So similar to the desert island Cd scenario, you are going to be stuck on a desert island indefinitely, and can only bring 5 trade paperbacks/hardcovers/graphic novels with you, what are they? For me, I'd pick these 5 from my shelves...... Complete Bone all in one edition... The Spirit Archives Vol. 1 The New Frontier Deluxe Edition... Conan: The Barry Windsor-Smith Archives vol. 1 The Collected Works of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century... that would be the five of stuff I own. The only thing I might take instead if I did own it would be this... which is one of the books high atop my want list currently. I could look at Wrightson's stuff there all day every day and never get tired of it. It would probably replace the Buck Rogers volume, or maybe the Conan, not sure. -M

I think mine would be: 1. Essential Fantastic Four v.3: Inhumans, Galactus, Silver Surfer, Negative Zone, Dr Doom. It really set the standard. 2. Essential Silver Surfer: probably my favourite series ever. 3. New Gods: given that the Fourth World Omnibus is in volumes thatwould mean only getting one part of a story, so I'll go for the best part of the concept, the incredible New Gods 4. Am I allowed Giant-Superhero Holiday Grab-Bag 1974? Daredevil's greatest tale. Sub-Mariner's greatest tale. The first great Fantastic Four tale. A rather enjoyable tale featuring the Human Torch, with Spidey. And a Black Widow story that didn't quite do it for me (although the art is amazing). 5. Legion of Super-Heroes The Great Darkness Saga Deluxe Edition: It's such a great story. Builds so well. Great surprise villain (although not with the collected editions, which has Darkseid all over it)
So, no Alan Moore? I love Marvelman, Watchmen and Swamp Thing. My favourite character Ghost Rider not making an appearance? No Marvels or Kingdom Come? The great Starlin Cap. Marvel not in there?
Then again, I did wrestle with just selecting Essential FF and the Surfer!

A rather enjoyable tale featuring the Human Torch, with Spidey. And a Black Widow story that didn't quite do it for me (although the art is amazing). I'll allow it! I had one of these in the late 1970s. It was really beat-up and had some water damage, but I can't remember if I got it at a used-book store or if I traded with some other kid for it. The last couple of pages were torn out. It's the first place I saw Fantastic Four #25 and #26 (my #2 choice on my favorite comic book stories list) and I loved it the first time I saw it, even though the last few pages of the story were missing. It ends right in the middle of the big fight at the construction site! Also the first place I saw Daredevil #7, which is a great candidate for best Daredevil story. So, yeah, a lot of great stories in that treasury edition.

The trades that I would take would have to be the kind of books that reveal new things with every reading. Right off the bat I think Watchmen and JLA/Avengers.

Most of the comics I'm reading at the moment are Marvels from 1982.

Essential Hulk 3It actually doesn't matter which Essential Hulk I take with me, as I love them all. For years I had read no comics, and then sometime (about ten years ago) I started collecting and reading these. Just these. And I absolutely loved them. Passionately. And that prompted me to buy/try Defenders when I got that far in Hulk continuity and, eventually, led to me buying almost all of the Essential line and joining the Complete Marvel Reading Order website. Essential Man-Thing 1I had never read any Man-Thing until about three years ago. I read these stories, and I was blown away. These I will cheerfully re-read anytime. Powerful, inventive, strange. Clever. Essential X-Men 2One of the greatest story arcs ever. I first read these, one a month, back in the early 80s, in Marvel UK's Rampage Monthly. Happy memories. For such a sad story. Essential Ghost Rider 3It was the mid-80s when I got into GR and collected the issues from 36 up. Loved them. Re-read them. Either Essential #3 or #4 would be great to have with me. Daredevil: A Touch of TyphoidOne of the highlights of the late 80s. Again, a story arc I read and re-read. These five are a good contrast, I feel. Something light and fun (Hulk) as well as something dark and brooding (DD). Something badass cool (GR) and something truly original and different (M-T). And, last, a really good story arc with a definite ending (X-M).

This took me FOREVER to decide upon, but now I'm resolved. I had to eliminate most of my high art favorites in favor of volumes showcasing franchises I've loved for most of my life that I could easily read again and again and never grow tired of. Usagi Yojimbo Special Edition These were not the best Usagi stories, but they show the most range and cover the earliest, most pivotal adventures as well. Three of Usagi's most unforgettable story arcs ("Samurai," "Circles," and "The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy") plus a generous sampling of smaller tales. If I had to narrow Usagi down to one volume I'd never tire of and never want to be without, that's it. Carl Barks' Greatest Ducktales Stories There are probably more complete Barks volumes out there, but this one covers most of my favorites. I could re-read these a million times and never tire of them. New Mutants Classic vol. 3 I'd want a lot more of this run than just this, but volume 3 probably covers my absolute favorites. New Teen Titans: The Judas Contract My favorite storyline for one of my favorite comic book properties. Uncanny X-Men Omnibus vol. 2 Dark Phoenix Saga and early Kitty Pryde, amongst other things. Runner-ups: Corto Maltese: Ballad of the Salt Sea The Contract with God Trilogy Life & Times of Scrooge McDuck Barry Windsor Smith Archives Conan vol. 1 Sandman Omnibus 1 Grendel Omnibus 1 Untold Legends of the Batman paperback

I think I would take books about survival in nature, medical remedies, books with real-life photos, a big fat book of prose that would last a long time The last thing I'd take would be super-hero books. Unless it's to keep the fires burning

Unless it's to keep the fires burning Sorry Gilligan packed your bags before you boarded the USS Minnow. All that stuff got lost, the only thing that survived and reached the island with you were your funny books.... -M PS he also ate all your pudding, so no pudding on the island for you either...
