I watched Patterns of Force and Journey to Babel last night. Both were very enjoyable.

Apparently the guy who directed the last few fast and furious movies has been tapped to direct the next trek film. I was really hoping the third would be a more character driven and contemplative film but that would seem to be out the window.

I was really hoping the third would be a more character driven and contemplative film but that would seem to be out the window. Unfortunately, Into Darkness took a lot of heat for being intelligent and deep, even with all the explosions, excessive nods to Wrath of Khan, break-neck editing, and lens flares that make the simple minded smirk and eat their popcorn a little faster. Intelligence and strong characterization never win over the box offices where Trek films are concerned, regrettably.

I didn't have the energy to pay attention to Deep Space Nine (I have 5 to go so I want to really appreciate them) so I started TNG. I've seen all of the fifth season and a lot of the other six, but I've never watched them all in a row.
I'm on episode three and I finally understand why people didn't like Wesley and I'm not sure how I feel about Tasha Yar. However, I've found Troi, Riker and the Doctor surprisingly likable.
It was a good idea to recall TOS early, but why use the drunk disease? It just seems a little early to be so ridiculous and terrible.

Regarding the new director, I saw this comment from someone about the matter and laughed.

At least now Kirk has an excuse to be the obnoxious car stealing, bar fighting douche he was in the first movie again.

To me, the only good parts of the movie were themes ripped off from wrath of Khan (i.e. needs of the many vs needs of the few). Any intelligence that Abrahams had in his movie was owed more to Nicholas Meyers and co. instead of his own ideas.

To each their own, of course, but i found the nods to wrath of Khan excessive and obnoxious. Meanwhile, Bennedick Cumbersomething was fantastic, as was this opportunity for Kirk to grow up in a situaton in which the authority he was to answer to had misused and misled him, causing him to wrestle with deep issues of loyalty, ethics, and self preservstion vs altruism and adhering to an ideal. I really got into it, to say the least.
I don't have any guns in that fight. I definitely don't know enough about the film's production to comment intelligently either way. However, I do know Meyers was the man behind Star Trek II and III, which were the ones that dumbed the franchise down to appeal to a wider audience after the first film had been deemed too slow and thoughtful, so I think it's equally likely Meyers is the one who brought in all the explosions and Khan references that I disliked so much.

I really liked the play on loyalty and ethics as well, which had really given me hope that we'd see more in the third. I mean, we still might, I never saw the more recent fast and furious movies but I've heard they were the best of the bunch and that they actually tried to have some semblance of a plot.

I take it back. I take it all back. I skipped around and ran into her. I didn't like the first movie. I think it was the acting, or maybe it's because I was never in love with Tos. I suppose I've never given it much of a shot beyond the movies. Maybe I'll like the third since it's a new director.

I take it back. I take it all back. I skipped around and ran into her. Love it. Pulaski's introduction in Season 2 definitely felt forced and a bit like a rip-off of McCoy from TOS, but she engaged with the other crew members better than Crusher did in Season One. Of course, once Gates McFadden returns in season 3, she ultimately becomes my favorite member of the cast. I pretty much nothinged the first of the new films; didn't like it and didn't actively dislike it. It was commercial and crowd pleasing, but not the kind of Trek I cared about. Into Darkness did a lot more to engage my mind and heart.

She has more personality.
I'll watch it before the third one comes out. I got it for Christmas from my brother, but I was assured it was terrible by my brother.

I never cared for Pulaski. I thought Dr. Crusher was more interesting.

I'm torn between both Pulaski and Dr. Crusher for different reasons and having said that - I just don't show favoritism between the two Star Trek Characters because I love them both equally well.
