First episode was pretty solid, I loved the buddy cop shtick between the Orion and the Andorian in the market.

Recently watched the documentary " What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" which is available for free on YouTube and thought it was mostly enjoyable. I then realized DS9 is available on both Netflix and Amazon so started binge watching this week. I think this is the only Star Trek series from that era I haven't watched in it's entirety and have really been enjoying season 1.

I think this is the only Star Trek series from that era I haven't watched in it's entirety and have really been enjoying season 1. Boy are you in for a treat The show continuously gets better with each season. Season two begins experimenting with ongoing, soap-opera like storylines that don't resolve neatly at the end of the episode. By the time of season four, that's pretty much how the entire show is written. The show continuously evolves, perhaps because the writers were more desperate -- the show was not universally accepted by the fanbase--so they kept working to outdo themselves, and it really worked. I know very few people who watched up to Season 4 and didn't end up feeling the journey had been worthwhile. Many will tell you it's their favorite Trek series. Next Gen is still the one that had the most impact upon me, but I love DS9 in a very different and nearly equal way.

Am I the only Trek fan who went from feeling like I was one of Trek's last die-hard fans to suddenly feeling alienated by all the new stuff coming out? I don't want to watch Picard. I'm happy with how TNG ended. I don't have the time nor interest to follow three new Trek shows either. But I can't talk to anyone about Trek anymore without being swamped by discussions about the new stuff. Classic TOS fans didn't have to deal with this when TNG, DS9, and Voyager came out, did they? I feel like there was always a loud, curmudgeony contingent that never accepted those shows. So where are my curmudeony brothers now? I'm not judging the stuff I haven't watched, but I feel like I can't be a true Trek fan nor be part of any Trek fan communities without plunging wholeheartedly into them.

I haven't watched Discovery yet past the first episode but was curious about Picard as I noticed it's already out on Blu-Ray and available for a reasonable enough price at Walmart.

How much is Michelle Yeoh in Discovery? If she gets a lot of screentime I might give it a shot. I forget why now, but the pilot somehow left me with the impression that her character wouldn't be appearing much thereafter, so I didn't carry on with it, since she was the only thing I liked about that first episode or two. But I saw a report recently that made it sound as if she was playing a large part in at least this one story or episode that was being reviewed.

Picked up the latest issue of STAR TREK MAGAZINE. This was a question that was posed: Did the inclusion of characters from the original series hold back the second season of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY in terms of story and character development?
Over to you. Any views on this?

Her character died in the pilot, but half way through the first season they go to the Mirror Universe and you find out her evil counterpart is the Empress of the Terran Empire. She's off and on in the second season as she comes back to the normal universe and gets recruited by Section 13 and in season three she's a major character.

Frankly I loved seeing Pike and Spock, both actors did really well bringing these characters to screen and I'm excited they are getting their own show aboard the Enterprise.

Over to you. Any views on this? I haven't seen any of Discovery since I refuse to pay for Paramount (or Disney+ or HBO Max etc) but my opinion is: you have the cajones to try and do Star Trek set before TOS then you NEED to avoid anything about TOS and tell/sell your own thing. It needs to succeed on it's own merits and by bringing in Pike/Spock/Enterprise so soon shows they are admitting that they can't do it without TOS. Kind of like saying in Smallville it ends when Clark puts on the suit and cape, then Discovery should embrace the Trek mythology and explore that with TOS being the end goal. Did they have so little faith in the creation of their own series or was it due to all of the fan backlash? Either way, to bring in Pike/crew only weakens Discovery. Especially when they have bigger issues to confront with a redesign of everything from Klingon to Starfleet to adding an unknown human step-sister to Spock's family and history? I really have no interest or desire to view Discovery. It may be the cranky old man in me but ever since Abrams Trek took the easy out as an ALTERNATIVE/REINVENTING rather than just creating ALL NEW, they pissed all over Trek Fandom that grew up with TOS. Now Discovery is doing more of the same. Even as fans were angry with Enterprise when it was on television with naming the ship Enterprise and placing a Vulcan on the crew, Discovery just feels "wrong" in so many ways.

That might be enough to get me to start watching, though I'm pretty sceptical, even cynical, about the whole Star Trek, Inc. business these days and have almost zero belief in their ability to come up with anything worthwhile.

The first season is pretty uneven but the second was pretty good and the third has been solid so far.

Can I say that while I did enjoy some of what I’ve seen of DISCOVERY (season one only so far), it seems a little too self-aware. I mean, did anyone really lobby for all that House of Klingon stuff, which, if I’m honest, bores me?
