Action Comics #963"Superman, Meet Clark Kent: Part One" Written by Dan Jurgens Art by Patrick Zircher Colored by Arif Prianto Summery: As Metropolis once again recovers from the onslaught of Doomsday the mild mannered Clark Kent steps into the spotlight attempting to clear his name once and for all: he was never the man of steel!
Plot: While I did enjoy the rock em' sock em' robot battle that was the recent battle with doomsday, the hook that really had me coming back was the guy claiming to be Clark Kent. And while the whole, "Look, Clark and Superman are in the same room together!" shtick has been done many times in the past, Jurgens is able to some how breath new life into the concept and make it feel like a new, compelling mystery. At a press conference held by Lex Luthor, the self titled protector of Metropolis and owner of the Daily Planet, Clark pleads his case; he was working on a story about a genetics company doing something fishy that got too hot to handle to Superman switched places with him so that he wouldn't be harmed. Naturally, the crowd didn't buy it...and as a long time Superman reader neither did I. We know Clark Kent is Superman, it's the most basic truth of the concept, so what's Jurgen's game? Is this the real Superman only bereft of powers doing his best to try and carve out a normal life for himself? Is this Clark his own "proof" that the genetics company he's investigating is into human cloning? Is it a rogue robot escaped from the Fortress of Solitude trying to claim its former master's life!? Ultimately Jurgens doesn't give us many clues to go in this issue, but the interpersonal relationships between Clark, Perry and Jimmy feel right, the intrigue is heavy and over all it has a very classic feel to it that makes it fun to read.
Art: While Zircher's pencil work is expressive and detailed the heavy and obviously digital color pallet provided by Prianto gives it a flat sterile look that has a habit of blending together into a haze of sameness. I think if he were paired with another colorist his work would ultimately feel much stronger. Don't get me wrong, as presented here, it is is servicible but there's just nothing to it to make you want to linger on any of the panels.
Conclusion: Jurgens manages to weave an interesting mystery out of a familiar concept that is sure to keep you coming back for more. Personally my money is on a depowered Superman trying to live a normal life, but with the genetics angle the clone idea could be true as well so only time will tell.

Looking forward to reading Action today! Sounds really good, great review! It was pretty good, I've been really surprised by just how good the superman family of books has been. It's probably the best its been since the triangle years.

All Star Batman #2"My Own Worst Enemy: Part Two" Written by Scott Snyder Penciled by John Romita Jr. Inked by Dani Miki Colored by Dean White Summary: Batman and Two Face continue their road trip for truth, but Killer Croc, King Shark, Cheshire and the KGBeast are out to collect the bounty on Batman's head!
Plot: While I usually find fault with the way Snyder ends his stories I've never minded his beginnings as he usually finds an interesting way in creating a great mood to his work and the ideas are usually fresh and interesting...but unfortunately I can't say the same here. All Star Batman starts with a fairly interesting premise; there is a cure for Harvey but Two-Face wants no part of it so he puts out a hit on Batman in order to stop him from curing him and ending Two-Face forever. It should be a fun, if slightly simple action piece right? But it's not. In an effort to give it a feeling of greater depth Snyder introduces a plot line in addition to the bounty on Batman, if Batman isn't stopped Two Face will reveal every dirty secret in Gotham showing that everyone is just like him. Okay, so now it's not just Batman's enemies after him but also just everyday people which although it feels contrived(How does Two-Face know everyone's dirty secrets? Does everyone really have a secret worth killing for?) is alright enough but when he drags in Bullock, Gordon and even Alfred as being among those looking to break the bat Snyder stretches it a little too thin. There maybe some reason given down the line why his friends are apparently trying to stop him, maybe it's part of his "plan" in the end and we the readers are the only ones not in on it but in order for that to work the characters have to be written believably, we have to be given reason for why they'd turn on Batman beyond, "But the Two Face will expose my secrets!", there has to be some kind of empathy and there just isn't so what we're left with are action packed fight scenes with a who's who of Batman villains with nothing compelling really tying them together...all at 5 bucks a pop, so color me way underwhelmed.
Art: I'm not the biggest fan of JR Jr's work, but I have to say that his blocky, cartoony look makes the action scenes with Batman's villains at least fun to look at, but all he can do facially appears to either be a grimace or a face at rest so there isn't much emotion to the quieter scenes which doesn't help Snyder sell why all these people are really after Batman.
Conclusion: What could have been a fun show case of all of Batman's rogues in the vain of the Long Halloween or Hush really falls flat. Other than the villains there just doesn't seem to be a proper or compelling sense of motivation for the others to turn on Batman and without that I'm left feeling very unmotivated to follow the story to its conclusion, especially at 5 bucks an issue, so unless we strike it big time between now and next month and DC starts sending us free copies to review I will not be picking up another issue.

