For those of you that maybe did not stick with a new series, or just buy random first issues because you like the character, which #1s still managed to impress? I got an Old Man Logan #1 for free when I visited a new arcade in the mall (we have a new 'competitor' so to speak, at least with new issues, and he wants to be friends which is cool) and it was interesting.
I've not looked at anything Green Lantern or Red Lantern and am generally way behind in many new series.

I've actually gone a little bit out of the way to NOT buy #1s lately... doing my microscopic part to reverse the trends in the industry I don't like. I buy them for books I know I'm going to buy no matter what (like Star Wars, Iron Man, Titans, etc) but anything to try I'm starting with #2 these days with Marvel.
Over on the DC side, it was so confusing with the rebirth issues and #1s, I'm not even sure what you consider the first issue.

I tend to by #1 issues of creator owned stuff I am interested in to see if I like it. Sometimes I keep up with it, other times I decide to trade wait on the rest. As for big 2 #1s, I am just not interested enough in contemporary big 2 super-heroes t buy them, I'll read DC from the library and Marvel through unlimited, and if I really like something, pick up the trades down the road for myself, but I have neither the time nor money/interest to buy big 2 #1s.
Stuff I have picked up #1 issues of and added to my pull or decided to get the trades recently include...
Black Hammer Seven to Eternity Kill or Be Killed Future Quest Micronauts Conan the Slayer
