Brutal Nature (#1-#4)
IDW Publishing
Writer: Luciano Saracino
Artist: Ariel Olivetti
Quick Plot Summary: Evil Spanish conquistadors are killing South American Villagers for their gold, and only Ich, with his magic masks that let him transform into monstrous creatures and fight back, can retaliate.
Issue 1: A Jungle girl is attacked by Spaniards, and prays to the Jungle for help. She gets the the help in the form in form of a giant bear, who is really Ich. Ich wins, but is wounded. Several Days later, he returns to his home village to find the Spanish have destroyed it while he healed.
Issue 2: The governor of the Spanish colony calls in an inquisitor (who may actually be Satan) and his thug 'The German' to figure out what the deal is with the animal attacks. Ich takes some mushrooms and tries to figure stuff out.
Issue 3: Lots of blood is spilt, and the girl(Yarezeti), tries to get Ich to think bigger than just killing Spaniards when he sees them. He gets a few other tribes to back him to 'surrender' and attack the Spanish colony from within.
Issue 4: Ich's plan works, but he still has to confront the Inquisitor... the final battle is at hand!
Comments: If you want to look at pretty pictures and cool jungle monster designs, this is the book for you. The art is 100% painted, and is really beautiful. Unfortunately, it's also rather static, which does nothing for the already pretty boring and formulaic story. Yarezeti seems to supposed to be the 'soul' or 'conscious' to tame the beast, but she's only in 2 of the issues, and has only a few cryptic lines that Ich clearly doesn't get. Her real purpose seems to be to give a few fan service shots, which I hate. I would love to see something else from this artist that has a little more meat behind it story wise.
If you like the art, I would recommend the trade (or maybe wait and see if a spiffy artists editon comes out), but not at all worth the price of the singles for the story. I probably won't pick up the next mini (creatively titled 'Brutal Nature II').
