The trailer has become almost an artform unto itself now. I think the trailer to 300 was one of the best short films I've ever seen.
The downside to this is of course that the full-length film often doesn't live up to the promise of a really well-edited trailer - 300 being a prime example.
And there are other movies where I've like the trailer but, as adam_warlock_2099 said, once I've seen it I wonder if there's any point in sitting through the whole movie now that I've seen all the good parts. Comedies are especially prone to elicit this reaction from me - I feel like I've seen all the jokes already, so why watch the movie?
The Avengers 2 trailer is pretty good - looks like it'll be fun but doesn't give too much away. I think Ultron looks all right - he's had multiple different looks and designs in the comics, right from the start. Not sure about the voice - some bits sounded really good, others a bit weak. Still don't like the actors for Black Widow and Hawkeye much, though don't dislike them to the extent that they'd spoil the movie for me. Scarlet Witch was given a very generically "cool" entry - hope that's not indicative of the rest of that character's filmtime.

The only thing Marvel Movies can't do with Wanda and Pietro is mention them as the children of Magneto. I don't think they can call them mutants either. They can call them mutants, there is no trademark or rights involved. They have chosen a different origin, but probably to avoid the consequences of introducing mutants into the cinematic universe.

Finally saw Days of Future Past. Don't know if I just wasn't in the mood or what, but didn't care for it at all.

It wasn't quite the John Carter movie I expected, but it was fun! I still feel it suffered from an unexplained early dogpiling by critics who had previously liked movies that weren't particularly better (and many that were decidedly inferior). It was a solid B to me; nowhere near the C or D mark that critics gave it. The only things I would have changed are the title (I would really have kept the name "'Mars" somewhere in it, be it "Princess of Mars", "Warlord of Mars" or "The adventures of John Carter, gentleman from Virginia, on the planet Mars") and the opening sequence. I would have skipped the intro on Barsoom and just started with Carter on the frontier, letting the audience discover Mars at the same time as the hero.

As I said before when we've talked about it, I went with a group of sci-fi and (tabletop) gaming fans, none of whom were familiar with John Carter before the film was announced and a couple had read a Princess of Mars in preparation to see what it was about. We saw it opening weekend before the dogpile reviews got out there too much. To a person, they all loathed it and half wanted to walk out halfway through. I was told point blank if they ever made a sequel and I tried to take them to see it they would never speak to me again. This is a group that could forgive the Star Wars prequels and loved the Marvel and DC movies, and who had sons coming of an age to play with boys toys-i.e. the exact market Disney wanted to target with this movie- and their reaction was-there's 2+ hours of my life I will never have back. For me, it was disappointing but not completely terrible, but it did not hit with the very audience who should have embraced that movie. It went beyond the naming and marketing of the movie, and down tot he direction and decisions at the level of the producers/exec. producers about tone and tenor and how they wanted to present the film. I don't think they really understood the material they were adapting and what made it work and appeal for a century among the sci-fi crowd, and chose the wrong elements to emphasize and focus on, missing the forest for all the trees they chose to use for their tentpoles. -M

Deadline and other sources are reporting Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as Dr.Strange and final negotiations as to contract are underway. I will believe it when the contracts are signed as final negotiations were what kept a few other reportedly cast actors from the role...

I am quite surprised! The co-workers who saw it here (those who bothered to go after seeing how much critics panned it) thought it was much better than they expected. One of them, a guy who usually doesn't go for fantasy movies (and who really hated Avengers, something we had loud arguments about) thought it was the best genre movie he had seen in years! I wouldn't go that far myself, but thought John carter was better than the average SF and fantasy film from the last decade. Seeing film critics pan John Carter but praise the last few Harry Potter caused a severe logical error in my hapless brain!

I was really surprised to see the overwhelming negativity that was piled on this movie, especially considering the praise heaped on Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel. The John Carter movies, while no classic, was much better than either of those.

Oh, definitely; my least favorite part of the film is that they tried to cast Carter in the same mold as typical genre heroes: a tragedy in his past, wanting to atone, not caring about others at first and then sacrificing himself and blahblahblah… all too formulaic. The gentleman of Virginia aspect was pretty much dropped, apart from the "yes ma'am" line.

Avengers 2 trailer was awesome! I am predicting it to be the best superhero movie to date. James Spader's voice is fantastic and he just beings an evil intelligence to Ultron that he needs to have. I am interested to see how they tie in Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. There are some definite hints to a divide in the Avengers team, likely leading to a Civil War story. I think this could work better on the big screen than it was in the comics but I am not sure how they can expect to add some key players (like Spider-Man) when they dont have the rights.
