Also note, Marvel's Vice President of Sales said in an interview earlier this week that according to the demographics surveys sponsored by Disney, over 40% of all the Marvel's output sold since Disney's takeover has been sold to women. This includes not just physical comics, but digital comics, con sales at the Marvel booth, trades via the book market and through Diamond, toys, etc. I've been hearing this for several years now. My LCS owner will also attest that women spend far more money in her shop than men these days, and I notice both with my students and with my adult friends on facebook that women have become very into superheroes in a way that my male students and male friends are not. The culture has really changed. I welcome the shifts this is creating in comicdom and will continue to create. I'm so tired of retreads of old familiar territory.

One recent development I am pleased to see is the return of the real Amanda Waller, replacing the skinny model version of the New 52. The original Waller is an excellent character, and showed that comics could depict older women (and women of colour) holding down important positions, exercising authority, being respected and generally taking no crap.

For current work, I've really been enjoying Bitch Planet by Kelly Sue DeConnick & Valentine De Landro and Monstress by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda. And I've always liked Trina Robbins' work. And Ramona Fradon's Metamorpho was great stuff.

Marie Severin is one of my favourite artists and I always think it's a shame she didn't get more extended runs on different series. Just look at her and her brother John's work on Marvel's Kull, and her art on humour books like Not Brand Ecch.
Julie Doucet was a favourite of mine in the 90s but I've lost track of her the last decade or so.
There are several newer artists I've been impressed by lately from samples online but I'll wait until I actually read some of their work before talking about them. The current writers I have even less knowledge of.

I don't know that DC was necessarily any better, but I have been told by Neal Adams the reason Vince Colletta kept getting work was that he was taking the troop out to strip clubs and connecting them with prostitutes. Can't imagine that was the kind of environment that came without a glass ceiling.

Another up and coming female artist to keep an eye on is Tula Lotay-she did Supreme Blue Rose with Warren Ellis and is working on another Image project with him. -M I really like her artwork and look forward to seeing more of it. She's also doing an arc of All-Star Batman with Scott Snyder and her next project with Ellis is a horror story called Heartless.

I'm only familiar with Shutz as editor of Usagi Yojimbo, where Stan Sakai was pretty much making all the decisions and turning in flawless work on time. What else has Shutz done that's worthy of note? She was the editor in chief at Comico during their peak years in the latter 80s. That's a pretty notable achievement considering the state of women in the industry back then. Plus 25 years at Dark Horse working with various creators. She was responsible for Dark Horse getting creators to do their creator owned books at DH at a time when Image was so popular.

Fiona Staples, Becky Cloonan and Sara Pichelli are among the few new artists whose work I really noticed in the 2010s. The future of comic-book art is in good hands!

I'm a little surprised it took this long for her to get mentioned!

I'm getting some respect for these talented ladies and one more lady that I want to share about his Meredith Fitch who did Wonder Woman and I liked the way she wrote it. She and her husband David did a good job with that Iconic DC Character.

My favorite female creators tend to be outside of mainstream comics, like MK Brown, Carol Lay, and Mary Fleener, though I think June Brigman, Colleen Duran, and Amanda Connor are probably as good as--and probably better--than most of the superhero artists who came into the business about the same time as them.
Karen Berger might be the most important editor to enter the business after the silver age, essentially identifying, launching, and guiding a spin-off imprint to serve and build a specific audience.

Yeah, I didn't think to mention that because I thought that was more generally known. Dark Horse is still around, and has a higher profile than Comico ever did.

My daughters love Katie Cook's work on "My Little Pony", and I am a big fan of Chelsea Cain's "Mockingbird" series from Marvel right now.
