I've always been intrigued by the one off public service comic books put out by Marvel and DC. I never got one originally, but I've picked up a few in 50 cent boxes.
I've got:
Daredevil VS. Vapora which is some kind of gasoline safety comic.
Spider-Man, Storm and Power Man --Battle Smokescreen which is an anti smoking comic.
Mickey Mouse and Goofy explore Energy Conservation. Must be from the 70s.
American Honda Presents DC Comic's Supergirl, in Cooperation with the U.S. Dept. of Transportation's National Safety Belt Campaign.
And I have a Casper the Friendly Ghost comic for Major League Baseball. Has something to do with the S.F. Giants baseball team.
Anyone ever get a public service comic, other than buying it as a back issue?

I must have had 5 or 10 copies of that Storm, Powerman Spider-Man book growing up, I don't know if the police station just had a stock pile or if there was just a big push in the late 80's early 90's but it seemed like they gave them out at every town event. That said my favorite PSA comics were the Smokey the Bear comics my father had, they were just fantastic.

I think we had a Smokey the Bear comic, between my brother and I. I had a couple of educational ones; the TRS Whiz Kids and another science one.

I had a couple of Smokey of the Bear Comic Books and I do recall getting a free comic when I visited Yellowstone National Park as a kid back in the mid sixties and I wished I still had that book. I also see a Spider Man one that my dear friend Jeff had also seen a Comic book bearing the Dynamic Duo - Batman and Robin as well and vaguely remember that.
That's my own exposure to these things ...

The New Teen Titans drug awareness issue is one I bought, as well as the second issue that came out later. The first issue was drawn by George Perez, can't remember who drew the second issue. I vaguely remember that Tops Big Boy restaurant had free comics, but not sure if they were public service related. I also remember having some Smokey the Bear comics, seems like I got them from school as a child. There was also some Sunday School related comics, but I think they were all about religious figures, no superheroes.

There was also some Sunday School related comics, but I think they were all about religious figures, no superheroes. The Big Boy comics were definitely not PSAs; mainly short adventures, puzzles and games. There were a few religious comics; Treasure Chest of Fun and Facts was distributed to Catholic schools, going back to the 40s. In the late 60s or 70s there were the Christian Spire comics, which were distributed by Archie, and included some religious Archie comics. I had a neighbor who went to a christian school who had a few of those, though he preferred the superheroes. My church used to get the Sunday Pix bulletins, with the biblical stories and original tales, like Tullus. They were some good comics; but, I still grew up to be an atheist. That same neighbor got a stack of Treasure Chest comics at a garage sale and ended up passing them on to me. They were pretty good, with biographical and historical stories, as well as new adventures. They had a sci-fi/adventure hero, Sock Jones, who was in the Tom Swift and Jonny Quest mode, with an airship lab. I got a digital collection of some of those; but, there is only one or two Sock Jones stories in the comics collected in it (they produced those things for years). The collection did include the infamous anti-communist propaganda issues.

They were generally well done, and we spotted people like Graham Ingels, Reed Crandall, Joe Sinnott and (IIRC) Dick Giordano doing some of the art.

Despite the title of this thread, any kind of giveaway comic can be discussed. They don't have to be public service related. Any and all comments are welcome.

Ok then...a year or 2 ago I bought the box set of the "Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes" Animated series and it came with a free mini-comic of Wolverine #1 by Chris Claremont/Frank Miller. I guess this counts as a giveaway even though I had to pay for the box set? Ha, debatable. Was it Pizza Hut or Domino's that had those free X-Men comics when you bought a Pizza? Was either in the late 90's or maybe around the time the first film came out? I never actually got one, so cannot comment further.

Here's a link to a large collection of Public service/giveaway comics - actually, three collections. If I did this right, this link will include the "government comics", "educational comics" and "political comics" collections. link

The only time I lived outside NYC was for 9 months back in 1966. That's where i discovered Big Boy restaurants and their giveaway weekly comic book. Guess I loved anything that was in a comic book format back then. I continually pestered my parents to dine their every week. Which was exactly what Big Boy was banking on. Big Boy had a big bright idea

I had a Spider-Man/Power Pack comic about sexual abuse. And I think I had that Teen Titans drug issue.