I balked at the $5 cover price on All Star Batman. I figured if it was great I would wait for the trade. I am glad I passed on it.

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #2"Who is Oracle?: Learn to Fly" Written by Julie and Shawna Benson Art by Clair Roe and Roge Antonio Summary: The newly minted Birds of Prey team up with Jim Gordon and the GCPD to protect a mafioso with information on the new criminal known as the Oracle while they track down leads on the person who has stolen Bab's former identity.
Plot: In the first issue the Benson's introduced an interesting mystery in the search for the criminal who has stolen the Oracle name and provided a compelling reason for why the Huntress should team up with Batgirl and Black Canary. In this issue they build on that introduction by giving us more time with the three leads and the dynamics they create between them are really fun and the culmination of those bonds creates a believable sense of trust by the issues end which is a great bit of character driven writing. We don't really progress much towards finding out who this new Oracle is, but the characters are really starting to breath on their own and the developments are fun to watch.
Art: I've never heard of either of these artists and honestly, I can't detect where one ends and the other begins and the back grounds are pretty bland but the energy in the fight scenes has a great kinetic feel to it and the facial expressions on the three leads really give them each a definite sense of personality so although nothing spectacular the art is serviceable.
Conclusion: "Who is Oracle?" is proving to be a great origin story for the Birds of Prey with the second issue, there's plenty of action, the characters are getting time to come into their own and there feels like there is a real reason for them to be a team.

Gotham Academy: Second Semester #1"Welcome Back to Gotham Academy" Written by Brendan Fletcher, Becky Cloonan and Karl Kerschl Penciled by Adam Archer Inked by Sandra Hope
Summary: Olive is once again stuck at the academy for break but finds she's not alone as she's introduced to her new roommate Amy who leads her into trouble in the school museum where new mysteries abound.
Plot: What I've always loved most about Gotham Academy is it's strong character focus, through out the first series Fletcher created some great characters and developed some beautiful relationships. During the more anthology styled Year Book phase last spring he strayed from that to a more kooky adventures feel akin to Scooby Doo and while they were fun that strong emotional core wasn't as present but it seems like with the start of this new semester he's trying to bring that back by moving Olive back to the spot light. In this issue, Olive is isolated from he rest of the cast because it's the winter break and she has no where to go being an orphan. She's not alone for long though as we're soon introduced to Olive's new roommate Amy who is brash and destructive which inevitably leads to trouble. While this more singular style does lead one to believe the book is swinging back to its original tone, and the reintroduction to Olive through a new character is a good way to be new reader friendly it comes off feeling a little hollow as Amy feels a little one dimensional with her rebellious spirit but with the other characters returning at the end for the start of school it ultimately left you feeling hopeful for the rest of the second semester.
Art: Along with the strong emotional resonance the art has always been another strong point and Archer’s art doesn't fail to impress, especially with the heavy inks of Sandra hope and the amazing backgrounds by Msassyk. Together these artists successfully create a look that easily distinguishes Gotham Academy from the rest of the DC line by giving the world a style all it's own that crosses hauntingly gothic paintings with fresh, bubbly character designs straight out of a Miyazaki film. It's just beautiful.
Conclusion: While the introduction of the new character Amy is a bit of rough start the promise of returning to that fun Batman meets Harry Potter kind of a book coupled with the beautiful art definitely make this book a worth while read.

Detective Comics #940"The Red Badge of Courage" **Spoilers ahead** Written by James Tynion IV Penciled by Eddie Barrows Inked by Eber Fierria Colored by Adriano Lucas Summary: As Batwoman confronts her father Tim Drake faces off against the impossible odds of the drone army of the Batmen.
Plot: Previously, this book had been driven by some great character beats and fun relationship building as Tynion worked to introduce and build the team of Clay Face, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, Cass Cain and Batwoman into a cohesive unit. It had some great moments and built a fun X-Men team vibe to...but that ended here. After a few issues spent building Tim's possible exit from being a superhero and going to college, which could have presented some interesting story possibilities we are instead treated with his fake out death that ties into the Rebirth framing story...so yet again more proof of company wide crossovers and editorial powers gone mad ruining a book. There were good things building here but this just came out of the blue and really torpedoed the momentum the story was building.
Art: Eddie Barrows really tries hard to sell the ending, the emotional reactions in the faces of Bruce and Stephanie are perfect and his choice of focusing on their hands was a great lay out choice...ultimately though it can't save Tim's "death" from feeling hollow.
Conclusion: Although there were some great beats in the fight between Kate and her father it was all torpedoed by editorial interference. What a waste.

