I paid $90 for a VF+ copy of Avengers #2 in 1987 as a high school graduation present to myself. I paid $50 for a Conan the Barbarian #1 in VG about 2-3 years ago, buying form a local comic artist who was selling off part of his collection to fund printing costs for his self-published comic. Any other high ticket books I have gotten I have either traded for or used store credit for without paying cash out of pocket. I have a very limited budget, so I rarely spend more than $10-15 on a book, and prefer the under $5 price tag if I can.

very interesting
I knew at one point Shax ponied up some fairly big $$ for a couple of issues.
I'm surprised that there are not more collectors here. I don't mean that in a bad way.
I haven't bought to flip or for an investment, but I'm starting to think I might if I come across the right circumstances.
Still, I'm a reader and lover first.
Had a friend offer me the pick of any of his Ditko Spidey's and I passed. I wanted his sister to get the most $$ she could when selling them and I've got reprints so no big deal really.

For a single issue it would be $20.
The first time I bought one that expensive was Superman #233.

Flipping is fun. And for me its easy because, while I love comics, I really just focus on older stuff from before I was born. I want to read those stories in their original form. That and there are certain books that I can buy and I find easy to part with so maybe I am not as die hard as some here. That being said, I know it will take me a lifetime or more to track down everything I want from 1960-1990 that I want so forgetting about modern stuff is easy for me to do. Plus it feels great to turn 3-4 books into $60-70 and then put that towards an awesome comic that you truly will love.

I paid $100 for Daredevil #2 and $60 for #168. Other than that, I don't remember ever paying outside of the $15-$20 range.

I was spoiled in that most of the books that I prize were being published when I was a young collector. Having said that, about 3 years ago I had some comic books stolen out of my attic. They happened to be Avengers 90-100 and Avengers 57. The bulk of those issues I repurchased for less than 6 dollars but I ended up Paying 50 bucks for 57.

My lovely step son got into the habit of going into my attic with people he considered friends to smoke weed and I'm guessing that they cherry picked specific books. I don't think he did it because he has no knowledge about comics.

Though this isn't my copy, it is fairly representative of the condition mine is in. I bought mine about seven or eight years back for $250. I don't buy comics online, there are no places in Winnipeg that sell Golden Age comics (barely Silver Age come to think of it), and this is one of those covers I marveled at as a kid when I saw it reproduced in Batman: From the 30's to the 70's. Picked it up at one of the Manitoba Comic Cons that have been happening annually since, well perhaps the year I bought this one come to think of it, and it was one of the first comic cons Winnipeg had seen in about 10-12 years so I went a little crazy.
When I was about 13 (1992) I paid $100 for this
Again, not my copy but like the copy here, mine was also 'Published in Canada' meaning that instead of three Batman stories, my copy has two and one, I think, Vigilante tale. A lot of money for a 13 year old kid but at the same time, what else was I going to spend it on? Hey, Dick Sprang artwork and a Bill Finger Joker story which has never been reprinted.
I also paid $50 around that time for
Again, Canadian edition so one of the stories (a Penguin tale disappointingly, has been replaced with something else). Bought at Red River Books on a 50% off day.

Hmmm. .. I know I paid in the $20-$30 range to pick up the issues of the "Metal Men" run I was missing. .but for the most part, I grew up reading/buying DC, so never had to splurge on any key Marvel issues.
(and was already reading Xmen when the "new" X-men were introduced, so got all of those for cover price off the newsstand while I was in Elementary/Jr. High School.
So I think the most I ever paid for a book I just *had* to have?. . . was the KISS Marvel Comic super-special that I couldn't find when it came out, and paid, I think, $40 from a dealer at a comic show (Dallas Fantasy Fair, if i'm remembering correctly)

The most I've ever paid for a comic was $200 for a copy of All-Star Comics #24 (featuring Mr. Terrific's one-and-only appearance with the JSA) about twenty years ago.. It turned out to be missing the centerfold and the dealer, a longtime friend, happily refunded my money. Not sure what my second biggest purchase was but I don't think I ever went over $100 any other time. I remember paying a whopping $85 in the early '80s for Tales to Astonish #35 and a raggedy Amazing Fantasy #15.
Cei-U! Those were the days!
