Depends on how far before TOS. According to the first Abrams film, the Kelvin timeline split off from main continuity when Nero's ship traveled back to the past, which happened right around Kirk's birth. So if the TV show is set within Kirk's lifetime, they need to specify. Having said that -- I thought it was indicated a while ago that this show would not be taking place in the Kelvin timeline. Originally I heard that it was supposed be set between the events of Star Trek VI and TNG, but it looks like they decided to go back even further. I read an interview with Brian Fuller that said the hull registry of the new startship is the clue -- NCC-1031. Assuming that they are numbered in order, this would indicate that it takes place 670 starships prior to the Enterprise being constructed. More than 670 if any other starships got letters added after being rebuilt... Unless the Federation was pretty prolific it looks like it won't be 670 starships before the Enterprise as I read it was taking place just ten years prior to TOS.

I remember reading somewhere about a snafu of sorts concerning the registry numbering of Constitution-class starships.
I don't think that Roddenberry nor the OS writers intended for other ships to have a lower registry number than the Enterprise's 1701. But when The Doomsday Machine was being filmed, the effects dept ran into issues featuring the USS Constellation, one of which they solved by having to re-arrange 1701 into 1017 for the Constellation's registry number which derailed that earlier intention.
At least I think so. Could be mistaken in my recollections on this factoid.

Yeah, if I recall correctly it had to do with the effects department making the Constellation from an actual model kit of the Enterprise and so had to make do with the decals the kit included.

Sorry: I misread. I thought you meant between Enterprise and Discovery.

DC and IDW need to cross these two over and get it done before the 50th Anniversary Year is over.

I was thinking of this today, it's weird that they've chosen to set the new show in the continuity of the previous series and films. In the past when their was travel in time in Star Trek it wasn't something that created an alternate time line but rather something that actually affected the present of the shows/films so why bend of backwards now to change that?

Just saw the seventh episode of Star Trek continues on Youtube, "embrace the winds". That series really rocks! Despite being a fan production, I find it far more satisfying than the official Trek films and tv shows being produced since DS9 ended. It doesn't feel bogged down by minutiae and isn't plagued by continuity bugs *Koff* Nemesis* Koff*.
The production values remain high... the effects are just perfect: just retro enough, justbas in the originL series. And there are so many Easter eggs... Erin Gray playing "Commodore Gray", and the computer being boiced by Marina Sirtis (now that Majel Barrett has sadly passed away, we must have have another member of the Troy family lending their voice, right?)
The plot of this episode seems surprisingly dated for the XXIII century (patriarchal bias and the glass ceiling), but that, too, is quintessential Trek: discussing XXth century problems in a future context!
I hope that series goes on for years and years.
(I took a look at Star Trek Renegades immediately after, and stopped after a few minutes. It really can't compare).

I've never heard of this, and I'm going to need to rectify that.

I'm on episode three now and I'm loving it, it truly feels like the real McCoy ... well except for the guy who plays Doctor McCoy.
