FIRE & WATER: BILL EVERETT, THE SUB-MARINER & THE BIRTH OF MARVEL COMICS By Blake Bell. Highly Recommended Immerse yourself in the strange and fascinating world of Bill Everett. This captivating and informative work was produced in complete cooperation of the Everett family. It features the definitive biography of the man and his career, and how his personality informed his signature character The Sub-Mariner. The main focus, however, is the stunning display of artwork that few artists can match in breadth and quality. From the superhero and horror genre, to the wild west, romance, crime and suspense, Everett was a master of the medium. His Sub-Mariner stories, from the first in 1940 to the revivals in 1954 and again in the 1960s, remain some of the finest drawn comics ever. He co-wrote and drew the very first Daredevil issue for Marvel in 1963. He had a long career with Atlas in the 1950s, doing dozens of their best covers and best-drawn stories on fabled titles like Journey Into Mystery, Strange Tales, Venus, Journey Into Unknown Worlds, Marvel Tales and Adventures into Terror. This is packed with great artwork from throughout his career. But it also includes some wonderful early work from the original artwork, as well as previously unpublished Golden Age-era drawings, from the Sub-Mariner to family Christmas cards! Bell is a noted authority on both Steve Ditko and Bill Everett. He's authored and edited several books and Archives collections on each. Note: May have some slight scuffing to the dust jacket. Publisher: Fantagraphics, 2010 Binding: Hardcover with dustjacket Dimensions: 9x12 Pages: 216pg Color: Full Color throughout ISBN: #9781606991664 Published at $39.99 On Sale! Save $20! ANTI-FOREIGN IMAGERY in American Pulps and Comic Books By Nathan Vernon Madison. 1920-60. Author Nathan Madison is a contributor to the excellent magazine about pulps, Blood ’n’ Thunder, the encyclopedic series Comics Through Time and the online Pulp Magazines Project. Examining popular literature (primarily pulp magazines and comic books) of the 1920s to 1960, Madison reveals that the stories therein drew their definitions of heroism and villainy from an overarching, nativist fear of outsiders that had existed before World War I. But this actually intensified afterwards. These depictions were transferred to America’s "new" enemies, both following U.S. entry into the Second World War and during the early stages of the Cold War. Anti-foreign narratives showed a growing emphasis on ideological, as opposed to racial or ethnic, differences. The process of change in America’s sentiments, so virulent after the First World War, are revealed by the popular, inexpensive escapism of the time, pulp magazines and comic books. From comics he offers examples from Superman, Batman, Capt. Marvel, Joe Yank, and Marvel's The Yellow Claw (by Jack Kirby and John Severin), plus the very rare Anarcho: Dictator of Death, and How Stalin Hopes We Will Destroy America--all accompanied with illustrations. There are more examples from early 1940s comics like Fight, Daredevil, Headline and the scarce United States Marines with it's highly prized Hitler and Tojo covers. The story actually begins the the pages of Dime Novels before and after 1900, well-covered in the introduction. Then we jump into "The Yellow Peril-American Pulps Between the World Wars, 1919-1935," and then into the over-the-top period in both pulps and comics from 1935-45, and ultimately into the Cold War years. Well-illustrated with striking pulp covers. Publisher: McFarland, 2012 Binding: Softcover Dimensions: 6x9 Pages: 234pg Color: text/b&w ISBN: #9780786470952 Published at $40.00 On Sale! Save $20!
