I didn't know what to call this. Most of my comic book tastes tend to be more old school. However I find I do enjoy the "mature" or "realistic" or "over the top" books like The Authority or The Ultimates.
I loved the first 12 issues of The Authority by Ellis & Hitch. When Millar came on the book I really didn't like his version....but his Ultimates with Hitch for 26 issues were great!
I also enjoyed com.x' Cla$$war by Williams, Hairsine & Foreman.
And one of my favorites was Supreme Power by JMS & Frank. It fell apart when it became Squadron Supreme.
Having said that I was wondering if there are any other titles out there similar to these that may be worthwhile to read?
One I am considering is JMS' Rising Stars.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions & thoughts...

Invincible is a lot more over the top than it might appear from the covers. It's bloody and violent as all get out. The series is also more of a team book than the title indicates too as there is quite a back cast of characters.

Rising Stars starts out well, and then JMS loses his way.. but they did just announce a TV version is coming, so the book will spike in popularity most likely. have you not read " Invisibles"? it's spectacular. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Invisiblesand you also really can't go wrong with Morrison's take on Doom Patrolmuch more recent, Titan Comics' the Troop has been seriously good reading.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I have tried Invincible. Never read Invisibles or the Troop. I have read some of the Stormwatch issues & Morrison's Doom Patrol.
As far as Rising Stars it sounds like JMS...starts out great & slowly dies at the end!

Millar's current Jupiter's Legacy/ Circle series of mini series have been quite good.
Top 10 from Alan Moore, sort of a Hill Street Blues with superheroes.
It's been a long time since I read a new issue, but I did like Bendis' Powers the first few years it came out.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is incredible. I'll second this recommendation in a heartbeat.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is incredible. Up until Century. I found books 2 and 3 of that awful, consisting mostly of Moore whining about the Harry Potter books. But he has redeemed the series with the Janni Nemo series of graphic novels (especially Heart of Ice). Greatly helped by the total absence of Orlando.

Jupiter's Legacy was one I was considering. Millar is hit or miss for me. I will have to research LoEG to see if it something I would like.
Update: I am going to start with Jupiter's Legacy/Circle. The first 2 trades are $6 each on amazon...

What about DC's Watchmen? - Agree or Disagree?

What about DC's Watchmen? - Agree or Disagree? Agree. Read it when it first came out. I was working at a LCS at the time. It was a great time between Watchmen, DKR & DC's post Crisis titles.

I definitely agree that Watchmen is excellent (especially at the time it came out). But I also assume that most people on this forum have probably read it (which is a bias on my part I will admit).
What was a shame was that many writers of lesser talent than Alan Moore seemed to miss the point of Watchmen and that it was a deconstruction of the various superhero tropes. Instead they saw 'grim and gritty' and saw the success of Watchmen and assumed that 'grim and gritty' was the was the reason for its success, and attempted to emulate it, resulting in the 90s excesses where every new 'superhero' seemed to bear the words Blood, Kill or Death in their name in some combination.
But Watchmen a superlative piece of storytelling and far superior to the vastly overrated (IMO) Dark Knight Returns.