Wonder Woman #6"Year One: Part Three" Written by Greg Rucka Art by Nicola Scott Colored by Romulo Fajardo Summary: Diana travels with Steve in the invisible jet to reunite him and his fallen comrades with their loved ones back in the world of men.
Plot: While Rucka's new retelling of Wonder Woman's origin story continues to be an exercise in decompressed storytelling there are some great character moments that really let Diana, Steve, Etta and even Minerva really shine. What's great is that Rucka really makes Steve a compelling character, which is something I've seldom seen before; there was one scene in particular where he sings to the child of one of his fallen friends that really makes you get who Steve is and it's beautiful. So yes, while the story is slow and the see-sawing between the Year One story the present day story is slightly frustrating(on both fronts as both stories are compelling) it's ultimately worth it as the time is well spent.
Art: One of Nicola Scott's greatest strengths is her use of facial expressions is fantastic, their are several panels that are so life like that you just feel like you're watching a live action film. My favorite single panel though was the scene where we see Diana's mugshot on the military base, she looks both slightly confused and yet still full of joy like looking at a child's first photo-shoot. Just pure fun.
Conclusion: Though the pace is plodding the time used is well spent so you don't miss the action at all.

Mr. Quinlan: Vampire Hunter #1 Scripted by David Lapham Penciled by Edgar Salazar Inked by Keith Champagne Colored by Dan Jackson Summary: This is this story of how the only son of the Master, the most powerful vampire in the world, came to be and how he learned to fight.
Plot: Based on the Strain novels by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan this book serves as a back story for one of the more enigmatic characters, Mr.Quinlan, who is a vampire and human hybrid. In illustrating the birth of Quinlan and his development Lapham starts with a short, choppy style in his narration and develops into a more verbose monologue as we see Quinlan grow. While that is certainly an interesting literary technique, and it does give it a unique feel I think the narrative could have perhaps been better suited to a more art focused story as the images seemed to make many of the monologues feel almost redundant.
Art: My favorite parts of this book were the black, white and red artwork which was so incredibly striking that I almost wish the whole book was done in a similarly more limited color pallet as the imagery and the lay out gave it a very Universal Monsters feel to it.
Conclusion: Although the monologues feel a little wordy at times the comic does move at an incredibly fast pace, so fast that I almost wish the pace was a little slower which would allow us to better become more immersed in the world of the Strain. The good part of it though is that whether you a fan of the Strain or not you'll find something to enjoy if you're a fan of vampire stories.

Looking forward to reading Action today! Sounds really good, great review! I've been kinda annoyed by the fake Clark Kent, but it sounds like it might actually go somewhere... and I do like Pat Zircher... nice to see he made it out of the 90s. Some other DC Comments: While it's good for re-creating the OLD Birds of Prey book, Batgirl and the Birds of Prey, IMO should have been about the NEW ones.... they were just establishing a 'team' of sorts at the end of the New 52 Batgirl book, and that seems to be completely dumped now.. we basically HAD a new Oracle, even. Glad Gotham Academy is back.. hope it sells enough to stick around.. we need more unique books in the DCU. Rucka and Scott need to stop writing Wonder Woman RIGHT NOW and go back to Black Magick... I don't care how good it might be... darn it! This is why I have trouble getting into Image books... as soon as I do, they go on 'hiatus'!

Planning on reading Action tonight. I read Wonder Woman last night and I absolutely loved it. Although the pacing is slow (almost like Rucka is taking his time to get the story right), I appreciate it as we are getting a chance to know who the characters are. I loved the scene with Steve and the baby. Also, this Wonder Woman seems to be more peaceful and patient than the new 52 version. The scenes where she and Steve arrive--the officers are coming at them and she merely stands with her bracelets crossed, like she is going to defend herself--I feel like if this was new 52, she would have beheaded everyone or something equally violent. The scenes where she is wishing she could go home to Paradise Island were very much what a real person would experience. The bond between her and Steve is becoming quite clear and strong. Also loved seeing Etta in the mix. Looking forward to Barbara Minerva's story as well. For me, this issue was a solid 9 due to the fresh takes on classic Wonder Woman elements and the beautiful art by Nichola Scott. It was almost like art out of a storybook. Looking forward to reading Action tonight. If I can stay awake I will read Superwoman as well, haha!

I see the comments about fake Clark a lot online but I just don't get it, the stories with him are entertaining so I just can't see getting hung up on the fact that he wasn't the original in this continuity. I do agree about Birds of Prey though, as good as the book is now I was really digging Spoiler, Blue Bird and Batgirl as the Birds of Prey and I hope they come back.
