On the 3D graphic era of PS1/N64, the games were fairly impressive at the time in the quality of the game but not so much the graphics. I remember Body Harvest, which had near intelligible graphics. But unlike, say OoT or MM, it was a literal free roam. Something, as far as my knowledge, was a fairly untouched concept at the time. And it was a fun, engaging game. Probably something along the lines of early Monster Hunter. I think the developers took the time to make good games, and had to rely on replay value and the story/plot as the graphics were limited. I was completely blown away by OoT at the time. I took two vacation days from work when it came out just to play it. I have tried multiple time in the present to play it again and just can't get past how bad the graphics are now. (Why do we get all these remasters on games that don't need them when we got an entire era that does need them?)
For N64, anyway I think that is what they tried to do. And in my opinion for the most part succeeded. But like we all say with certain eras of comics; they are a product of their time. But N64/PS1 hit at a time I was working full time, still living with my folks, and only having to paying off a used car so I had lots of income. I remember how good games like Extreme G, Wave Race, Clay Fighter, Donkey Kong and F-Zero were. I also remember how awful the Castlevania games were due to the limitations of the console. And then of course how popular Goldeneye got and we all know how terrible that looked but it gained more popularity more than even Mario 64 I'd wager.
Thankfully with PS1 I focused a lot on turn based RPGs,2D fighers and side scrollers. I rarely owned many of the 3D style games. I did have Alien Trilogy and some castle exploring/beat em up game that was fairly good with the graphics. But the RPGs,fighters and side scrollers looked like amazing versions of SNES games. These types of games seemed greatly improved in almost every aspect and there was a lot of them on the PS1. So there was so much on PS1 to explore if you felt the 3D were a little too messy. For me it was an era of self indulgence because I was in a financial position to do so and 99% of what I own on PS1 I've played since then. Can't say so much for N64, where mostly the racing games are the only thing I have come back to and still enjoyed.

There is definitely a difference in how things from that era were received at the time versus now with hindsight. It's just the nature of the beast with how rapidly gaming technology progressed.
PS1 to PS2 was a FAR greater leap in fidelity than PS2 to PS3, PS3 to PS4, etc. I feel like most people now could play a game from PS3-forward and the graphics would not really stand out as too dated.

Definitely. I don't get developers remaster a PS3 game for the PS4 or PS5. The graphics and sound are usually fine. I remember when they ported Castlevania: SOTN on the 360/PS3 and I wasn't really impressed at the remastered graphics over the original other than it look a bit smoother and not pixilated as bad but really not that big a deal. I would have never stopped playing my PS1 disc because of the graphics because the game is badass.
Now you want to port the N64 Castlevania games on a new console as remastered so they are actually playable games? Shut up and take my money!

Don't get me wrong. I don't mind upgrades of PS3 games. They can be nice and pretty, sure, but I also don't think they need to be $60 full price games, either, unless it's a total rebuild and reimagining like the Resident Evil 2 Remake which was basically a new game based on the original. Honestly, I wish they had included actual remasters of the originals with the remakes.

I didn't start playing RE until 4 on the Wii. So I have actually been contemplating playing some of the early game remakes as I can do the tank controls and camera angles of the early RE games. They were unplayable to me. And I have especially heard the praise for RE2 Remake more than any of the others. So I may start with that one.
But now with cross play my youngest son is getting back into it now that we can play together so most of my gaming downtime is dedicated to playing Warframe.

Decided to pick back up Burnout 3: Takedown
Man, I forgot what a fun game this is! Though while I'm not particularly good at the Crash missions, the racing is very fun and incredibly frantic. I'm up to the Super series races and it's getting to the point where I don't use boost unless I absolutely need to to catch back up. Accidentally ramming into the back end of a civilian vehicle and put you pretty behind fairly quickly

I was today years old when I learned there was a second part of the title to Bad Dudes. Also, that was a fun game at the time.

While I've always been much more of a console gamer, I finally broke down and bought an inexpensive gaming laptop because I wanted to play some old titles on Steam. It's been a blast so far, a few of my favorites:
1) Ms. Pac-Man...I guess this game is having some legal challenges and is getting pulled from the various Pac-Man collections, but not only can you get a standalone version on Steam, it's the right game speed version! This is the version I've been looking for forever, I'm loving it.
2) Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire...I played the fool out of this on the Nintendo 64, but it didn't have the cut scenes and character audio of the PC version due to size limitations. The Steam version is the PC version with all that, and it's been so cool to play.
3) Hexen...another one I played on the Nintendo 64, not the best game in the world but definitely some nostalgia. The Steam version itself was pretty rugged looking in terms of the graphics, and would not recognize a controller. But there's a really active mod community for the Doom engine games including Hexen, and I was able to do the mod that massively enhances the graphics and lets me play with an Xbox controller, it's now a completely different experience. Game seriously looks and plays fantastic like never before.
Planning on downloading Age of Empires II next.

This is the version I've been looking for forever, I'm loving it. Ms. Pac-Man has a very complicated history. Started off as a rom hack that was sold to Midway under some sort of licensing agreement per cabinet that Namco wasn't made aware of until much much later. The following video kind of goes in depth on it, if you want to know more

Saw this on a retro site earlier, I hadn’t heard of it until now: You mean the Duck Hunt game itself?
