Despite my nostalgic love of several series listed here (All-Star Squadron, Avengers, Invaders) and perhaps because of my ignorance of Conan comics, I think I have to go with the Avengers. That run of comics has continued to have influence and has been referenced over and over in comics and movies.

I voted Conan. Other people have written Avengers well, but no one in the 20th century "got" Conan like Roy (and REH of course). The X-Men run with Neal Adams is a sentimental favorite - those comics blew me away when they came out. I accept that Conan is going to lead this poll , and I'm okay with it but I just never "got " the thrill reading Conan's book. I appreciated the artwork by Smith , and of course, Buscema is a master but it felt like the same story over and over again.

I mean, obviously this is true of any and all genre fiction, but I don't think it's MORE true of Conan than Spider-man or something. That said, I never really jumped with both feet into Sword and Sorcery* - It's my biggest non-humor weak spot in post Silver Age Comics. I really, realllly liked the first dozen issues of Conan, though. And I think this was John Buscema's best work, just 'cause he didn't think the material was stupid. (Or at least not AS stupid as superheroes!) * Except for Ditko's Slayer, the Atlas/Seabord Stuff, and Cerebus if that counts.

hey guys, new to the forum...and admittedly know nothing about comics. But my mother works with Roy Thomas and his wife, and I get signed things from him a lot. Funny emails too. So he mentioned to me about an upcoming Alter Ego mag that will be coming out next year that I might be interested in...not sure if he'll give me a copy or not, so curious...where do I buy these things?
TIA

TIA Comic book shops will have Alter Ego, and you can order them from the publisher, Twomorrows (which is where I get my copies, mostly in PDF format nowadays). Back issues can also be found on the website the publisher, and they're must-read material for fans of old comics! Welcome to the boards, by the way.

TIA I don't think we've ever had someone join the forum before with neither any knowledge of comics nor a collection they are looking to appraise/sell. This is truly a first. Welcome aboard, and don't hesitate to ask more questions. We're glad to have you

I would rate Thomas as one of the top 5 writers of all time.

I never read comic books growing up, but now I have a son who has taken to them a bit, then this whole Roy Thomas connection made it's way into the house so he's gotten more interested. Very cool to see those little brains at work. Anyways, I suppose I should vote so as to not hijack the thread...as soon as I learn more about what he's actually written I'll give my more educated vote

Hey knownocomics ! Welcome to the CCF boards !
Roy has done so much over the years, and I love his Alter Ego fanzine.
I wonder what character or title he's worked on he's most proud of ?

TIA Welcome aboard, Tia! I also work for Roy, as a writer for Alter Ego. He has always been one of my favorite comics writers. I voted for Conan in the poll but I'm also very fond of his Avengers, Dr. Strange, Sub-Mariner, All-Star Squadron, and Infinity Inc. runs. I hope you enjoy it here at CCF and decide to stick around. Your point of view should give all of us jaded fanboys some fresh perspective. Kurt Mitchell, also known around these parts as Cei-U!

Hey knownocomics ! Welcome to the CCF boards ! Roy has done so much over the years, and I love his Alter Ego fanzine. I wonder what character or title he's worked on he's most proud of ? I do recall an interview where Roy talked about how All-Star Squadron was a labour of love for him, and how the JSA in All Star Comics had been his first love in comics. He had originally been told that he would be allowed doing ASS as it was after the Crisis, with the stories being set pre-Crisis, and was quite upset when DC changed its mind and forced him to adapt the post-Crisis continuity. I don't know if that makes it his favourite, but he was certainly very fond of it.

My guesses included All-Star Squadron or Conan, both of which would be my favorites, in that order.
