Magic the Gathering !
I guess now the have a board game, and their first expansion to that board game. My brother and I both considered playing it but the reviews came back a little on the weak side.
Has anyone here played it ?
My son and I regularly play Magic the Gathering Online, as I'm in Oklahoma and he's in Nebraska. We play "pauper"-style, where we only play with common cards. It keeps the cost down and we've had a blast with it.
My wife and her side of the family play no games except dominos.
My side plays games, but part of that was growing up in a household of 9. We used to play D&D, but board games we play include Ticket to Ride, Dominion, The Bottom Line, Personally Incorrect, and Mid-Life Crisis.

Chess is a great game, but my wife is not much competition for me (which she would readily admit to), so I rarely get to play. Cap, you two might want to give Othello (Reversi) a try. I used to play it against a fellow who was a Master-level chess player. I was no competition for him in chess, but in Othello we were evenly matched.

I find the anti-Monoploy, chess and checkers bias of this thread disturbing. I loved those games too ... Especially Checkers!

I think my parents still have our old Othello game from when I was growing up. Next time I'm over there, I really should dig into the closet where it would be and see if it is still there. Thanks for the reminder about that game! I hadn't thought of it in years.

If I do, could I PM you with my screen name for there so maybe we could hook up and play some time (obviously, I don't want to cut into any time you might be doing that with your son, but if you have any extra time)? I'm only looking at Pauper and maybe building one cut-rate Commander deck as well.

Chess and checkers I can get behind. Monopoly, no thanks. Bleah.
I also play Magic: the Gathering. Pretty much casual Commander only. Not really interested in other formats at this point.

Do you play MTG online, paper, or both? Pretty much just paper. I do have an online account, but I've only logged in a couple times in the last four years or so. There are quite a few shops in my area that host commander nights; the place I usually play has commander on both Thursday and Saturday nights, so that's where I usually go. The power levels of the decks in my play group have definitely been creeping up over the past year, which I am not a fan of - makes it more combo-y and less fun for me. But it's still mostly casual other than a few people who play more competitive decks. My favorite commander is Daxos of Meletis.

I find the anti-Monoploy, chess and checkers bias of this thread disturbing. It's not a bias, i's just another category of games, no judgments. Just not the ones I'm interested in talking about here. You are easily disturbed my friend

We're a big Settlers of Catan household. Now that's an amazing game! I really don't get the love for monopoly unless it's nostalgia. It's a 99% decided by luck with dices, no strategy...

I play board games regularly with a couple of meetup groups. Some favorites off the top of my head are 7 Wonders, Mysterium, Innovation, Sentinels of the Multiverse, Betrayal at the House on the Hill, Last Night on Earth, Touch of Evil, Arkham Horror, One Night Ultimate Werewolf... 7 wonders is really really good! Now that's a heck of a lot of ones I don't know! Could you present Mysterium, Innovation, Sentinels, Betrayl, Last Night on Ear, Touch of Evil and one Night UW, when you get the chance?

But it's still mostly casual other than a few people who play more competitive decks. My favorite commander is Daxos of Meletis. That's cool. I've been in and out of the game so many times, I can't count them all. The last time I played paper regularly was Kamigawa block, although I did try to get back into it with the first Zendikar block but found that I didn't like the people at the store nearest my house, so I took up the game online. That lasted for a while, until the middle of the second Ravnica block, when my duties as a father and husband were taking up the time that I used to use playing. I sold my entire online collection and used the money to buy five of the last six Captain America books I needed (it was worth well more than $600 when I cashed out), but I've always had that itch in the back of my brain to play. The current block is another Innistrad block, the original of which was one of my all-time favorites, and with my older daughter wanting to learn to play, we're dipping our toes into the water ever so slightly. If you ever decide you don't want your online account any more, let me know. Maybe we can work out a deal where I buy your cards from you through PayPal. In the event you want to keep it, maybe we can hook up sometime and play Commander, which is my favorite casual format to play, and like you, I prefer it when it is less combo-y and more Big Stupid Monsters bashing into each other and people finding uses for seemingly useless cards (ever been on the clock due to a Havoc Festival? That gets your blood pumping and makes you get creative real fast).
