I didn't realize Netflix still mailed discs. I like the service because they have a lot more obscure and older stuff available on DVD over streaming. Although unfortunately you sometimes have to deal with movies/shows being on their list but unavailable for whatever reason.

As some of you know, 2020 has not exactly been the easiest year for me, beyond just the coronavirus issues. My mom's deteriorating mental health condition, coupled with her and my dad separating after 51 years of marriage, has put a lot of unwanted and unneeded stress on me and my sister, not to mention my wife and daughters. Well, the universe decided that the shit sundae that I've been served this year wasn't quite full enough, so it threw a couple more scoops of poop on it yesterday. My father was out filling his bird feeders last night when he tripped and fell on his driveway, fracturing his right hip. I spent last evening with him at the hospital, and he was in surgery this afternoon. He'll wind up at a rehab facility for at least 6, but more likely 8 or more, weeks, and then we'll have to figure out a long-term solution for him if he can't return home. Sad thing for him is, he wasn't drunk. Used to be, we could chalk this up to him being hammered, but he hasn't been drinking since my mom left. After the paramedics took him away, they told me to wait about 45 minutes before heading down to the hospital since they would have to get him there and get him checked in, and there would be nothing for me to do. With the time, I did a little snooping and found not a drop of booze in the house. No bottles behind the bar, no beer in the fridge, no empties in the recycling; nothing. Just an accident where a 73-year old man tripped over his own two feet and wound up smashing his hip. 2020 can go find Negan, grab Lucille, and do unspeakable and very painful things to itself with that bat. I'm done with this year. It can go fluff itself.
Sorry for the late response here Captain. I'm not on here as frequently as I was due to an extremely hectic schedule.
I'm very sorry to hear this about your dad, but most especially for you and the rest of your family having to deal with the repercussions.
Consider this : He wasn't sauced or even had any, which I would think would be a relief. Last year when my dad passed it was due to a heart attack, yes, but he had been drinking. That was very disappointing to us all.
My heart goes out to you my friend and know that we're here for you. I'm glad that you share with us too. It's funnybooks, but it's good people like you that make this place special.

I didn't realize Netflix still mailed discs. I was with Lovefilm years ago. Waiting for discs to arrive was frustrating, but there were also concerns about “throttling”. This is the Wikipedia definition of “throttling”:

Dropped my youngest son off at college Saturday. Well...moved his stuff into his apartment. He was in the dorm last year but has two room-mates this year. He starts his first job next Friday night. He got his CNA in high school and got hired on at a retirement home. He's getting hazard pay and a night shift differential so he's making $19.50/hour which is pretty damn good for a first job.
I'll admit that I'm worried about him in the pandemic, but he's going to live his life.

Retirement Centers are NOT allowing visitors, temperature checking staff as they come in each shift and any patients being admitted in or back from a hospital require 2 negative COVID tests before acceptance. At the least that's how it works here in Phoenix at the moment.

Plus he’s YOUR son Slam so I’d bet he probably has a pretty good head on his shoulders.

Thanks. One just worries. Particularly with a number of universities already having outbreaks a week into the semester.

I was wondering about that, because growing up in the 1990's, and going to Blockbuster, they had a huge library obviously. And when Netflix took over and essentially is where it's at now with a scaled back version of what one could find, I guess people just adapted and choose what was available. At video stores you could find obscure stuff, and the mega hits like Star Wars that Netflix can't always carry due to contracting. No one ever seemed to complain though, and just took Netflix for what it was. I guess that's the power of never having to move off the couch.

Well, I found out last night that a guy I used to work with back in my big box retail days is in the ICU on a ventilator with COVID-19. He is one of the nicest human beings on the planet and is a beloved fixture of the local music scene in that town. Even though I haven't seen or spoken to him in years, that one hit pretty close to home.
Stay safe out there. Take it seriously. Please wear your masks and maintain proper social distance. It's not a hoax or a cold, and it does not discriminate. Please feel free to direct any prayers and good vibes that way.

I was actually rather surprised at how many kung-fu films Netflix had in their catalog. But yeah, the fact that everyone and their brother now has a streaming service has kind of hampered Netflix's list of titles. They do still have quality original content though.

Life update for those following my work or lack thereof since terminating from the hospital over a month ago. Spent 1 week as a mental/emotional vacation resting up over the tiring demands since Covid struck. Then the last 5 weeks have been placing in all sorts of applications online. Sadly not any real responses (didn't expect immediate calls) other than a few to interview for a part time or seasonal position. Tons of job opportunities out there but seems many of the businesses are hesitant or unwilling to offering full time spots. Guess it's easier to keep hiring temporary or part time until finding someone they like?
Yesterday I received an email from a Staffing Service which primarily deals with filling State/Federal job openings. They had pulled my Resume from online when I applied to a few listings. After speaking with the recruiter today (48 minutes) with further details I liked what I was hearing and how they operate. Most positions are 4 to 6 months in duration 32-40 hours with possibly fill to Permanente with state.
The hospital utilized a similar company and the company pushes applicants through for interview at the department level of our various hospitals. Many times we would hire on to permanent positions as we found RN's that fit and wanted stability. Others like having temporary spots and moving around in different departments in the hospital. The recruiter I talked with says her company does the same for State jobs and they too have those who like temp help & some who go to permanent with State.
So long story short she liked my interview and Resume and wants to bring me aboard to her Staffing Company. She is sending my Resume out for 3 postings, all equivalent in duties to my role as an Administrative Assistant. Sad part is like any Government job, it all passes through the slow moving Chain of Command so it may take up to 10-17 days awaiting Interviews with State due to Covid slowing things even more.
So, hoping for the best and the horizon holds promise of coming opportunities. If nothing else, the recruiter also discussed working with her department's team of recruiters as a possibility. But she was strongly positive I would be hearing back from her next week with interview's to be scheduled.
So I shall await seeing what the winds of fortune blow my way. Thanks and I truly appreciate all your well wishes and prayers my friends! Let you know more as I know more....
