Tales of the Zombie
Steve Gerber/Pablo Marcos
15 stories in TALES OF THE ZOMBIE 1-9 (1973-1974).
Writers: Roy Thomas, Stan Lee, Steve Gerber (9), Doug Moench, Tony Isabella, Chris Claremont.
Pencillers: John Buscema, Bill Everett, Pablo Marcos (9), Virgilio Redondo, Yong Montano, Ron Wilson.
Inkers: Tom Palmer, Syd Shores, Alfredo Alcala.
Average: 6.5/10
Altar of the Damned (#1)
Grim tale, with several unpleasant characters.
Yet, the story and atmosphere draw the reader in and make it very enjoyable.
9/10
Zombie! (#1)
Basic story.
Moody.
Simple.
With a mild twist.
6/10
Night of the Walking Dead (#1)
Strange concoction.
Disjointed scenes.
Doesn’t really fit together.
Lots of death.
5/10
Voodoo Island! (#2)
Story rambles a lot.
Changing characters and locations without much effort spent in tying it all together.
I presume it’s going somewhere? But this doesn’t inspire confidence.
4/10
Night of the Spider! (#2)
Although it occasionally strives to be dark and mature and thought-provoking, the parts of it that are pure nonsense make it difficult to take the rest of it seriously.
This series had a strong start, but it’s now just rambling onward without direction.
4/10
When the Gods Crave Flesh! (#3)
Strange story, driven by coincidence and dumb characters making bad decisions.
Ending is strange.
4/10
The Law and Phillip Bliss! (#4)
Solid story.
Very unusual first third, with the hero taking quite a pounding.
Ends on an intriguing cliffhanger, too.
6/10
Dead Man’s Judgement! (#4)
Mildly interesting, dark tale.
Brutal.
But there’s nobody here to feel any great empathy for.
5/10
Palace of Black Magic! (#5)
Another brutal tale.
It unfolds slowly and the sense of impending doom grows with each new scene.
The personality of the ‘hero’ comes into sharper focus with every story, flaws and all.
It’s certainly an unusual series.
8/10
Child of Darkness (#6)
Dark. Even for this series.
The elaborate backstory sets up a tale that packs quite a punch.
8/10
The Blood-Testament of Brian Collier (#7)
Nothing to get excited about here.
The story is full of boring clichés, and the series main character is only tenuously connected to the action.
Makes me wonder why this was done as a Simon Garth-episode.
4/10
A Death Made Out of Ticky-Tacky! (#8)
Interesting idea for a story, well executed.
Slow to start, but once it gets going it’s very engrossing, like a tale from the Twilight Zone or something similar.
It builds to sickening twist. Way more effective than it has any right to be.
9/10
Simon Garth Lives Again (#9)
Definitely feels like an ending is close.
The death of a major character occurs, and is very sad.
Then we have a very fast resolution to a dangling story thread. Too fast to fully convince, but still enjoyable.
8/10
A Day in the Life of a Dead Man (#9)
Again, the pieces fall into place too easily but it’s still a good comic.
The air of melancholy and regret that underscores everything makes it work. Just.
8/10
The 2nd Death Around (#9)
Good ending to a good series.
Closure, and an emotional power.
Definitely not where I thought this series was going.
