My first exposure to the Ka-Zar character was the excellent & underrated Ka-Zar the Savage series in the early '80's (by Bruce Jones & Brent Anderson); at that point I had never read any of the '70's Ka-Zar. Because of this, I had no pre-conceived notions of the character and was able to enjoy the book on it's own merit. I thought it was an excellent series - the "intelligent" Ka-Zar didn't seem forced, and I though the art was exceptional. The NYC issues were especially enjoyable, and I thought the storyline where Ka-Zar "died" was very dramatic; I also liked the inclusion of the NYC Marvel super-heroes like Spider-Man, etc. Also, some of the later issues had a strong sci-fi element, which made it interesting as well. It's also worth noting that this was one of the Marvel comics that went the direct-market route about halfway through the series, and IMHO this caused the later stories to be somewhat edgier and more innovative. Along with drama, there was humor as well - I remember one of the NYC issues where some of the characters (Ka-Zar & someone else) were fighting, and crashed through the roof of a building where a local comic book convention was being held - the writer and/or artist of "Ka-Zar the Savage" were actually in attendance at the convention & ran away, talking about the "crazy people" in NYC! Very funny. I understand the transition from newstand to direct market only made it tough for some to get the title at that point, but I was lucky enough to live in an area where direct market stores were around, so had not problem getting the book. I really enjoyed the direct market version, since these later issues are slightly more adult in nature, and also many/most of them have the incredible wrap-around covers. Here's a gallery of these amazing covers: comicvine.gamespot.com/ka-zar-the-savage/4050-3087

34 issues might be a little much for 1 trade, unless you're going to make it Omnibus sided. I could see it being in the Epic format (though probably not actually part of the epic line) ala the Machine Man one I just got... that would probably be 2 Volumes (which would actually be slightly smaller than usual). They put some weird stuff in trades, so one never knows!

Yeah, you're right - and, an Omni of this title is extremely unlikely, if not impossible - it's way too obscure.
A series of 2 color Trades would make more sense. Note that since Ka-zar the Savage went direct-market about mid-way through the run, the page count is somewhat higher in these direct-market issues - since there were no ads. And, the great 2-page wrap-around covers would also increase the page count somewhat.

I absolutely loved that series, in my opinion it was one of the best things Marvel put out in the eighties, and definitely the best Ka-Zar series ever. Beautifully drawn, beautifully written, and crammed full of characters that have stayed with me ever since, like Buth and Dherk (who someone should really bring back). I also really liked the story where Ka-Zar got shot in the head!

My first Ka-Zar was the 1997 series by Mark Waid and Andy Kubert. But I did start expanding my Ka-Zar reading with some Astonishing Tales issues, followed up with this series. I remember liking it fairly well, (and looking at my inventory app) I am only missing two issues out of the series. With so much activity on the forum here lately with reviews and posters bringing up series, I am almost overwhelmed as to what to read again first. But I may give this a try again and see if I like it still.

Yes. I still have this run from 1-18 , those are the issues that had the Anderson Artwork. If I remember correctly, this series was the fist time they had him speak like a normal person rather than the Tarzan speech that he used since his inception.

The character had dropped the "me Ka-Zar, you Zabu" speech pattern quite a while before, but even after adopting proper pronouns he still spoke like a fantasy character, like a bigger than life lord of the jungle. In the Jones-Anderson series he started talking like an ordinary guy, and to become entirely more relatable.

I missed the gradual change from his original syntax, so it was quite jarring for me when I picked up KTS#1.

I just checked my MU account and they don't have that series at all. They have some issues from the 1997 series. I guess that kills the hope of them collecting it in a tpb or Omnibus. But on the other hand, it's pretty inexpensive to get at shows or , I imagine, on eBay.

While the 97 series was my first this might have been subconsciously why I enjoyed this series when I only bought a few issues of Astonishing Tales until I was offered what I have of this series in a one lot buy. While my grandmother showed us lots of the Johhny Weismiller (sp?) Tarzan movies growing up the first person speak is grating after awhile. (I can't say why Grundy gets a pass. I just like the guy.)

Actually, this series is scheduled to be collected - at least the first five issues are; this volume should be coming out in January 2017. Here's the Amazon solicitation: www.amazon.com/Ka-Zar-Savage-Dawn-Bruce-Jones/dp/1302905066/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1474120701&sr=1-1&keywords=ka-zarThe problem is the small size of the volume - just 5 issues - WTF?! I haven't seen a Trade this thin in years. I would think at the least they could collect 10 issues. Maybe Marvel is "testing the waters" to see how well the volume will do before reprinting other volumes?! It's also not clear if other volumes are planned, anyway - after all, the title doesn't include "Volume 1". I would have strongly preferred 2 much thicker Trades reprinting all 34 issues. I am on the fence about getting this due to the thin size, but I may still buy it....

I don't know why Marvel is even bothering to come out with a Trade this thin; however, I was a huge fan of the title back in the day & I like to support CE reprints of comics I grew up (that I liked), so I may purchase this....
