Author Nathan Madison is a contributor to the excellent magazine about pulps, Blood ’n’ Thunder, the encyclopedic series Comics Through Time and the online Pulp Magazines Project. Examining popular literature (primarily pulp magazines and comic books) of the 1920s to 1960, Madison reveals that the stories therein drew their definitions of heroism and villainy from an overarching, nativist fear of outsiders that had existed before World War I... This topic is just up my alley. Went to the link you provided and ordered--thanks!

THE ART OF ALEX NIÑO Deluxe Edited by Manuel Auad. Signed & numbered, 500! This is the softcover edition accompanied by a extra-illustrated bookplate, signed by Alex and numbered from 500. Dynamic visual storytelling and breathtaking design! In the 1970s Niño hit the American comics scene and this collection of his work shows why he is so highly regarded. His works range from the ultra real to the profoundly surreal. This includes unpublished pen/ink/brush drawings, comic book covers from the Philippines, comic book pages, a 20-page color graphic novel called "Tap-Dancing on a Tender Cerebellum," and a color gallery of mixed media paintings. His work often has a psychedelic feel, though he has claimed he's never delved into drugs; he has an imagination on par with Moebius or Berni Wrightson. Jim Steranko offers a glowing opinion of Alex's work: "The Filipino Invasion of the early 1970s visually transformed American comics with an infusion of high-quality craftsmanship and unbridled enthusiasm. Alex Niño emerged as one of the spearhead figures of the movement...{his art] ranging from the ultra real to the profoundly surreal..." CONAN RED NAILS ORIGINAL ART ARCHIVES Volume 1 By Robert E. Howard. Adapted by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith. For the first time, presented in the size of the original art, this oversize hardbound edition faithfully captures the appearance of the actual pages as drawn in 1973 and allows you to view each page individually as it should be seen. Captures every detail of this 58-page story, amazing and quintessential work by the young Barry Windsor-Smith as he was pouring his soul into these adaptations of Howard's finest stories. This is essentially an Artist Edition, in the same format as that fine series coming from publisher IDW. But this is from a new independent company that plans more books in this series. Scanned entirely from the original art. This story first appeared in Marvel's Savage Tales #2-3, 1973-74, and is licensed here from present owner Dark Horse. George Perez provides an Appreciation, and original writer Roy Thomas provides a new Introduction. It is absolutely amazing that this entire story has remained intact so as to be able to create this project, since so much artwork like this is long broken up and sometimes lost. Reproduction is second to none and it is just like holding the original artwork in your hands. Very well done. Publisher: Conan Properties, 2013 Binding: Hardcover without dustjacket Dimensions: 14x19 Pages: 132pg Color: PC Published at $200.00 On Sale! Save $50! Your price: $150.00

DR. SEUSS THE CAT BEHIND THE HAT By Caroline M. Smith. The Art of Dr. Seuss This is an entirely new, beautifully illustrated book that redefines Dr. Seuss as an iconic American artist. This comprehensive look at the breadth of art that Theodor Geisel created over his lifetime is an eye-opening peek behind the public persona into the real story of the man who was Dr. Seuss. This volume exuberantly juxtaposes Geisel’s "Midnight Paintings" with his best-loved children’s books because this was how Dr. Seuss constructed his creative life - his days devoted to literature for children, his nights to letting his mind and palette wander to even stranger shores. Inevitably, Geisel created images in his private artworks that would find their way into his literary projects. Though he fiercely protected his "Secret Art" from criticism during his lifetime, his intention all along was for these works to be seen when he was gone. It is downright absurd to make an art book on Dr. Seuss that attempts a straight chronology on the life and work of this multi-talented author, illustrator, painter, sculptor, political cartoonist, adman, doodler, practical joker, and Cat Behind the Hat. Therefore, this book is "chronological-ish." That is to say, some things come at the right time and some at the wrong time. But just as Dr. Seuss taught us to look at life "through the wrong end of a telescope," the iconic artwork packed into these pages helps us understand that it isn’t always a straight line from here to there that matters . . . But rather the fun of the journey that really counts. Meh, unless they sync our accounts this is worse. How is this worse ? I'd like the accounts to be synced, but they're different formats, so I don't think it's going to happen. Dark Horse has lots of great stuff, and I'm glad they'll get more exposure and sales this way on Comixology. I'm used to getting comics from both sites, and I'll still support DH on their site. I did pick up some Dynamite today, but they've been on both sites for a while now. Sad to see Bongo leaving Comixology. I highly doubt I'll get any Simpsons comics later because I don't think of them and won't be going to their dedicated website.
