Oh, I didn't know that, ha. And they do go after ROM hosts... You can find a lot of interesting stuff on Internet Archive, that's why I love it. But there is a lot of shady stuff on there too like Roms and such
I don't care about Roms generally (I play them often), but considering that Internet Archive is a non-profit online library for everyone to use, that's where I draw the line because I'd like to see the site around for a good long while. It's also kind of a bad idea that they just kind of let people upload whatever they want without moderation
But I guess that goes back to the old Hacker idiom "Information wants to be free"
Also, what kind of rights is an old magazine that's been out of print for years infringing upon exactly?

Oh, I always had the impression the internet archiver was a pretty above-board and curated place. Not so? I hope they don't get themselves in trouble. That said, I see no moral issue preserving otherwise-defunct IP that there is no authorized way to buy. Now the nuances and ethics of copyright versus access to information is one of my favorite topics, and I could go off on a pretty wide tangent, so to preserve this thread I'll stop there. Except I will add that I am delighted there is now an official modern release of the classic TMNT games. I'm going to snag that at some point.

Forget the consoles and PC games, this is the real deal right here:

Played Warframe with our youngest boy last night now that Warframe has cross play. It was a hell of a time. Really had a blast. Called our oldest (in college) and he’s going to try and find time to hook up and play. But he’s got finals next week so I told him that was more important. But I really hope he gets some time to play. It’s been forever since I’ve played a co-op game with both boys. This is what being a parent is all about if you ask me.

The Midnight Suns game is really good, but it's got some serious technical problems. The game crashes during loading screens SOOO often and the loading screens are already really long. Assuming everything goes perfect after the first crash and you didn't lose any progress it'll still be 5 minutes just to restart the game and get through all the subsequent loading screens just to get to where you were when the game crashed, and if it keeps crashing at that loading screen you could waste hours just trying to advance to the next day or end a mission you've already beaten.

Love this:
Some games based on films were disappointing.
I had the Live and Let Die game for the Amstrad. I expected it might feature levels from the film, such as escaping crocodiles, fighting henchmen, etc. But it was simply the speedboat chase from the film, I don’t think there was anything beyond that.

A lot of early video games were absolute unmitigated trash even by the standards and limitations of their time.

My favorite video games are from the 90's and 2000's, and have the heaviest replay for me to this day.
But I've got huge nostalgia for the whole 80's, I can always find time still to play a quick round of Galaga or Xevious. If you can find a proper port of Ms. Pac-Man (at the right game speed, which many are not) or play the actual arcade machine, still a blast (though still fun playing the original Pac-Man as well).
Dig Dug, Pitfall, and I am DEFINITELY still down with Centipede and Millipede (great sequel). Stuff like Frogger and Tapper still make me smile as well. And you should hear about my 5 hour plus game of Defender sometime (no save files back then!)
Mid to late 80's was just killer with the rise of Nintendo, I can go back and play all 3 Mario games anytime, plus Zelda, Zelda II, Metroid, etc. 2-player Bubble Bobble is still a blast, Contra, plenty of others.
But agreed, TONS of bad ones as well. I think that exists in every era though, hence the term "shovelware".

Yep, there were some absolute gems from most eras, but a lot of crap, too. I've found that the cumulative iterations on quality of life features have made some games that were good for their times not feel good anymore.
Old school arcade classics and the best NES games still hold up very well, though. I'd love to have a Ms. Pac-Man machine as long as the fast movement speed hack is applied.

I was recently watching a lets-play of one of my favorite games from my childhood, Elroy Hits The Pavement. It's a really fun and visually striking Edutainment game

I like to go back and play some of my old favorites. But I find more and more, outside of VR I have no interest in that, I enjoy newer games more. Like the 90's forward. If I am going to back and play something I'd rather play Metroid Prime more than Metroid. Or Symphony of the Night over the original Castlevania games. However I do like that a lot of independent developers are making games in the vein of a lot of those great old side scrollers. I can only play so many shooters before the concept gets old and you need something different. And since I don't do sports, mostly that's left with AAA games is shooters, smash em up (like God of War) and free roam. Which sometimes the last two can be one in the same.

Yeah, I've recently come to realize I really enjoy games that have a retro look and vibe, but most of the time I prefer one that looks retro over one that is retro. I'm too spoiled by modern polish and creature comforts. I like save states, I like checkpoints, I like autosaves, I like maps and when games give at least some indication of where to go or what to do. I like the more refined control schemes.
Perfect recent example. I loved The Messenger. On the surface, it's an indie Ninja Gaiden clone, but if you dive in, it's a very polished game that pays homage the 8-bit and 16-bit eras without feeling like a punishing slog. The first half is more Ninja Gaiden-esque and second half is Metroidvania. The art style is very much based on NES and SNES games, but without the technical limitations of those systems, so there are massive characters and set pieces. I would much rather play this than the actual original Ninja Gaiden, Metroid or Castlevania games.
That said, the Zelda and Mario games hold up really well, and if you play on the Virtual Consoles you get save states, so it's the best of both worlds. But these days, there are very few games from those eras I enjoy playing today.
