Speaking of musical instruments... This came up on my Facebook memories today. This was my youngest son two years ago in his percussion pit. The high school band plays music as a pit orchestra for the yearly school musical. He was the percussion section all but his Freshman year. This was his Senior year and they did Fiddler on the Roof. That's awesome. It's funny, I did pretty much the same thing in high school and college. I played drums, percussion and mallet instruments throughout in concert, marching and jazz ensembles from the 7th grade on up.
I never even touched a guitar until I was out of college and on my own. Percussion is the only family of instruments where I had extended formal training. Sometimes I miss sitting behind a kit an swinging in a jazz group-- but my drum chops are rusty rusty rusty!
I hope that your son continues to play into adulthood-- too many people give it up when life starts to get in the way. Pit orchestra work for a percussionist is not easy. At all.

He wanted a set of bongos for Christmas when he was five or six. So I got him a good set. Then we bought him a drum kit from my best friend who has had a series of bands over our lifetime (he's a guitarist, but had a kit that had been his sisters) when he was probably nine or ten and he started on lessons. He was the only sixth grader that they ever let play drums in the junior high band. He loves auxiliary percussion. He says all the percussion wannabe's just want to wail on the drum kit instead of learning the whole family. His biggest problem is he's always underestimated how good he is so he never followed through the way he should have. My favorite was when he'd have a conga part in jazz band.

If there are enough people interested I could waste a lot of time in a musical instruments thread. I'm just a bedroom* shredder with very occasional recordings of a very amateur level. My wife says I am better than I think I am, but she has to be nice to me. I'd say I'm all right on my good days.
I've wanted a drum set for over 20 years but have never had the space or the money. Usually neither.
*more accurately living room shredder these days.
Slam, That is super cool about your son. I hope he sticks with it.

But one keeps hope alive.

I have never played anything except the stereo. I have been thinking about breaking out my middle son's lap steel guitar and seeing if I can figure out how to do something with it.

Stay way from the tambourine or maracas. They are deceptively harder than you might think.

Not a guitar but I played Trombone and Baritone horn back in the day. This one happens to be a Marching Band Baritone Horn.

Don't forget, those of us who live in an area that adopts Daylight Savings Time, we spring ahead and hour tonight. Those who don't live in such areas, be grateful, but things like deadlines for the weekly Cover Contest will be affected. Happy Happy Joy Joy!

I hate the time change. It's anachronistic. I wish the powers that be would just pick one and leave it. Preferably this one we now have as I enjoy it not getting dark at 5pm half the year.
