 Published: February 2003 Synopsis: The rabbit ronin traveling party grows by one, as Usagi and his young companion Jotaro are joined on the road by a jovial old priest named Tomago. The good times soon turn sour as the trio encounter a merchant who has been marked for death and is trying to expose the crimes of a local gangster. Even a walk through the woods proves dangerous, but Usagi and company aren't about to leave an innocent man hanging out to dry. But while they agree to deliver the merchant to safety, the road ahead might be even more deadly than they realize! Notes: First appearance of Motojime ("handler"), not identified. Even though we saw a similar plot already with the assassin's clan I was taken in with this story as it didn't occur to doubt the bonzi until he repeated Chizu's trick from Grasscutter II. I'm usually good at spotting that kind of a plot so to be caught unaware was a fun experience.

Even though we saw a similar plot already with the assassin's clan I was taken in with this story as it didn't occur to doubt the bonzi until he repeated Chizu's trick from Grasscutter II. I'm usually good at spotting that kind of a plot so to be caught unaware was a fun experience. I'm fascinated by the recurrence of intuition in these stories. Tamago says he didn't try to kill Usagi because he felt the samurai's instincts were too strong. It's not a cop-out, either. We've seen that dairokkan many times. In fact, it came up in "The Chrysanthemum Pass" when Usagi first encountered Koroshi agents. So Tamago followed his own intuition not to challenge Usagi's intuition, and we the readers know he made right call. The issue summary says this is the first appearance if Koroshi. We've seen Koroshi before, so I think it might mean that Motojime first appears in this story, but not named. He also appears in "Remnants of the Dead" (which is what? Three years later?) where he is named. |

Koroshi definitely appear in v.3 #5 "The Chrysanthemum Pass", and I believe that is their first appearance. The medicine-dealer/assassin even yells "Koroshi!" when he attacks, which really does not seem like a best practice for assassination. |
