with finally noticing that all the monsters were fake. His sense of humor stands out here as rather than becoming angry or being annoyed he helps "expand" the horror story while taking his winnings and gaining his "revenge" in return scaring the inn visitors which will bring even more people to town. His walking away telling the inn's owner what the girls want for breakfast makes for a cute ending.
