Any other fans of Ghost In The Shell? The live-action movie starring Scarlett Johansson comes out next year, March 2017. First look at ScarJo in the movie: First Look at Ghost In The ShellI am hoping this movie will be decent because I'd like to see more live-action anime adaptions come out of Hollywood.

Loved the original anime movie when it came out. Very Blade Runner-esque Hopefully they don't screw this up.

Wow, that looks impressive.
Cyberpunk isn't one of my usual favorite genres but for some reason, I'm simply enthralled by this anime, especially the Stand Alone Complex series and it's sequels. Plus, after seeing ScarJo in Lucy, I think she can handle the metaphysical side of this story.
Looking forward to this.

I mean, I know they are robot bodies so they don't necessarily need to be asian...but at the same time why not cast an asian actress?

That's upsetting. Glad the test was rejected. I can't support a movie that will use CGI to make people look a certain race after the fact. No way.

Whoh! I didn't know that. I'm looking forward to seeing The Major and Bato in this film. Also, I hope there are CGI Tatchikomas in the film. That would be great. I loved the Stand Alone Complex series.

I saw it this weekend and while it isn't a patch on the original, or even necessary, it surpassed my expectations and I thought they did a good job of it. 7/10

Saw the anime way years back and am going to see this to support it.
Sad that's it crashing so hard. Pretty sure most of it is because of the "whitewashing" in casting.
Please, someone explain that it's A. ScarJo is gorgeous and a proven commodity and B. not a slight to Asians

According to IMDb trivia, Masamune Shirow himself said he could not see a Japanese woman in the role (though I don't know why) and thought Scarlett was a great choice.
There are some Asians in the cast. Noted director and occasional actor "Beat" Takeshi Kitano plays Chief Aramaki.
Personally I think she did a fine job as the Major.

This finally dropped onto pay-per-view so watched it the other night.
I will say, having some knowledge of the franchise (whether from the original anime film or any of it's successors) would be helpful here. I'm not too sure how receptive it may be for those who may come into this cold.
That being said, I quite enjoyed it, thought it was a great adaption. The effects were amazing from the cybernetics to Newport City itself. The colors of this film were amazing. The story itself, while mostly original, was decent. But I thoroughly loved how they lifted certain scenes whole and shots from the original anime film, gorgeous detail in doing so. Even how they used pieces of the original anime's soundtrack. I also loved the little details they kept of the characters (Batou's love of dogs, Togusawa's use of a revolver, etc).
As for the cast, I thought they did rather well. Had no problem with Scarlet's performance and frankly, 'Beat' Takeski was an inspired choice for Aramaki. (I've seen some of his other work and he does silent, menacing and deadly very well). The whole 'whitewashing' controversy had some merit but watching the actual results, I didn't really see any effects of it. There were quite a few ethnicity on display here, from Caucasian to Asian to African-American, in fact, a rather unique blending of styles and subtle hints of cultures.
I think it's a niche film though in that, if you are a fan of the franchise, it's definitely worth seeing.
