I'm currently plowing through the Jill Lepore book as background for my own. It's fascinating reading but I'm bothered by her complete lack of understanding of the difference between Detective Comics and All-American (Max Gaines was *not* the publisher of Superman or Batman). When I see that kind of error in a book, it makes me question the accuracy of those parts dealing with facts I'm not conversant with. Cei-U! I summon the skimpy scholarship! She explains her use of "DC" as shorthand, and summarizes the various mergers etc., in a note on page 342.

Good, although I still think it's inexcusably sloppy and misleading the way she's handled it. Cei-U! I summon the stickler for accuracy!

Wonder Woman was always a bit different than other comics in the 40's & again later in the 60's when she was just Diana Prince.

I just can't believe that anyone have ever mentioned this until now ... When she first joined as a honorary member of the Justice Battalion / Justice Society - they made her the secretary of that team - outside of Doctor Fate and Green Lantern she's unquestionably the strongest member of that team - her strength would be valuable to the team because Superman wasn't a member of that team neither was Batman at the start of the Justice Battalion / Justice Society. When, I was a kid reading these books at the time they first started (reading used books) back then and that's didn't faze me on bit and now thinking about it while I had breakfast with friends this came to my mind and it's bothers me a lot of the attitude of writers that didn't think highly of Wonder Woman back then and that's why she always be on the back seat in comparison of her male counterparts namely the Justice Society / Batman / Superman back then. She was a secretary at first and some point of time they decided to make her a full-fledged member of the JSA and I can't recall what issue it was when they decided to drop the Secretary Act and decided to use her a full member instead!

What issue was this from? I forgot the JSA was the Justice Battalion. Does anyone remember how long that lasted?

md62 - I don't know at this point but I do recall that she was a secretary and I'm afraid that you have to wait until Sunday to find out. I'm a bit busy and I could find out for you later on ... hopefully by Sunday you get an answer.

W. M. Marston was responsible for Wonder Woman being restricted to secretarial work in the JSA strip. He didn't want other people writing her (other than Joye Hummell, who worked under his supervision). That's why he insisted on rewriting her chapters in All-Star #11 and 13 (he apparently thought Gardner Fox mischaracterized her). Editor Sheldon Mayer decided it wasn't worth the hassle of coordinating with two scripters every issue, using the "rule" that said heroes with their own titles didn't serve on active duty as his justification. They didn't start using Wondy as a full-fledged JSAer until All-Star #33 (February-March 1947), by which time Marston was dying of cancer and no longer had any pull.
Cei-U! I summon the glimpse behind the curtain!

Remember when Wonder Woman shamed Padlock Pete when she bet him that not only could she escape his best lock and chain trap but that she could do it in the Justice Society lap pool filled with lime jello before the rest of the gang came back from lunch ? Pete slinked off in disgrace and never even got to appear on panel

LOL Weird how we never saw her taking notes or answering the Justice phone Most of her time was spent in another room, entertaining the boy's girlfriends and wives, telling them tales of Suffering Sappho and free demos of Purple Ray treatments to tighten the buttocks

Sometimes Wonder Woman would have sorority pledge Etta Candy mix drinks for me, usually blindfolded. After a too few drinks, everyone decided to dance, but do it the right way wearing masks, to conceal their secret identities.

Concealing the identities they reveal to each other in expository dialogue...
