There was no mention or appearance of Hanako's mother. I assume she's around somewhere because the father took pains to mention how fortunate he was in life, and I don't think he would feel that way if he were a widower. Unless his former wife was a harridan and things are better without her. Be that as it may, when this story ended, I found myself wondering what would become of poor Hanako.
The game hanatsuki looked like a bit like speedminton (essentially badminton without a net) with cricket bats. I was curious about it, but googling "hanatsuki" brought up...something unrelated.

Yeah, I was looking to learn more about the game too but no dice. As for the ending I was a little saddened that the Motojime won, and I too feel for little Hanako. |

More of a set up issue for characters and story to coming later and yet the truly despicable Saiko helps to showing us that we must always be aware of our surroundings and not let down our guard for fear of what evil is hiding around us. There are always "bad" people lurking in the background hoping to inflict pain and suffering upon innocents or others all in the hopes of their own reward. Saiko only seeks her revenge for what she see's as an injustice upon her from Usagi. An innocent child becomes a tool for Saiko and Usagi has to find a way for saving the child and stopping Saiko. Sometimes the answers and choices are not so easy to decide upon and every action taken or not taken only leads to more danger. What is a Ronin to do other than his best to protect and honor friends and others?

I did a Bing search for "hanatsuki" and my top result was a Wikipedia entry for "hanetsuki" (with an "e" instead of the second "a"): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HanetsukiThe entry is very short, but I think this is what you were looking for. |
