Feeling particularly stupid tonight. I just spent a whole 30 seconds trying to remember who user X. M. W. was. If you're only experiencing a 30 second delay before your brain kicks in, consider yourself lucky My brain entropy is sliding more towards 30 minute delays. -M

Just got back from the post office. I had forgotten another rate increase went into effect today. A small priority box went from $8.45 to $9.20, and flat rate envelopes and other flat rate boxes went up at a similar rate. Not sure if first class or media mail rates were part of the increase though, but for those who buy or sell comics or other things online, you'll likely see shipping charges go up soon as a result. -M Add that to the sales tax that is being added, so if someone buys a book for $500, expect an additional $50 or so sales tax.....ouch. Glad I got all my SIKTC before this became rampant.

Call it the more things change, the more they stay the same. As of now I begin another unpaid vacation. 1 day after 1 full year with State and at end of my shift, my Director calls me to his office. Thanks me for my work and says my services no longer necessary and asks for my badge.
I didn't let it go at that. Pushed back asking for specifics. Finally told me it was NOT my work or skills or any faults of my own. That over the last with company restructuring that in some departments (mine specifically) the work has slowed down substantially and it the choice was made to let ALL Outside Contractors go and reassign from within. That it "hurt" him having to let go one of his "best workers" go but that he had no control over doing so.
I call bullshit, as just this afternoon I was praised for my work during last months Audit reviews and my excellence in training the last 4 new hires all in the last 40 days (all 4 actually transfers from other departments) while maintaining my own workload. I saw the handwriting on the wall with invisible ink over the last month and thought this may happen.
When I asked about the possibilty of re-applying to another department with State he was quiet and wouldn't say anything. So stubborn old mule I politely and hpushed some more and his response was as of last week, NO OUTSIDE CONTRACTORS FOR 6 MONTHS AT LEAST AS STATE REASSIGNS STAFF.
So it's a bit of rest and relaxation as I work with my Vendor Contract Services for seeing what they may have available. So HAPPY FREAKING HOLIDAYS to me. Here I go again? Feels like I was just doing this. Oh, wait. I did do it last August/September. So let's see how if it takes less than lat years 9 weeks job hunting or if it takes longer.

ugh. .sorry to hear that.
Office politics are bullshit. They absolutely could have found a way to hire you in if they really wanted to.
hope you find something quick. . or at least enjoy the downtime if you can afford to take it.

Sorry to hear that brutalis Hopefully your search goes quicker this time. There are supposedly labor shortages everywhere, yet it just seems employers don't actually want to pay people to work and would rather go short staffed if they can't get workers at the rates they want to pay. But what do I know. -M

Appreciate all the well wishes. The CCF is a true haven of great people from the "real world" of late. Yep. Arizona, the right to work, not work State. As others have noted, lots of companies here will hire on the cheapest and youngest, hoping to get 3 staffs work from one person. And yet they will complain at the same time over the lack of qualified/quality workers. At least I had a year, learned some new skills, kept ahead of the bill collector and avoided the dreadd Covid.
Watched my expenses this last year, have kept 6 months ahead on the car payments. I always run on a tight budget, especially over the last year and a half. As my "boss" never showed any inclination to hire me on as permanent, I listened to the ongoing "gossip" picking up details and knew my time with them was limited based upon all the "changes" happening in other State departments. Had hoped to at least continue until after the end of the year, but I am prepared financial wise for several months.
Will work out the actual finances over the weekend so I can budget accordingly. Won't be going out to eat or seeing the new fall movies unless work turns up. Have to talk with the Vendor Contractor company I am signed with to discuss my options as for searching through them for further job availabilities. Also update my resume with this last year working for the State and see what arises.
Last year it took 9 weeks from August to 1st week of October and was hired with my 1st interview. So I'm not really expecting such luck this time around. Hoping for the best and a fast hiring or placement since I am already signed on with the Contracting company and had a year with State. Will let you all know what occurs as it happens.

Ugh, sorry to hear, brutalis. What a pain in the butt, but glad to hear you have some financial buffer to tide you over. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if what your boss said was true. I know someone in a specialized field where most of the work is government subcontracting, and it's all contracts because of the uncertainty of budgets. He got tired of having to look for a new job every year or two and eventually changed fields, but that part rings true (unfortunately). All this to say, it's not you, it's them, because clearly you are too cool for their school.

Well, brutalis, that just stinks. Having worked in state government for over 20 years (my particular position is classified as civil service, so that provides some stability), I've seen it happen here in Tennessee as well. Contract positions frequently come and go, and are often absorbed into the state employee pool. That can be a good or bad thing-- in your case, it's a bad thing. Best of luck in your search, I'll keep you in my prayers. Keep us updated here.
