I have mixed feelings. As a writer, I generally enjoy Johns' work. His run on the main Superman book was the first time since the New 52 started that it was halfway decent. As an executive, the line has gone from passable, to bad, to worse to the tune of three reboots in five years while under his watch. I can't see him being the guy who's going to right the ship in regard to the movies, but hell, it can't get any worse.

I'd be okay with that. At least then we'd actually be getting a Martian Manhunter.

So there's an obvious comparison to be made between the box office and critical reception of Captain America: Civil War and Batman V Superman. I'm not necessarily for or against either studio -- ideally, I'd like both to be putting out quality films that I can get behind, the same way I feel about their respective publishing arms. But the recent success of Civil War just makes Warner look like they don't know what they're doing. Out only two weeks, and with the exception of Spider-Man, starring historically B-list superheroes (which Marvel has now made A-list through nailing their execution on film), and Civil War has easily blown past the ticket sales of Batman V Superman's entire two month run. Never mind that critics seem to generally love it. Never mind that Warner's film stars their three most iconic, most A-list of A-list characters ever, along with cameos of the rest of their usual headlining characters.

Geoff "Let's kill everyone's parents and make them angsty" Johns is going to put the fun into DC movies?
Alrighty!

My reaction too - if Geoff Johns is the answer to their film slate, they're not asking the right question.

Can't they just hire...ya know...actual filmmakers?
There are directors with different visions than Zack Snyder. Crazy thought...I know.

Apparently, Johns won't be writing anything in the foreseeable future as a result of taking this new position. According to an article on Bleeding Cool, Diane Nelson had already limited him to two books per month as anything more would have impeded his CCO duties. Stepping away completely was supposedly done of his own accord, though.

Which means the writer owning the title of "My Favorite Writer Working on DC Rebirth" is......
Dan Jurgens.
