I remember seeing Warren magazines on news-stands at the various stores where I bought comics, but I never purchased any. They were expensive and I was not, and really still am not, a horror fan. I've since read Blazing Combat, which is incredible, and the odd issue of Creepy and Eerie. But overall Warren is still a pretty big blind spot for me.

I didn't have to buy Warrens, I got to read them for free. Basically, a nearby bookstore had hundreds of them piled on the floor with about 1/3 or so of the top front cover neatly cut out...and as they weren't selling and I was buying other comics, the store owners were nice and I got to borrow what I wanted for free. Eerie and Creepy were my first choices, and I swear the first Vampirella I read had nudity (she was bonking Adam I think). The owner died several years ago and that branch closed, who knows where that stash of unsold magazines went.

I assure you, having recently read the early Vampirella's, there was no real nudity or actual bonking going on. Dammit. At least not through the 1975 issues (up to about #37) . Now, I understand Warren's towards the end got more raunchy so I'll see when I get up to those

Did Warren have any rivals aside from Skywald and (eventually) Curtis/Marvel?

Did Warren have any rivals aside from Skywald and (eventually) Curtis/Marvel? Right after Warren began publishing Creepy and Eerie, there were these cheaply produced horror mags (forgot the publisher's name or the titles of the books) that were filled with only pre-code material. And not particularly good pre-code. Ah, just looked them up. Done by Myron Fass publishing under the title Eerie Publications, one title was named Weird. Carl Burgos was editor and did most of the covers

I'll send you a little teaser from Spawn of the Star Beast via pm That was a nice gift that went well with my morning cup of coffee. Good to see Gonzalez was still doing the art for the most part all the way to the end. Recalling the fan press towards the end of Warren's run, their SF magazine 1984/ 1994 pushed the envelope as far as possible with sex. Artist Peter Hsu was doing work for them at that time. Folks here comment about Greg Land's use of porn mags got models. Land's a piker compared to Hsu

I have very fond memories of this title, but outside of Eisner's Spirit, never collected them. And now I'm too overwhelmed by the vast bulk to do so. I am getting some of the collections of the more compact character arcs, like El Cid and Pantha and Hunter.

Can anyone help me with an inquiry?? I bought & read an occasional Eerie,Creepy & Vampirella mag back when they were originally being published. My question/inquiry is...I read this one story that creeped me out but have no idea what mag it was from, either Creepy or Eerie I think...the story was about a group of people deserted on an island and they had no food & after a time were starving and everyone had to take turns letting a doctor amputate an arm so they could all eat. The doctor promised that when they were rescued he would have his arm amputated, but he didn't amputate his arm as promised (can't recall exactly what happened next). Anyone know what mag & issue number this was from??

Warren Publishing has just lied to me. Right to my face
I'm up to Vol 6 of the Vampirella Archives from Dynamite Pubs, reprinting the 1974/1975 Vampirella issues. Flaxman Loew is finishing up his 2 year run as the writer of the Vampi stories. From time to time in the letter pages, readers have questioned whether Flaxman Loew is a pseudo-name.And always the response is that it's his real name
Now, thanks to the internet, I've learned that it was an alias. The name Flaxman Loew comes from a series of stories written in the 1890s. That the writer's real name was John Michael Butterworth. That he also used that name on other stories in the Warren magazines during that time.
The truth is always out there

A comic book publisher/company lied? You serious? They would never do that to us devoted and loyal fans would they? Never thought it would happen from such honest and reputable (is my sarcasm layered on thick enough?) publishing firms!

Ok, time to seriously get down to business! I really need to find out the specific issue number of a specific story that I read way back in the 70's...please look at my above post...if ANYONE can give me the specific Magazine (Creepy, Eerie?) & issue number I will mail a DC Omnibus free of charge. You have the following to choose from... "Batman Golden Age v1" "Flash v1" "Green Lantern v1, v2" Justice League of America v1" Ok, I have been looking for this particular story for years, but have had NO luck! The story was about a group of people deserted on an island and they had no food & after a time were starving and everyone had to take turns letting a doctor amputate an arm so they could all eat. The doctor promised that when they were rescued he would have his arm amputated, but he didn't amputate his arm as promised (can't recall exactly what happened next) So, like I said, give me the required info & you get a free Omnibus.

Have you looked on the front page of this forum, bottom right, for the link to the Warren Pub Archives, where you'll find just about all the Warren magazines available in digital format for you to browse on your own. You should enjoy reading through them as you search. I probably read that story but couldn't tell you the issue
