I'd say we need at least a couple dozen participants to make it work.

I'd say we need at least a couple dozen participants to make it work. What would be the criteria? Rules? Please give an example so I get the idea of what it would look like.

Modern covers, say up to 10 years old (where the classic covers time period ends). The rest of the rules will be virtually the same as that contest. Any valid cover will be eligible, including variants and unique sketch covers which are one of a kind.

If not, why not?

It's valid, that's what those covers are intended for!

Would it have the same participation times ? Yep! Would be nice to see some more responses to make it work (5 or so entries isn't enough)

Oh I think there would be participation.

My interest would be limited. I've found comic covers for the past 2 decades on the whole much less interesting and distinctive than those of previous era. I participate in the cover contest at out old home that puts no limit on the era of the cover, and I find I tend to gloss over the modern covers but have my interest piqued by the more classic covers. I also find modern covers much less versatile towards different types of themes/topics than older one. That said, I'm all for having the contest if there are people who will enjoy it and participate in it. The more the merrier. And if it runs and I find a cover/topic that interests me, I will join in, but I can't guarantee that will happen. But I think you might be better served having a different start and end day than the classic contest so people have things to look forward to on different days. It might help encourage interest and participation.

The most interesting modern covers are the ones people sketch on themselves...
Modern covers just don't 'do it' for me, yet I go weak at the knees looking at some of those old four colour covers, as basic as they are!
