IMO characters that work in any time are Batman, Flash, Green Arrow, Aquaman, Blue Beetle, Atom, Spider-Man, Thor, Daredevil, Iron Man, Moon Knight, Dr Strange, Namor.
Characters that work best in their original time period are Wonder Woman, Superman, Capt Marvel (Fawcett), Plastic Man, FF, Capt America, Hulk.
Characters like Green Lantern could work if you change their secret ID to "fit" today.

I suppose any revolving team would fit too, as it can be updated as needed (Avengers, X-Men, etc.) But fixed teams re tied to their past.
Batman is a fascinating case. Years ago I read some reprint pocketbooks that really appealed to me. If I could find more like that I'd be converted, the art was polished, and the emphasis was on detective work plus his interesting environment. But there have been so many different kinds of Batman story, and the others don't really grab me. I'm not into violent Batman, impossibly brilliant Batman, campy Batman, super friends Batman, super enemies Batman or relationships Batman. I just liked the detective stories and rich environment with classy production values.
What is it about his character that makes him so flexible? I'm guessing its his secrecy, which allows the reader to infer whatever he wants?

I guess first of all his origin works in any time period. He is more multifaceted than a lot of characters. He had to train in a lot of different disciplines so he can transition from detective to superhero to brilliant inventor to fighter with more ease than others. He also has a huge supporting cast that are popular on their own. Come on who doesn't love Alfred? He is a leader in the superhero community. He also has one of the most interesting rogues gallery in comics.

Wait a minute, as tolworthy points out, which Batman are you talking about
Original gothic solo Batman Friendlier Batman with Robin the Boy Wonder Detective Batman of the early 1950s Interstellar Batman with Batmite and ace The Bat Hound New Look Science Detective Batman Campy Batman with his own TV show Back to basics Batman without Robin early 70s
Didn't read much Batman after that but the above, clearly was not the same guy and judging from comments I've read, Bats has continued to change his personality and modus operandi into, at least, psychotic Batman and Batgod.
So yeah, Batman is eternal because he eternally changes. Schizophrenic Batman
