A local bookstore runs a monthly graphic novel discussion group, and I decided to make an anthology sampler from my collection to give away to people. My rules were that the stories had to be shorter than a standard comic story, and they had to be no more than TV-14 equivalent rated. Here's what I came up with:
COPPERFIELDS Comix & Stories #1
1. Will Eisner, The Spirit, “Ten Minutes,” September 1949 [There are so many different kinds of Spirit stories, it was hard to choose just one; rather than an episode featuring one of his various femme fatales, I chose a story of another kind for which the strip is known: a human interest tale in which the title character barely appears]
2. Charles Biro, Daredevil & the Little Wise Guys, “A Rat,” from Daredevil #52
3. Gilbert Shelton, “Wonder Warthog Goes On Welfare,” from Rip Off Comix #1
4. Jamie Hernandez, “Jerusalem Crickets,” from Love & Rockets V1#21
5. Matt Howarth, The Bulldaggers, “The Snow Gods” and “The Children’s Hour,” from Heavy Metal February 1980
6. P. Craig Russell, “Siegfried & the Dragon,” from Epic Illustrated #2
7. Eddie Campbell, Bacchus, “The Book-Keeper from Atlantis,” from Deadface: Doing the Islands with Bacchus #2 [Exposition-heavy, but does give a sense of the character; other stories in the series range from myth-based horror to Kirby-pastiched superhero battles]
8. Neil Gaiman & Nigel Kitching, The Light Brigade, “The Path of the Just,” from Trident #1
9. Mike Collins & Alan Moore, Moonstone, “Tomorrow’s Truths Part 3,” from Fantasy Advertiser #77
10. Sam Hamm, Watchmen, “Liberty Island,” from The Watchmen Screenplay
11. David H. Jones, “V for Witherbladder” from Scan #37
COPPERFIELDS Comix & Stories #2
1. Charles Biro, Daredevil, from Daredevil #28
2. Grant Morrison & John Ridgeway, “The Liberators” from Warrior #26
3. Evan Dorkin, “Shot on Goal” from The Bummer Trilogy
4. Parkin & Varty, “Art School Heroine” from Knockabout Comix #1
5. Eddie Campbell, “Georgette,” from Prime Cuts #1, Flick #5 [By the creator of the Bacchus comic; this short is done in the style of one of his best works, the autobiographical Graffiti Kitchen]
6. Dori Seda, “Laundry Day Delight,” “How Cops Pick Up Girls,” “The Confidante,” “Retirement Village,” from Dori Stories
7. Harvey Pekar & Robert Crumb, “Hustlin’ Sides,” from American Splendor #2 [Pekar is one of the originators of the autobiographical comic genre; Crumb is the most prominent artist from the 60’s underground scene]
8. Kyle Baker, “Al Space,” from Epic Lite [Al Space is a minor character in Baker’s The Cowboy Wally Show]
9. Sherrie Flenniken, Thelma Ironthighs from Destroyer Duck #1
10. Phil Foglio, “Winslow,” from MythAdventures #5
11. Bob Wood, The Claw, from Daredevil #28
12. William Messner-Loebs, “Wolverine McAllister,” from Journey
13. Paul Grist, “The Unseen Jimmy Olsen” from Comics Forum #6
14. Jules Feiffer, “Superman,” reprinted in Passionella & Other Stories
15. Kim Newman, “Ubermensch”
