I like Matt's points; he offers some perspective that is desperately needed in the current foray, but he probably didn't need to write this in the second person as if we are automatically the "haters" he describes so negatively who he assumes cannot accept change. By that rationale, why try to convince us at all?

This is the 2nd of back-to-back editorials on the comics cube about the recent news of switching characters genders or races. This one was mild compared to Monday's where the writer called he those opposed to the concept ignorent and racist, made him ashamed of comics fandom and basically asked those with negative views to shut up and only express positive views.
Personally, I don't care any longer since I don't purchase or read Marvel or DC any more.I do however understand someone who does, has been invested in these characters for a long, long time and loves them the way they are. He/She is now asked to support some year-long or more absence of what they liked. Not just a storyline and change of pace-something that will go on indefinitly. I can understand that frustration. It's a legitimate gripe. Monday's editorial came off as an attempt to shut down discussion by shaming people as rascist. Tuesday's just called them haters. I would think the conversation can be had without the namecalling or wishes to censor dissent.

I don't have a problem with someone else taking over a hero's identity, aside from the diversity component, its not exactly a new phenomenon in comics. Its important to me that creative team is onboard with it (hopefully initiating the idea themselves with editorial agreeing that it sounds OK) rather than just being an editorial mandate. If Jason Aaron thinks he has some great stories he can tell with a female Thor, then go for it!
Of course, most likely the characters will revert back to the originals fairly quickly, but maybe not. The "ultimate" Nick Fury has stuck around and managed to pop up in 616, Bucky took over for Cap for longer than I expected, Jean Grey & Norman Osborn & Barry Allen were gone for quite a long time, etc. I can understand someone attached to Steve Rogers being put out a little bit, but that's what "classic comics" are for.. at least until Steve returns. I would hope most fans would give the new characters a shot though. Labeling such readers as a group as haters or, even worse, sexists/racists is not conducive to civil discussion. Not to say there aren't individuals who don't fall into those categories, but its not helpful to lump everyone together.
To me, the bigger issue is editorial mandates like "No marriage anymore for any of our characters" and "this issue must cross over with event X" that tend to disrupt the flow of a writer's run on a title.

The one on Monday clearly states, "(if the following words don’t apply to you, then don’t take offense)". It was a commentary on racist and sexist comments. If you weren't making racist and sexist comments, it doesn't apply to you. If you were, and there is no shortage of fans who were doing so on social media (one particular colorist was outlining the sexist and racist comments she'd been reading on my timeline), that's who it was aimed at.
It also flat-out states, "I understand the trepidation that can come with a favorite character being altered from the version that made you a fan of them in the first place," noting that yes, it is an understandable gripe.
Matt just wants people to calm down, noting that there is no shortage of fans who will rage at anything. He even wrote that last week and only got it to me yesterday, hence no mention of Falcon as Captain America. He's talking to haters, the irrational people. If you think you're a rational person, then it doesn't apply to you.
And if you don't think there are sexists and racists out there making their voices heard, then I say good for you for avoiding comments sections. I am, in American terms, a minority. I've been exposed to blatant racism, both here and the five years I spent in America. Reading comments sections in the past week has been enough to make me bristle. And I don't invite racists and sexists over for "discussion." Bigotry is wrong. There is no discussion to be had.

He even wrote that last week and only got it to me yesterday, hence no mention of Falcon as Captain America. He's talking to haters, the irrational people. If you think you're a rational person, then it doesn't apply to you. Thus my respectful suggestion that the second person point of view may not have been the best choice. Calling the reader a "hater" is inevitably going to lead readers to believe Matt feels they are haters. Clearly, that was not his intent. I don't think anyone here has said that. I don't think anyone here is debating that either.
