The best comic shop that I've ever frequented, Neptune Comics in Waukesha, WI, is closing by the end of October due to financial reasons. The closest comic shop is in a fairly inconvenient area of Milwaukee, so I'm considering ordering my new comics online. I've looked at Westfield and Lone Star so far, but I'd love to get some input from my fellow CCF'ers on online subscription services that you've used, good or bad. I'd appreciate anything you can share with me. Thanks.

I've never had a new comic subscription with any company. But by experience with back issues and selling comics I having nothing but good things to say about Lone Star. Maybe someone can vouch their subscription service is just as good as their other services.

I used Westfield about 20 years ago and liked it.
About 10 years ago I used DCBS - Discount Comic Book Service, and liked it very much.
Like adamwarlock2099, I've always heard good things about Lone Star.
Sorry to hear about the shop closing.
It's really hard to find a good shop.

I've always used Things From Another World, the books always come well packaged and they often throw in freebies too.

Neptune is well-lit, professionally run, and doesn't stink at all. They always pull what I ask them to. The owner and his only employee were both intelligent and personable. Women and children have actually gone into it of their own free will. That's rare.

One thing I couldn't find was an idea of the shipping costs. Are they reasonable? The discounts are nice, listed as 20-35% off. If that offset the shipping costs it might be worth trying.

They just use standard USPS rates which are pretty decent.

TFAW is owned by Mike Richardson, publisher of Dark Horse Good shop. The one in L.A. Is worth going to see. Here's a picture of it out in Universal City. Note the Dark Horse Comics sign and the alien ship crashed into the building.

I shop at an LCS, but a while back I did a lot of research into online comic book services because I was contemplating making the switch. DCBS seems to be the all-around favorite. It has the deepest discounts (40% for most titles, sometimes more), $6.95 flat-rate shipping, and most of their customers seem pretty happy with it. The only drawback is that it's a preorder based system, so your order is locked in a couple months in advance. Of the places that offer traditional pull list services and will ship, you might want to check out Impulse Creations. I don't use it myself, but it seems to have a lot of good things going for it. They offer 30% discount, which is one of the higher non-preorder discounts. They also offer the most flexible shipping, including ship-on-request where they will hold all the book until you request a shipment instead of a regular monthly or weekly shipment. Coupled with flat-rate shipping, if you don't mind getting books less frequently you could potentially save a lot on shipping this way. They also bag and board all their books. And since it's a pull service rather than preorder, you have a lot more flexibility to make changes, or add items that have already released. www.impulsecreations.net/catalog/-pm-9.html

Pre-ordering from DCBS or any other service has that disadvantage of items getting dropped or rescheduled.
It can get crazy fast for those trying to keep score.

I buy through DCBS.. I'm not sure how other ones are, but I really like it.
You place your order when Previews is out, and are able to place/edit it until the end of the month. You can set up a pull list, so that one click brings all your pull list stuff into your cart (in addition to showing you any variants). You can also browse by publisher. You get charged with the month ends. They generally have everything at 40% off cover, with some exceptions (some big two stuff will be 50, while some indy stuff with be 30-35). That includes trades/Omnibuses/etc that are released or re-released.
They charge you $6.95 shipping per shipment, regardless of size. I do once a month (to keep that low), but they also off weekly or twice a month. For the monthly shipping, they pull it after the last Wednesday of the month, so it usually goes out Thursday or Friday... I've gotten the box as early as Saturday and as late as Wednesday. In about 5 years of using then, I've only had an issue once (when my box inexplicibly went to San Francisco before coming back), which they gave me a shipping credit for even though it was probably Fedex's fault.
The web site makes it pretty each to see a list of what you've paid for and not received yet, and I've never found any discrepancies. They give you a credit if stuff gets cancelled outright, or if it's much delayed and you ask (I've only done that a couple times though, so I'm not sure if its the exception or the rule)
Packaging has always been quite good, and I've never been shorted anything I've noticed. I'd definitely recommend them, assuming you buy enough comics to have the discount cancel out the shipping fee (which doesn't take too much).

I use Zeus Comics from Dallas, Tx. (and have for going on 10 years at this point) it's run by Richard Neal (who used to post on CBR/YABS as Degada), and consistently wins awards for "best of Dallas" here is their website: www.zeuscomics.com/the way it works (for my stuff at least) is that every Sunday, I get an email from them that contains a link to the "checklist" for what is arriving on Wednesday of that week. you can take a peek at what the checklist looks like from the link at the top of the website - filled with an amazing amount of information on the books, and Richard doesn't make you pre-order anything.. you just select what you'd like (although in the past, I've pre-requested unique items (such as an expensive statue, or a limited version of a hardback, so he knew to order it for me). anyways. . . each Sunday I fill out the checklist, and then submit to him (he emails me confirmation list on Monday). The way *I* am set up, is to ship the last Wednesday of each month. . tho you can ship weekly if you want. for my Monthly ship, he typically picks up shipping cost (usually whenever my tab is over $120, which it almost always is since I only get books shipped Monthly, he pays for shipping. . but not sure how it works). Zeus also offers a discount. . .but again, not sure how much for new subscribers these days (I'm grandfathered in). but if you reach out to them to check, mention you're an old poster from way back on CBR, and that bert recommended you check them out. POSSIBLY can get you some decent discount I know several folks who buy from Zeus!.. . highly recommended.

They worked hard to make it a nice place. For me, it's just an inconvenience. For them it really sucks because they're going to be out of jobs.
