Published: May 2001 Synopsis: "Chizu's in trouble! It was inevitable that, as the tireless leader of the fearsome Neko Ninja Clan, she would eventually be embroiled in its dark politics. Chizu has often favored her clansmen over her master, Lord Hijiki, but they sure don't seem to appreciate it. Caught in a trap sprung by her own comrades, Chizu faces her most challenging task ever, to escape the stronghold of a new enemy -- those who were once her friends." Notes: Chizu is rejected by the Neko Ninja Clan and branded a renegade. Discuss the issue and/or post full reviews below!

With her machinations against Lord Hikiji it was only of time before Chizu lost control of the Neko ninja's and the end of that control was a fun story. I loved how the spilled tea was used as a marker.

Chizu is one of my favorite supporting characters, so an issue devoted to her out-fighting and out-smarting almost everyone would also be one of my favorites. There's that bit of serendipity where the one ninja who finds her is one loyal to her--that doesn't sit well with me and I'd have preferred Chizu making her escape fully on her own merits. And there are a few narration boxes at the very end that are unnecessary.
But those first few pages with her riding to the castle and then the tea spilled on her are great scene-setting and lull the reader with a deliberately slow pace. And when suffering from the effects of poison at the end, Chizu looks miserable. Her appearance shocked me. Great artwork.
Finally, Kagemaru is such an ass. I really enjoy hating that guy.

This was great. I sometime have problems with they way Chizu (and Tomoe) sometimes look, especially shocked or angry, they can look off. But just the ending of this comic was brilliant, I want to continue it, not follow onto a different story.

Chizu finally answers for being a leader who cares about more than just being a leader blindly following orders from the higher ups. Betrayed by Kagemaru with a confrontation with Lord Hijiki (who I still think looks odd without having any hands or feet) her fight to escape ending with her weakened and poisoned shows her courage and tenacity and that she never really was meant to be a cruel ninja boss. The art by Stan shines in this issue and I really like how he portrays Chizu once the poisoning has struck. You can feel and see her suffering and pain.

I've mentioned elsewhere that while it's true he wouldn't be as easily identified as a snake if he were more anthropomorphized like the other characters but at the same time it really makes him seem incongruous with the world, much like his master who is human.

Yes to Hebi, my oops. The lack of limbs just seems eerie and makes him stand out oddly in this world. At times though I can imagine how he came to power in "crushing" all of his foes who might stand in his way. Like spiders, I don't much care for snakes so I would most assuredly give Hebi a wide berth if ever seeing him around.
