I'm always kind of interested to see what people think are among the "must read" books, not solely just for the characters, but for the overarching story/plot. What are some of yours? Because the only one that's coming to mind at the moment is Busiek and Ross' "Marvels".
Kind of funny how one five issue mini-series is what got me so invested in a universe that seemed almost bigger than life itself at the time

We compiled a Top 100 for this a long while back. I'd intended to bring it back this summer, but I just haven't had the time. Here were the old results. We didn't have enough participants, so I consider the bottom 50 a little shaky, but the Top 50 makes a pretty sound list: classiccomics.boards.net/thread/127/ccfs-comic-book-sagas-2014

I just took a glance at the 100 list and I can't believe All Star Superman was #100. I plan on reading it this week. Maybe if you have the survey again we'll have more participants and a vastly different outcome.

I really do want to do this again, but it's A LOT of work.

I know Loeb's writing is hit or miss. But I really liked when he paired with Tim Sale on Superman, Batman & Catwoman at DC & Spider-Man, Daredevil, Hulk & Capt America at Marvel.

I'm a big fan of Busiek's run on Conan, and Hellboy: The Midnight Circus is one of the most beautiful comics I've ever seen.

Yeah, they had a way about their style that made it feel true to Howard's prose but with out feeling like it was just copied and pasted.

What was even better was they did their own version of Conan without copying what had come before through Marvel. It was fresh and interesting in writing and artwork that didn't mimic anyone else. It was it's own unique interpretation that really held your attention and drew you into following the series. Sadly once Busiek and Nord left so did my interest.

I haven't even read 57 out of the top 100 and I doubt all of the other 43 would make such a list.

There were a few other decent runs after them at Dark Horse, but yeah I think it's safe to say that so far they are the pinnacle.

Yeah, his stuff with Sale is great. Most of it was also written before the death of his son, which is when he really started to go off the rails (quite understandably, obviously). You can see it happen in real time reading Superman/Batman.
